Millions of young Chinese now exchange messages with her daily, The New York Times reported. On WeChat, Xiaoice is an official account. • 22、Katherine Johnson whose life was described in the movie Hidden Figures died on February 24, 2020, aged 101. The 2016 movie describes a real story of some female African-American mathematicians who joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and led a mission to put the first man on the moon in the 1950s when racial discrimination was widespread.

“NASA is deeply saddened by the loss of a leader from our pioneering days,” said NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine on the webpage of NASA.“Ms. Johnson helped our nation enlarge the frontiers (边界) of space and she also played an important role in opening doors for women and people of color to explore space. At NASA we will never forget her courage and leadership and the achievements we could not have reached without her.”

Johnson was born in West Virginia in 1918. She graduated from West Virginia State University with a major in mathematics and became a teacher at a public school. She was also the first African-American woman to attend graduate school in mathematics at West Virginia University until she left school to focus on raising children.

Her life changed in 1952 after a long career break. A relative told her about open positions at the all-black West Area Computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’s Langley laboratory, and she began to work at Langley the next year. NASA depended on humans for complicated aerospace (航空) calculation as there was no high-functioning electronic computer. Female mathematicians usually took the job as their salary was lower. Johnson was one of those African-American human computers.

Johnson was initially in charge of aerospace analysis and assigned to a space development mission when NASA was launched in 1958. Then she worked for the 1961 suborbital (亚轨道的) flight of astronaut Alan Shepard and the 1962 orbital flight of John Glenn. Johnson continued to participate in missions after she retired in 1986. • 23、I think the majority of people would agree that it’s unhealthy to live in the past. After all, we’re all familiar with the new age philosophy, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift.【1】. Living in the past holds us back from being able to enjoy the present moment. But are there any benefits of revisiting a previous time? Actually, yes. The past has several advantages:

Learning from our mistakes: We all know that poor choices can be some of life’s greatest teachers.【2】.

【3】: By revisiting an unfavorable event from our past, we can often view it from a different perspective as time has passed. Being older and wiser, we are now able to reevaluate the experience and gain deeper insights and understandings of what happened and why, and how it has impacted us since. What once scarred us can now be healed through a newly-found awareness and no longer be a negative force in our lives.

Motivated by earlier successes:【4】. Other times life has been difficult. Remembering the past when we were at our best can help motivate us out of our current slump(低谷) and put us back on track for success. Use your past successes to propel(推动) you on to newer and greater things.

While it’s evident that revisiting the past has several advantages, there is a warning. Just like an amusement park, it’s fine to visit but you cannot stay there forever. At some point, the park closes and all visitors are asked to leave. Enjoy the past when necessary but don’t always stay there. Use it for living in the present and planning for the future.【5】.

B.That’s why it’s called the present

C.In that way, it will serve you well

D.See the mistakes as a step on the road to a solution

E.There are times when we have all enjoyed success on a variety of levels

F.Recalling times when we made mistakes can help us make better future decisions

G.So, failure is the mother of success

  • 24、Michael Jordan is a former professional American basketball player, Olympic athlete, businessperson, and actor. Considered one of the best basketball players ever, he dominated (主宰) the sport from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s.

Michael began his professional basketball career when he was chosen by the Chicago Bulls in 1984. Then, there was a time when the Bulls kept adding new players and changing coaches, but they didn’t win. Seeing that, Michael felt like he needed to do all the scoring as he couldn’t trust the other players’ skills. Many people thought that Michael Jordan might never win a championship (冠军) if he kept trying to do it all by himself.

To improve their performance on the court, Coach Tex Winter taught the Bulls his triangle offense. It included sharing the ball and moving around the court in a specific way. Michael was unsure. He thought he was the only one that could make the big shots. Tex Winter told him he should learn to trust his teammates to make the triangle offense work best. But that was difficult for Michael.

The Bulls faced the Utah Jazz in the 1997 National Basketball Association Finals. After four games, the series was tied 2-2. Finally, Michael scored thirty-eight points and the Bulls won. Then, they had a chance to win the series in Game Six. Michael had the ball near the end of the game with Jazz players swarming (拥上) around him. Instead of trying a difficult shot, he passed the ball to a teammate, Steve Kerr, who made the winning basket. Michael finally trusted his teammates and he didn’t always have to take the big shot.

From then on, Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA Championships and earned the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award five times. With five regular-season MVPs and three All-Star MVPs, Michael Jordan became the greatest basketball player of all time.

【1】How did many people feel about Michael Jordan’s “one-man show”?
