21、 There's lads of research that shows that spending time in nature is good for your health and well-being. But not everyone lives near a park. And not everyone can easily get outdoors. So, what happens when you bring nature into your home via TV? A new study finds that a virtual nature experience can have some of the same effects.
The researchers wanted to see if the same positive impacts of being out in nature would translate to experiencing nature virtually, study co-author Alex Smalley, PhD student and researcher on the Virtual Nature project in the U. K, tells Treehugger. “We were particularly interested in relieving boredom because it's a negative state commonly experienced by older people in care homes,” he says.
For the study, researchers brought 96 adults into a lab and caused boredom by having them watch a four-minute video of a man discussing his work at an office supply company. In a monotone(单一的) voice, the man described a conversation with a client, eating lunch at his desk, and how they determine the prices of products. Then, the study participants experienced scenes of an underwater coral reef scene from the BBC's “Blue Planet 11” series. They either watched it on TV, watched with a virtual reality headset using 360-degree video, or watched with a virtual reality headset using computer- generated interactive pictures.
Researchers found that all three methods minimized negative feelings like sadness and significantly lowered boredom. “I think we were most surprised that just watching nature on TV led to positive changes a Cross each of our measures, suggesting that even short, five minute bursts of watching natural history programming can have an effect on well-being.” Smalley says.
Originally; the impetus behind the study was to research benefits for people who were stuck indoors, such as those in nursing homes or people recovering from illness. But there are entirely new positive results in today's world due to COVID-19, “We never imagined a pandemic would mean the results might apply to such a wide part of the global population,” Smalley says. “We'd always recommend trying to get out into nature wherever possible but for those who can't, our findings suggest that digital experiences of nature could provide a short-term fix.”

22、Many of us like to eat out and treat ourselves to delicious food. We are used to choosing hearty (丰盛的), fat-filled dishes and sugary desserts, which are not easily cooked at home.
The recent rise of light meals, however, gives us a smarter choice. According to Economic Daily, low-calorie, low-fat and high-fibre meals have become popular in China’s restaurants and online delivery platforms.
The country saw a rapid increase of restaurants concentrating on light meals, from just 600 in 2017 to more than 3,500 in 2018. According to a report published by Meituan, a major online food delivery platform, the number of light meals ordered online also rose 75 percent from the previous year.
Having a light meal, however, doesn’t mean eating only vegetables. Different from the meat-free lifestyle, a typical light dish avoids oily, salty and spicy food. Instead, it contains things like boiled meat, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Healthy nutrients(营养物)are the theme of the light meal.
These dishes are useful for keeping healthy and controlling your weight. That’s probably why so many people, especially the youths are into them. They see it as “a great way to avoid getting fat,” wrote the Telegraph.
“After eating several light meals, I now prefer light flavours,” Zou Jing, a college teacher in Wuhan, told China Daily. She shared a picture of her lunch: a mixture of beef, eggs, corn, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes.
These changes in eating behaviour are connected to deeper changes in how people think about food, says Walter Willett, chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard T.Chan School of Public Health, US. “Diet quality, not quantity, is important for both weight control and long-term well-being,” Willett told The New York Times.
So the next time you have a party with friends, try a light meal. It will satisfy not only your stomachs but maybe also your hearts.

23、 When Omar Yaghi was growing up in Jordan, his neighborhood received water for only about 5 hours once every 2 weeks. If Yaghi wasn’t up at dawn to turn on the taps to store water, his family, their cow, and their garden had to go without. At a meeting last week, Yaghi, now a chemist at the University of California, reported that he and his colleagues have created a solar-powered device that could provide water for millions in water-stressed regions. At its heart is a porous crystalline (多孔晶体) material, known as a metal-organic framework (MOF), which acts like a sponge: It sucks water vapor out of air, and then releases it as liquid water.
Yaghi and his colleagues first developed a zirconium( 锆 )-based MOF in 2014 that could harvest and release water. But at $160 per kilogram, zirconium is too expensive for massive use. So, last year, his team came up with an alternative called MOF-303, based on aluminum, which costs just $3 per kilogram, but the harvest was only about 0.2 liters per kilogram of MOF per day.
In July 2019, Yaghi reported that his team has designed a new and far more productive water harvester. Supported by a solar panel to power a fan and heater, which speed the cycles, the new device produces up to 1.3 liters of water per kilogram of MOF per day from desert air. Yaghi expects further improvements to increase that number to 8 to 10 liters per day. And his company plans to release a microwave-size device able to provide up to 8 liters per day this fall. The company promises an enlarged version next year that will produce 22,500 liters per day, enough to supply a small village.
However, it needs to be shown that Yaghi’s MOFs can be produced cheaply on a large scale. Each potential commercial MOF needs to prove itself in stability, efficiency, and life span. But if MOFs can pass those tests, they could offer a solution to some of the world’s most pressing problems.
【1】Why is Omar Yaghi’s childhood mentioned at the beginning?
A.To show how serious water problem is. B.To lead in the topic.
C.To introduce the chemist. D.To arouse reader’s interest.
【2】What is the problem of MOF-303?
A.It costs too much. B.It can’t last long.
C.It is hard to operate. D.It is low in efficiency.
【3】According to Yaghi, how much water will a large water harvester produce per day?
A.1.3 liters. B.10 liters.
C.22,500 liters. D.8 liters.
【4】What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A.Yaghi’s MOFs are in great demand now.
B.Yaghi’s MOFs may help solve water shortage.
C.Yaghi’s MOFs have already entered the market.
D.Mass production of Yaghi’s MOFs is impossible.
24、Malaysian scientists have found a new use for waste from processing pineapples(菠萝): using it to make small pilotless aircraft drones(无人机). Scientists developed a way to use pineapple leaves to make frames(框架)for the drones.
Pineapples are harvested once a year in Malaysia. The leaves have been thrown away because there is little use for them before. Professor Mohamed Thariq is the director of the project. He has been trying to find uses for pineapple waste. The waste is mainly created by local farmers. "We are changing the leaf of the pineapple into the material that can be used for a drone," he told reporters.
Mohamed Thariq explained that natural materials can be better than man-made ones. They are less expensive, lighter and stronger than other materials. If the drone is broken, the frame can fully break down in soil within two weeks. So it won't pollute the environment. The research team hopes to create a larger drone that includes cameras. It can meet agricultural need and also take pictures.
William Robert is a member from a non-governmental group, helping to design the drone and advise on the project. He said: "Our role here is to help the farmers increase their income and make their jobs much easier".
【1】According to Mohamed Thariq, the pineapple drones are ________.
