二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Lately, I’ve been traveling around the world. No longer am I waking up far away from my home, tired from a late night of writing down the stories I collected the day before. Things are different now, and each day my travels begin like this: I sit down at my dining table, usually early in the morning or late at night when nobody else is awake, and I listen to the radio.

The radio station is always from somewhere that isn’t here in New York, and most often it comes from a free-to-use website called Radio Garden. Move your mouse and maybe you will land in Bujumbura, Burundi; in Dibrugarh, India; or on the edge of the South Pacific. Seemingly no matter how large or small the broadcaster is, if it sends out a signal online, it can appear on the site and you can listen to it.

During the pandemic, Radio Garden, which is now available as an app, at times attracted as many as 15 million monthly listeners. “We received many heartwarming emails from people stuck at home expressing their gratitude for the service,” said Jonathan Puckey, the site’s founder.

Radio Garden began as a project of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, where designers and computer programmers overlaid (覆盖) station streams with their geographical locations on a 3-D map of the world. As a result, there is more than one way to transmit. Visiting a country like Colombia brought back memories of past trips - - romantic accordion music reminding me of bus rides on the rural roads.

Where will you visit first on the Radio Garden globe? For me, thrilling as it is to drop in on Ouagadougou or Ulaanbaatar or the Azores, it’s all about personal history: I was born and raised in New York, but my family is from everywhere—Latin America, the Middle East, and places in between. My ancestors were merchants who traded in goods and cultures. Now, because of their wanderings, pieces of six languages still fly across our dinner tables. Thanks to Radio Garden, my family can cross planes of space and time without worry!

【1】What does the first paragraph focus on?

    A.The joys of radio travel.

B.A scene of traveling by radio.

    C.A popular way of traveling.

    D.The difference in this travel.

【2】What do we know about Radio Garden?

    A.It is affordable.

    B.It is widely accepted.

    C.It is easy to maintain.

D.It is based in New York.

【3】What does the author think is the greatest advantage of Radio Garden?

    A.Simplifying travel schedules.

    B.Making tourism popular again.

    C.Improving the traveling experience.

    D.Promoting the virtual reality travel.

【4】What does the last paragraph imply?

    A.Radio Garden is expanding quickly.

    B.Radio Garden increases global connections.

C.Radio Garden benefits from global awareness.

D.Radio Garden facilitates the development of tourism.

  • 22、I have dreamt of taking a trip to Hawaii since I graduated, but the best thing always needs waiting. I took a trip with my friends to Haleakala National Park which lies in Hawaii.

When we arrived at Haleakala National Park, we were advised to watch the early morning sunrise. I was lost in the sightseeing that afternoon so I could hardly wait to meet the sunrise. In the next morning we all jumped out of the bed very early at 3 o'clock and walked to the rocks by the seaside. In the first half an hour we imagined how wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when the light touched our skin so we waited and waited. However, another half an hour later I gradually lost my patience since there was nothing but the chilly darkness and I felt that I was frozen to death. But my friends were still extremely cheerful.

Nearly another one hour later "Amazing!" a word burst out from Judy and we all shouted to welcome the light orange greatness which is really unbelievable. Until today I dare say that it is the most impressive sunrise in my life. However, waiting in the morning darkness is also the one I can not wipe out forever.

Waiting sometimes is really a hard thing for most of us as it needs patience and strong-willed determination, but what about the result after that? It might turn out to be pleasingly unbelievable and satisfied. So it is really worthwhile to wait for the best.

【1】When did they see the first light of the sunrise?

    A.Nearly 6 o'clock.

    B.Nearly 5 o'clock.

    C.About 4 o'clock.

    D.About 3 o'clock.

【2】What's the meaning of the underlined word "chilly" in paragraph two?

    A.Terrible.

    B.Interesting.

    C.Total.

    D.Cold.

【3】What's the author's attitude towards waiting for the sunrise?

    A.Afraid all the time.

    B.Excited all the time.

    C.Firstly excited then impatient.

    D.Firstly excited then afraid.

【4】What does the author want to tell us by this passage?

A.His friends and he took a trip to Hawaii.

B.He enjoyed the most flaming sunrise in his life.

C.Sometimes it is worthwhile to wait for the best.

D.Hawaii is a good place to enjoy the sunrise.

  • 23、These are instructions for making invisible ink using baking soda.

    Difficulty:

    Easy

    Time required

    A few minutes

    What you need

Baking soda  Paper   Water Light bulb Paintbrush

    Measuring cup   Purple grape juice

    Here’s how:

There are at least two methods of using baking soda as invisible ink.

Mix equal amounts of water and baking soda.

Use a paintbrush to write a message onto white paper, using the baking soda solution (溶液) as “ink”.

    Allow the ink to dry.

One way to read the message is to hold the paper up to a heat source, such as a light bulb. The baking soda will cause the writing in the paper to turn brown.

The second way to read the message is to paint over the paper with purple grape juice. The message will appear in a different color.

    Tips:

If you are using the heating method, avoid igniting (点燃) the paper.

Baking soda and grape juice react with each other in an acid-base (酸碱) reaction, producing a color change in the paper.

Grape juice concentrate (浓缩物) results in a more visible color change than regular grape juice.

1______ is not needed for making invisible ink.

    A. Baking soda   B. Paper

    C. Water   D. Ink

2What’s the function of the paintbrush?

    A. To draw a picture.   B. To write a message onto the white paper.

    C. To allow the “ink” to appear.   D. To help the“ink” dry.

3Why will the message appear in a different color in the second way to read the message?

    A. Because there is enough grape juice.

    B. Because baking soda reacts with grape juice.

    C. Because of the use of water.

    D. Because of the special paper.

4From the process, we can know that making invisible ink is ______.

    A. very hard   B. not difficult

    C. a little difficult   D. not easy

  • 24、China’s Scariest Outdoor Attractions

As the world’s most populous nation with the world’s second-biggest economy, China is finding new and increasingly adventurous ways to attract and entertain tourists.

    Fuxi Mountain, Henan

Guinness World Records receives 2,000 applications from China a year -- more than any other country. And the latest potential record-breaker is the 3,000-ton glass-and-steel skywalk at Fuxi Mountain in Henan province, central China. Visitors who dare walk on this U-shaped bridge can look straight through the glass to the valley floor about 360 meters below. The new bridge extends 30 meters beyond the cliff edge, trumping other U-shaped wonders such as Arizona’s Grand Canyon Skywalk over the epic US gorge.

    Shilinxia, Beijing

32.8 meters over the edge of a 396-meter valley, the Shilinxia Viewing Platform stretches a whole 11 meters farther than Grand Canyon Skywalk. It’s constructed with titanium alloy, the material used in airplanes and space shuttles, so it can apparently hold a maximum load of 150 tons and 2,000 people. It’s a hefty 1.5-hour hike from the valley floor to the platform. Or taking the cable car up is an option.

    East Taihang, Hebei

The glass walkway at the East Taihang Scenic Area in northern Hebei Province gained popularity last year when video emerged showing a terrified tour guide falling to his hands and knees as the glass apparently started cracking under his weight. Shattered glass fragments were placed underneath solid panels to make the walkway look and sound as though it’s cracking when trodden upon. While the unique walkway of Taihang Mountain is therefore safe to traverse, tourists were quick to point out that at 1,180 meters above sea level, it could still induce thrill.

1To arrive at the platform in Shilinxia, you can .

    A.walk B.take cars

    C.take cable cars D.both A and C

2Which of the following attractions is likely to break the world record?

    A.Grand Canyon Skywalk

    B.Walkway at East Taihang

    C.U-shaped bridge at Fuxi Mountain

    D.Viewing platform at Shilinxia

3What do we know about the tourist attractions mentioned in the passage?

A.Travelers won’t feel frightened since the glass walkway at Taihang isn’t cracking.

B.Both attractions at Fuxi Mountain and Shilinxia extend farther than Grand Canyon skywalk.

C.The viewing platform at Shilinxia can hold more than 2000 people.

D.The material used in airplanes is applied to the glass walkway at East Taihang.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband , Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children as we would go there when he made everything settled.

During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He almost got lost in those unfamiliar blocks. When he came back in the late afternoon, he discovered that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport. For a while, he was overwhelmed with depression with no one to turn to.

He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in a strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.

Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the footpath.

My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend. My husband was so excited about the return of the suitcase. Meanwhile, the kindness of this family made him feel that this place could be a new start, a new home for a brand new life.
