21、 A teenager from the UK almost died because of an addiction to unhealthy exercise.
Lisa Fouweather, 19, was so addicted to working out that she ran half marathons before breakfast. She started to practice running, hoping to become excellent at her running club, but quickly became addicted.
She was hardly eating to keep in shape. The teen’s meals would only include a few pieces of food from her “safe foods” list which was mainly fruit and vegetables. She would avoid anything containing sugar or fat. “I would throw my orange juice and bread out of the window when my parents left the room,” she said. At one point, her weight dropped to just 75 pounds — around 34 kg.
This helped to improve her running in the short-term when, in fact, her whole life was falling apart. It affected her education as she would turn up late to school every day to finish her morning running. She said, “Six-mile runs became half marathons, all on an empty stomach before breakfast. Upon my return, I would eat only fruit.”
However, although warned by her parents, Lisa refused to admit she had a problem and wouldn’t give up her way of working out until one day she had a heart attack after her running and was rushed to hospital, where she was diagnosed with anorexic (厌食症) and banned from exercise. “I was told that I could have died because my heart was under great pressure.” She was given dieting advice by doctors to help treat her eating disorders. Thanks to hard work and professional help, she managed to put a stop to her extreme exercise and dieting and has been in recovery for nearly three years.
Lisa said, “I want people who are going through the same problem as I did to know that there is help and support out there, and don’t wait until you’re at breaking point to seek that help.”

22、Liverpool city council want to clear the city of fat pigeons. They say that people are feeding the birds, which makes them fat. The pigeons get bigger because their normal diet would consist of seeds and insects, not high-fat junk food they are eating in the city centre.
The council want people to know that everyone who feeds the pigeons is responsible for the streets being so crowded with these birds. They hope to encourage the birds to move away from the city centre and into parks and open spaces.
Ten robotic birds have been brought into the city centre to scare the pigeons away and visitors are asked not to give the pigeons any food. The mechanical birds - known as “robops” - will sit on the roofs of buildings. They can be moved around to different locations. They look like a peregrine falcon, which is a bird that kills pigeons. They even make noises and flap their wings to scare the pigeons. They hope that the pigeons will go away before the city becomes the European Capital of Culture in two years.

23、Marco Polo
Marco Polo was born in Italy in 1254. A traveller and businessman, he was one of the first Europeans to travel across Asia and into China. His journey lasted 24 years.
He set out, aged 17, with his father Nicolo and his uncle Maffeo on their great journey to China. They sailed south from Venice, Italy and stopped off in the Middle East. They often carried on overland to Persia (now Iran), through the Pamir Mountains and the Gobi Desert before they got to Beijing, China. At that time, China was more advanced than Europe. They already had paper, so large numbers of books were available. They also used paper money in many parts of the country.
After he got back to Italy, Marco Polo talked about his experiences in China, and he wrote a book describing the riches of Asia. His book was the first western record of porcelain(瓷器), coal, gunpowder, printing and silk.Unfortunately, not many people believed Polo’s stories and he became known as “the man of a million lies”. He died in 1324.

This gave them time to really look around under the ocean. In 1948, Cousteau began travelling the world’s oceans in his research ship Calypso.Cousteau produced many films and books about his underwater experiences, including the TV series The Underwater World of Jacques Cousteau, which introduced the public to the world of sharks, whales, dolphins and treasure.
Cousteau started the Cousteau Society to protect ocean life. In 1989, he received a great honour: he was made a member of the French Academy. Finally, after a long and varied life, Cousteau died on 25th June, 1997.

24、A new keyboard tool makes it easier for blind Internet users or those who have low vision to quickly access options on popular websites.
Browsing(浏览)through offerings on Airbnb, for instance, means clicking on rows of photos. This is easy for common people but can be hard or impossible for the blind or those with poor eyesight. A new way of using the keyboard to access tables and maps lets blind and poor-sighted users visit sites more successfully than screen readers alone. The new keyboard tool, Spatial Recognition Interaction Techniques, or SPRITEs, maps different parts of the keyboard to areas on the screen.
In an experiment, 10 people, eight of whom were blind and two with poor eyesight, were asked to complete a series of tasks using their favorite screen reader technology, and then using that technology plus SPRITEs. After 15 minutes, three times as many participants were able to complete web-browsing tasks within the given time limit using SPRITEs, even though all were experienced with screen readers.
Users press keys to make the screen reader move to certain parts of the website. For instance, number keys, along the top of the keyboard, map to menu buttons. Double-clicking on a number opens that menu item’s submenu, and then the top row of letters lets the user select each item in the submenu. Most participants couldn't complete a task such as finding an item in a submenu or find certain information in a table using their favorite screen reader, but could complete it using SPRITEs. For text-based tasks such as finding a given section header, counting headings in a page, or finding a specific word, participants were able to complete them successfully using either tool.
Now the developers plan to make the system better for any website and then add it to some free online screen readers.
【1】Why did the researchers carry out the experiment?
A.To show the advantage of SPRITEs.
B.To improve the use of screen readers.
C.To test web-browsing tasks in given time.
D.To prove SPRITEs’ advancement over the screen readers.
【2】How can users open a submenu using SPRITEs?
A.By clicking the mouse.
B.By touching the screen.
C.By tapping twice on a number.
D.By pressing keys at the bottom.
【3】What can be learned about SPRITEs?
A.It contributes to typing fast.
B.It can recognize words much faster.
C.It helps explore new ways to surf the Internet.
D.It assists the blind and poor-sighted to find information more easily.
【4】What can be the best title for the text?
A.The age of keyboard is gone
B.The blind and poor-sighted's needs are met
C.Screen will be combined with a new keyboard
D.New keyboard technology is helping the blind and poor-sighted
