二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Sometimes when we eat, what we’re hungry for isn’t food — it’s the taste of memory. Studies show that foods we think of as comfort foods don’t contain any magical properties. What might be comforting is the feeling of proximity (亲近) to other people associated with the foods.

Thoughts about comfort foods are often linked to calories, warmth or a sense of well-being, but what we don’t think about is that they also provide something social to us. People like comfort foods because of their ability to make them feel that they belong.

When Marcel Proust, author of Remembrance of Things Past, bit into a cake at his aunt’s house, he was overwhelmed by a feeling of nostalgia. Where had this “all-powerful joy ” come from? He sensed that it was connected to the taste of tea and cake, but it “ went far beyond” those flavors, he wrote. In Proust’s case, the taste he experienced took him back to childhood experiences with a beloved aunt, to whom he formed a strong bond.

Comfort foods are often thought of as being rich in calories or full of sugar. Nevertheless, other studies have also shown that the line between comfort and food isn’t as clear as “ junk food = happiness. ” Eating so-called junk food does activate the brain’s reward system, but that high is short-lived. It’s not the deep reward of real comfort. On the other hand, if you feel bad, you might as well have a salad, as long as there is something in the food to bring back pleasant memories and create a sense of belonging. Taste and smell, Proust wrote, “ stay fresh a long time. ”

    【1】How do comfort foods function?

A.They inspire a sense of belonging.

B.They are linked to all-powerful joy.

C.They provide the calories one needs.

D.They set off the brain’s reward system.

【2】Why does the author mention Marcel Proust in Para. 3?

A.To express love for a special cake.

B.To share a good childhood memory.

C.To. show the nature of comfort foods.

D.To prove a popular belief about foods.

【3】What does Para. 4 mainly talk about?

A.The less clear line between comfort and food.

B.The connection between junk food and happiness.

C.The difference between comfort foods and junk food.

D.The relationship between comfort foods and reward system.

【4】Where does the passage probably come from?

    A.A science report.

    B.An advertisement.

    C.A cooking guide.

    D.A health magazine.

  • 22、Keeping Safe in your House During a Fire

Though you may not think you’ll ever fall victim to a house fire, it’s better to be prepared to avoid panicking. To increase your chances of survival, just follow these steps.

1.React as soon as you hear your smoke alarm goes off. On hearing your smoke detector or alarm going off and seeing a fire, exit your home as safely as possible.   【1】

3.Protect yourself from smoke inhalation(吸入). Get low to the floor and crouch or crawl on your hands and knees to avoid the smoke. 【2】 Cover your nose and mouth if you have to walk by or through a heavily smoke-filled room.

4.【3】 If your clothes catch fire, immediately stop what you’re doing, drop flat to the ground, and roll around until you put the fire out.

5.Prevent the smoke if you can’t get out. 【4】 Close your door and cover all vents(通风口)and cracks(缝隙)around it with cloth or tape to keep the smoke out.

6.Call for help from a second story window. 【5】 You can take a sheet or something else—white preferably—and hang it out of the window to signify that you need help when the first res-ponders get there.

  • 23、   I have had just about enough of being treated like a second-class citizen, simply because I happened to be that put-upon member of society ― a customer. The more I go into shops and hotels, banks and post offices, railway stations, airports and the like, the more I’m convinced that things are being run just to suit the firm, the system, or the union. There seems to be a new motto for the so-called “service” organization ― Staff Before Service. How often, for example, have you queued for what seems like hours at the Post Office or the supermarket because there aren’t enough staff on duty at all the service counters? Surely in these days of high unemployment it must be possible to increase counter staff. Yet supermarkets, hinting darkly at higher prices, claim that bringing all their cash registers into operation at any time would increase expenses. And the Post Office says we cannot expect all their service counters to be occupied “at times when demand is low”.

It’s the same with hotels. Because waiters and kitchen staff must finish when it suits them, dining rooms close earlier or menu choice is lowered. As for us guests (and how the meaning of that word has been cut away little by little.), we just have to put up with it. There’s also the nonsense of so many friendly hotel night porters having been gradually withdrawn from service in the interests of “efficiency” (i.e. profits) and replaced by coin-eating machines which supply everything from beer to medicine, not to mention the creeping(慢慢加剧的) threat of the tea-making set in your room: a kettle with teabags, milk bags and sugar. Who wants to wake up to a raw teabag? I don’t, especially when I am paying for “service”.

Our only hope is to repeat our anger whenever and wherever we can and, if all else fails, restore that other, older saying ― Take Our Custom(买卖) Elsewhere.

1The author feels that nowadays customers are _____.

    A.not provided with proper service

B.considered to be lower members of society

    C.not worthy of special treatment

    D.regarded as privileged

2In the author’s opinion, the quality of service is changing because _____.

A.more consideration is given to the staff than customers

    B.customers are becoming more demanding

C.customers are unwilling to be satisfied with

D.the staff are less considerate than employers

3According to the author, long queues at counters are caused by _____.

    A.deliberate(故意的)understaffing

    B.lack of cooperation among staff

C.the reducing supply of good staff

    D.inefficient staff

4The  disappearance  of  old-style  hotel  porters  can  be  attributed  to  the  fact  that _____.

A.the personal touch is less appreciated nowadays

B.few people are willing to do this type of work

C.machines are more reliable than human beings

    D.self-service provides a cheaper alternative

A.to put up with whatever service is provided

B.to fully use all kinds of coin-eating machines

C.to make strong complaints wherever necessary

D.to go where good service is available

  • 24、Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.

Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. She studied in her mother’s school, and finished her high school education at the College of Sevigne in Paris.

  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some students with the same school uniform fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, " Some people are fighting! Let's go and have a look! But Henry refused, "I don't think so. It's dangerous. We'd better tell our teachers, who have rich experience to solve this kind of things. Besides, our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me."

“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry sighed, deciding to inform his teachers what happened. So now, the boys had different opinions about the definition of “bravery” . But what kind of things can be considered to be brave?

After that, Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him.

Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Ronny for his rude behaviour , because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.
