二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When you feel like everyone around you is having more fun and spending more time with friends, you might feel bad about yourself—even if it is not true. A study published by Whillans and her colleagues found that 48 percent of college freshmen believed that their friends had made more friends than they had since school began. In the study, more than 1,000 first-year students reported they had 3.63 close friends on average, but they believed their friends had 4.15 close friends.

According to Ashley Whillans, this fear of missing out on parties or events is actually very common. It may be particularly severe among college freshmen because entering into university is one of the key transition points in their life in establishing their identity in a new social environment. In other words, it’s their first taste of navigating social situations as an adult.

“Since social activities, like eating or studying with others, tend to happen in cafes and libraries where they are easily seen, students might overestimate (高估) how much their peers are socializing because they don’t see them eating and studying alone,” says Frances Chen, the study’s senior author and an assistant professor in the UBC psychology department.

Another study they published at the same time indicates that feeling left out made the students pretty unhappy. “This was surprising,” Whillans says, “because many high-achieving people—i.e. the ones most likely going to college—believe they’re better equipped than their peers to handle challenges. But when peers appear to be doing better socially, that can contribute to feelings that there’s something wrong with us.”

This study also suggests that for some people, feeling slightly behind on the friend curve (曲线) was motivating because the students’ view of how they were doing socially compared to peers changed several months later. It indicates that if people think making friends is something they can change and something they can get better at, they will work toward that goal.

Greg Walton, a psychologist at Stanford University, says that many first-year students could benefit from things like having older students share stories of how they felt left out socially as freshmen, or encouraging teachers to express criticism about students’ work in a more positive way.

【1】What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?

A.It’s normal that you think others have more friends.

B.It’s obvious that you should believe in your friends.

C.It’s vital that you need more friends to enrich your life.

D.It’s possible that you have more friends as a freshman.

【2】According to Whillans, why do people feel sad when they are left out?

A.They have high expectations of themselves.

B.They lack enough courage to face challenges.

C.They have a strong desire to make achievements.

D.They lose good chances to show off their abilities.

【3】Which of the following can best describe the fifth paragraph?

    A.Every dog has its day.

    B.Every coin has two sides.

    C.Actions speak louder than words.

D.All good things will come to an end.

【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?

    A.To draw a logical conclusion.

    B.To give a detailed explanation.

    C.To provide a possible solution.

D.To show the outcome of the study.

  • 22、   Fired bricks are a universal building material, produced by thousand-year-old technology, which throughout history has seldom served any other purpose. But researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have found a new use for bricks:as energy storage units. A team of engineers and chemists have found a way to transform an ordinary house brick into a battery (电池) — allowing it to conduct (传导) and store electricity.

The researchers connect an LED light bulb (灯泡) to the bricks. They are powerful enough to illuminate it and cost only about $3 to make.

“I love the idea of adding value to things that are inexpensive, things that are affordable, things that we see every day,” said Julio D'Arcy, an assistant professor of chemistry at Washington University and one of the researchers on this project.

The new invention relies on something known as iron oxide, a form of matter in bricks that gives them their red colour. The scientists pumped the bricks with several gases that react with iron oxide to produce a network of plastic fibres. These fibres coat the empty spaces inside the bricks — and conduct electricity.

“What we’re trying to do is:we're trying to make specialized plastics and then we can actually put those plastics inside construction materials,”D’Arcy says. “In the future, a brick wall could potentially serve two purposes at one time:providing structural support and storing electricity produced from renewable energy sources, such as solar panels.”

The technology is still at least a few years away from being ready for the market. And right now the energy that the bricks can store is still not much. Hut the team is now testing ways to improve brick performance — because it looks like you can find a new purpose for an old brick.

1What did the researchers turn bricks into?

    A.Lighting equipment. B.Construction materials.

C.An electricity-storage item. D.A new form of green energy.

2What does the underlined word “illuminate” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Store. B.Light. C.Conduct. D.Transform.

3What conducts electricity in the bricks?

    A.Iron oxide. B.The stored gases.

C.The produced fibres. D.The empty spaces.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Old Bricks, New Tricks B.A Bright Future Is on the Way

C.A New Way to Produce Electricity D.Recycled Batteries,Renewable Energy

  • 23、In 2019, the world generated 54.6 million tons of e-waste. However, just 17.4 percent of it was formally collected and recycled. Since 2014, the amount of c-waste recycled has grown by 1.8 million tons — a relatively small amount, considering that the amount of e-waste generated increased by 9.2million tons in the same period.

Global reserves of some elements, such as platinum (铂), are supposed to be fully used up within15 years if the proportion of recycled stocks entering production doesn’t increase. E-waste and EV batteries are currently recycled through processes called pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy. However, they involve burning temperatures with a high energy demand and deep carbon footprint, and poisonous chemicals which are harmful to the environment. Alternatives are therefore being sought.

A team of scientists from the University of Coventry are extending one such alternative. They have been using non-poisonous bacteria to oxidize (使氧化) and recover the precious metals — a process known as “bioleaching”. They have shown that copper is widely recoverable from e-waste, and that all metals present in EV batteries can be recovered by using microbes (微生物). If extended, bioleaching facilities would mean that manufacturers of EV batteries and other electronic goods would be able to recover metals locally, relying less on costly exports to recycling centers abroad.

“At present, a key limitation for e-waste recycling is the lack of certification detailing the typesand amounts of metals contained in electronic goods. But with an efficient recycling process appearing, manufacturers have the motivation to use more recycled material in their products, which will change the very design of electronics goods. It’s about closing the loop of a product’s life cycle,” said the leader of the Bioleaching Research Group, Sebastien Farnaud.

Ultimately, bioleaching technology is born out of the idea of creating a truly circular process for the things that we consume. We need to shift from a mindset and economy where we see waste as an end product, to one where there isn’t even a start or an end at all.

【1】What do the statistics in paragraph 1 indicate?

A.The recycling rate of e-waste is comparatively low.

B.People pay little attention to e-waste recycling.

C.E-waste has caused serious environmental problems.

D.The amount of e-waste is sharply increasing every year.

【2】What is the disadvantage of current ways of recycling e-waste?

A.They only apply to certain e-waste.

B.They generate metals with a complex process.

    C.They are not environmentally friendly.

D.They cause a sharp rise in local temperatures.

【3】What do we know about the bioleaching technology?

    A.It recovers metals by microbes.

    B.It produces non-poisonous bacteria.

    C.It has been applied abroad.

D.It promotes the local export trade.

【4】Where is the text most probably from?

    A.A news report.

    B.A scientific journal.

    C.A health magazine.

    D.A fiction novel.

    From: Wendy and Jack Brown

    Date: September 22, 2014

To: 8th and 9th graders at R.L.S. Junior School

    Subject: Bonjour!

Bonjour! (That means hello in French.)

We hope you all had a great summer. Ours was a lot of fun. We have seen so many new things and met so many wonderful people. The French gave us a warm welcome and helped us get used to living here soon. We have so many things to share with all of you. We are going to send you more emails, but here are the best parts of our holiday in France so far.

We had a fantastic time seeing the Tour de France this summer. It is the most famous bicycle race in the world. The riders travel more than two thousand miles in about a month! We got a quick look at the riders as they sped past! After the race, our family rented bikes, and rode along part of the route that the cyclists used.

A few of you asked whether the French really eat snails(蜗牛). The answer is yes. We went out to dinner the other day, and our parents ordered some. We each tried one and it didn’t taste too bad. The snails, called escargots, are served with lots of butter. They feel a little rubbery when you bite into them, but they don’t really have much taste. Mum’s favourite food here is the French pastries. Dad loves the red wine. Our favourite is the fresh bread from the shop down the street.

We went to visit the Eiffel Tower a few weeks ago. We went all the way to the top. It was a sunny day, so we could see for miles and miles into the distance. Dad doesn’t like heights, so he stayed at the bottom of the tower and took pictures from the ground.

We miss all of you a lot. Write back to us and let us know what is new at home.

Au revoir! (Can you guess what that means in French?)
