二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Why do people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work?

Let’s begin with the question of why people volunteer. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate. To select volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract.

People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can shift people’s wish of participation from an internal factor to an external factor. When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must.

Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them-to remain in their positions over time? To answer this question, researchers have conducted follow-up studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice. The researchers note that attention should be given to “training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience”.

Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work. Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering in hospital is an important part of who I am.” Consistent with the researchers’ expectations, they found a positive correlation (正相关) between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results, once again, result in concrete advice: “Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity... Items like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity.”

1People volunteer mainly out of ________.

    A.school requirements B.social expectations

    C.financial rewards D.internal needs

2What does the author want to tell us in the third paragraph?

A.People who participate in volunteer programs in schools are sensitive.

B.External factors are more important than internal factors in volunteer work.

C.Being required to be volunteers may make people reluctant to do volunteer work.

D.Volunteer programs in school can encourage people to do more volunteer work in future.

3What can we learn from the Florida study?

A.Follow-up studies should last-for one year.

    B.Volunteers should get mentally prepared.

C.Strategy training is a must in research.

D.Volunteers are provided with concrete advice.

4What is most likely to motivate volunteers to continue their work?

    A.Individual differences in role identity.

    B.Practical advice from researchers.

    C.Role identity as a volunteer.

    D.Publicly identifiable volunteer T-shirts.

  • 22、Many people think of sharks as dangerous monsters. But human beings cause a far greater danger to them than they do to us. Although shark attacks do occur, they are quite rare. According to one estimate, however, humans kill 100 million sharks every year. 【1】

Why should we save the sharks?

Sharks take up the top position on the food chain in the ocean. As sharks die off, the population of the animals that sharks consume will increase. This, in turn, means that the number of the creatures those animals eat will drop. 【2】 Fish that eat algae (藻类) are also included. This can cause algae to spread so much that it damages coral reefs.

【3】 The ocean not only produces more oxygen than all the rainforests on Earth combined, but also removes half of the man-made greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Once sharks die off, the global ecosystem will be upset, affecting all creatures including human beings.

    Don’t use shark products

First, vitamin energy drinks and leather goods can be made from shark parts. 【4】 In addition, shark meat is sold around the world, sometimes under misleading names such as rock salmon or whitefish. Shark fin soup is a popular dish. However, the process of getting fins is cruel. Fishermen cut the shark’s fins off and then throw the shark back into the water, still alive. 【5】 Sharks breathe by swimming, so a shark that can’t swim will die.

A.It is time for children to learn about sharks.

B.Shark oil is also used in many popular beauty products.

C.Then the shark dies slowly, sometimes over several days.

D.Actually, the killing of sharks will affect the whole planet.

E.People in some countries are especially keen on shark products.

F.Among them are some sea fish that humans consume every day.

G.This number is a warning that many kinds of sharks may die out.

  • 23、   Self-driving vehicles (车辆) will rely on cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize and respond to road and traffic conditions, but sensing is the most effective for objects and movement near the vehicle. Not everything important in a car's surroundings will be caught by the vehicle's camera. Another vehicle approaching at high speed on a collision (碰撞) track might not be visible until it's too late. This is why vehicle-to-vehicle communication is undergoing rapid development. Our research shows that cars will need to be able to chat and cooperate on the road, although the technical challenges are huge.

Applications of vehicle-to-vehicle communication range from vehicles driving together in a row, to safety messages about nearby emergency vehicles. Vehicles could alert each other to avoid collisions or share notice about passers-by and bicycles.

From as far as several hundred metres away, vehicles could exchange messages with one another or receive information from the Roadside Unit (RSU) about nearby incidents or dangerous road conditions through 4G network. A high level of AI seems to be required for such vehicles, not only to self-drive from A to B, but also to react intelligently to messages received. Vehicles will need to plan, reason, strategize(制定策略) and adapt according to the information received in real time and to carry out cooperative behaviour. For example, a group of self-driving vehicles might avoid a route together because of potential risks, or a vehicle could decide to drop someone off earlier due to messages received, like a foreseen crowd ahead.

Further applications of vehicle-to-vehicle communication are still being researched, including how to perform cooperative behaviour.

【1】What is the first paragraph mainly about?

A.The reasons for the accidents by self-driving vehicles.

B.The research about applications of self-driving vehicles.

C.The importance of artificial intelligence of selfdriving vehicles.

D.The reasons for developing communication between self-driving vehicles.

【2】What does the underlined word "alert" in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Alarm.

    B.Judge.

    C.Ignore.

    D.Control.

【3】What can we learn about the Roadside Unit (RSU) ?

A.It can improve bad road conditions.

B.It recognizes the vehicles on the road.

C.It takes control of the passing vehicles.

D.It serves as an efficient information station.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

    A.Importance of high-level AI.

    B.Vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

    C.Different kinds of vehicle communication.

D.Ways to improve our communication with vehicles.

  • 24、The Moon is attracting much attention these days as NASA is ready for its Artemis I launch and preparing for more to follow. The mission objectives are clear: develop a sustainable presence on its surface and pave the way to go to Mars.

And then what? What’s the next great leap in humans’ quest for the secrets of the universe? When it comes to the near future scientific exploration, there are a few areas of the solar system that will be receiving some special attention.

First off there’s Venus, a planet which was a relative paradise (天堂), with oceans and a pleasant atmosphere. Something went terribly wrong there a few billion years ago, and NASA has scheduled a series of missions to explore what exactly is going on there.

At the other end are the gas giants. Several of the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn are covered in thick sheets of ice, and underneath that ice sit oceans of liquid water. NASA has missions planned to investigate those mysterious worlds, hunting for any signs of possible life hidden deep within.

As for us humans, Mars is certainly the grand prize in the coming decades. If we have the adequate drive and funds, we can establish a semi-permanent presence on the red planet, keeping crews working and studying in person on the Martian surface. The other planets of our solar system are not so suitable for people to settle on. Mercury is too close to the Sun for comfort and too far away from the Earth.

Over the coming decades humans expect to see a rise of “space hotels”, set up for visiting tourists and scientific explorations. Naturally, turning the space rock into a habitat for humans is not very practical considering our current level of technological maturity, but in my best estimation, it’s the next easiest thing to accomplish, after the Moon and Mars, of course.

【1】What does the underlined word “quest” probably mean in the second paragraph?

    A.Question.

    B.Explanation.

    C.Request.

    D.Search.

【2】Which is the least likely to be explored in the next decades according to the passage?

    A.Mars.

    B.Mercury.

    C.Venus.

    D.Gas giants.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards the “space hotels”?

    A.Ambiguous.

    B.Critical.

    C.Hopeful.

    D.Indifferent.

    【4】What’s the passage mainly about?

    A.The launch of Artemis I.

B.The secrets of the solar system.

    C.The missions of NASA.

D.The areas of the future universe exploration.
