21、Many years ago, my mother read from the book Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey to me. I remember as if it were yesterday, hearing her voice at my side on a cold wintry night. My mother’s voice changed my world.
Long before I could read on my own, she shared with me the strength and beauty of McCloskey’s language a story of a little girl and her mother out in nature, co-existing with a mother bear and her own baby. The power of the story, of language and of my mother all came together. And it happened many times after that, over and over. The read aloud made me a reader.
Years later, I was reading aloud a picture book to a small child in a classroom. His life, so far, had not been easy. His childhood was troubled by poverty and loneliness. In that moment, in the joy of the read aloud, he had an idea that started something big.
What he said was this: “Mrs. Allyn, let’s make sure everyone knows how good this feels. Let’s have a holiday for the read aloud” Therefore, my organization, LitWorld, created a grassroots movement World Read Aloud Day in 2010 to honor this young boy’s wish for everyone to be able to have a read aloud every day.
Since the day he shared that good idea with us, World Read Aloud Day has become a worldwide event reaching over one million people in more than 65 countries around the world. This year we are over 600 cities strong, a number that is growing every day.
Children who grow up as readers become engaged citizens of the global world, and every child deserves the right to read. When I say that reading aloud will change the world, I know it sounds simple. But one of the many great things about giving kids access to the power of stories and sharing them together is that it is simple. It is also cheap and easily done. And the impact is huge.

22、 Werewolves (狼人) aren't the only creatures affected by the moon's cycles. A full moon subtly disrupts (打乱) people's sleep, reports a Swiss team of scientists. Even people dozing (打盹儿) in a lab without windows experienced a small shortfall in sleep once a month.
To test the moon's effect, 33 adult volunteers of both sexes and various ages spent several nights in a sleep lab. As they dozed , researchers monitored their brain activity , eye movements and hormone (荷尔蒙) levels. On nights closer to a full moon, the subjects took an average of five minutes longer to fall asleep, and slept for 20 minutes less. In addition, brain activity decreased by 30 percent during the sleep stage that the brain normally uses to recover from its daylight work. And levels of melatonin, the hormone that helps control sleep cycles , dropped. On these nights , the sleepers complained (抱怨) of poor sleep quality even though they were unaware of the lunar cycle. On the bright side , not a single participant turned into a werewolf.
These new data suggest the moon's cycles can subtly affect sleep cycles. These internal (内部的) cycles may be similar to the roughly 24-hour rhythms driven by the body's internal “clock”. One big difference :The body's clock is set by sunlight.
The Swiss team doesn't know how the moon affects sleep. The gravitational (引力的) attraction of the moon causes ocean tides (潮) to rise and fall. But that force is too weak to affect sleep, Cajochen says. He suspects (怀疑) some internal body clock may be tied to the moon cycles. Lunar cycles have been noted in sea animals that keep track of the tides. There may be another explanation , says David Dinges. This sleep researcher at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia says that the body clock is very sensitive to light at night. Volunteers' sleep could have been changed by exposure to extra moonlight before arriving at the lab.
【1】The writer mentioned “ werewolves” in the first paragraph to ________ .

B.draw people's attention to the finding of the research
C.give an example of the existence of the moon's cycle

A.Their brains never recovered from the daylight work.
B.Their brains were not so active as they normally were.
C.They slept for about five minutes longer than usual.
D.They complained that they were too tired to sleep.
【3】The last paragraph is mainly developed by ________ .

23、By the year 2050, a fifth of the world’s cities will experience unprecedented climate conditions and environments that currently don’t exist in any major cities, according to new research. A team of scientists at the Crowther Lab in Switzerland produced the report, which described the climate for 520 major cities 30 years in the future.
The results showed that 77 percent of the world’s cities will experience a surprising change in climate conditions by 2050, and 22 percent of the 520 cities will see conditions that are not currently experienced by any existing major cities.
In China in 2050, the climate of Xi’an, in Shanxi province, will be similar to that of current day Maseru, the capital city of Lesotho in southern Africa, with the maximum temperature of the warmest month likely to increase by 4.59℃. Chongqing in southwest China will resemble the climate of Swaziland capital Mbabane, as the warmest temperature is predicted to rise by 5.1℃.
Scientists predict summers in Europe will get warmer by an average of 3.5℃ and European winters will see temperature rises of 4.7℃. London’s climate will be more similar lo Barcelona, and Madrid’s to Marrakech.
The Crowther Lab hopes the analysis will motivate decision-makers to take necessary steps to prevent or address some of the climate effects due to the threat of climate change. The report also found that cities in tropical regions will experience smaller changes in average temperature but will be controlled by shifts in rainfall regimes. This may lead to a noticeable increase in unexpected events, and severe droughts.
“Across all scientific fields, the greatest challenge in climate science is no longer the precise measurement of climate change impacts, but inspiring people to picture is actual effects in order to motivate action,” said Tom Crowther, senior scientist und founder of the Crowther Lab.
