二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   At night, when you go to bed, many birds and animals are getting ready to sleep too. But others are just waking up and beginning their day, because they are nocturnal: they sleep during the day and then come out at night. Have you ever heard an owl hooting in the night? Owls are nocturnal. They spend the night looking for rabbits, mice and other small animals to eat. Bats, pangolins, moths, spiders, and many kinds of frogs come out at night to look for food too. And even in the oceans, some fish sleep at night while others, like sharks, become active.

So why do these animals live so differently? For some of them, it is safer, because there are fewer predators that want to catch and eat them. For others, it is easier to find food because the animals that they eat come out at night too. Some animals are nocturnal because the temperature is better for them at night. Slugs and snails, for example, can easily dry out in the daytime sun, so they hide in dark wet places and wait for the night. Many desert animals are also nocturnal to avoid the heat of the day.

Many nocturnal animals have special senses to help them to move around, stay safe and find food at night. Some have very big eyes that let in a lot of light, so that they can see in the dark. Some, like the fox, can smell things very well or, like owls, have an amazing sense of hearing. And some use echolocation to help them move around and find food in the dark. They make special noises that echo back, telling them what is nearby What other animals do you know about that are nocturnal? Try and find out about one.

Why does it come out at night, and what special senses does it have for night-living?

1Why do owls come out at night?

A.To stay safe. B.To hunt for food.

    C.To find a playmate. D.To build a shelter.

2What's the main idea of Paragraph 2?

A.Why some animals are active at night. B.When different animals come out.

C.Where food is easy to find at night. D.How desert animals get away from heat

3Where can slugs and snails live in the daytime?

A.On the dry rocks. B.In the water.

C.On the rooftop. D.In the wet grass.

4What is the purpose of the text?

A.To voice opinions. B.To offer advice.

C.To show some facts. D.To spread love and joy.

  • 22、The other day I heard a few local musicians talking:

“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.”

“I’m never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”

But, one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”

I’ve heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.

Attitudes are important. Whether they’re positive or negative, they’re rubbing off on you . If you’re around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame others, and you play the role of victim, chances are you will start to as well. So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.

This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.

Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.

  • 24、   No, Tom’s life went along well enough, especially in summer. He only begged just enough to save himself, for the laws against begging were stringent, and the punishment heavy; so he put in a good deal of his time listening to Andrew’s charming old tales and legends about giants and fairies, dwarfs and fairies, castles, and attractive kings and princes. His head grew to be full of these wonderful things, and many a night as he lay in the dark on his unpleasant straw, tired, hungry, he unleashed (释放) his imagination and soon forgot his aches and pains in delicious picturings to himself of the charming life of a prince in a royal palace. One desire came in time to haunt (萦绕) him day and night: it was to see a real prince, with his own eyes. He spoke of it once to some of his friends; but they laughed at him so he was glad to keep his dream to himself after that.

He often read the old books. His dreamings and readings worked certain changes in him, by-and-by. His dream-people were so fine that he grew to express his sorrow at his shabby clothing and his dirt. He went on playing in the mud just the same and enjoying it, too; but, instead of splashing around in the Thames solely for the fun of it, he began to find an added value in it because of the washings and cleansings it afforded.

By-and-by Tom’s reading and dreaming about princely life brought about such a strong effect upon him that he began to ACT the prince, unconsciously. His speech and manners became curiously ceremonious and extremely polite, to the vast admiration and amusement of his close friends.

Tom’s influence among these young people began to grow now, day by day; and in time he came to be looked up to, by them, with a sort of respect and fear, as a superior being. He seemed to know so much! And he could do and say such marvelous things! And he was so deep and wise! Tom’s remarks, and Tom’s performances, were reported by the boys to their elders; and these, also, presently began to discuss Tom, and to regard him as a most gifted and extraordinary creature. Full-grown people brought their problems to Tom for solution, and were often astonished at the wit and wisdom of his decisions. In fact he was become a hero to all who knew him except his own family — these, only, saw nothing in him.

C.felt sorry for his dirty life
