四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Some people wonder why countries spend millions of dollars on space projects. They want to know how space research helps people on Earth. Actually, space technology helps people on Earth every day. This is called “spinoff technology”. Spinoff technology is space technology that is now used on Earth.

In early space programs, such as the Apollo missions(任务) of the 1960s and 1970s, and in the space shuttle missions today, scientists developed objects for the astronauts to use on the moon and in space. We now use some of these objects every day. For example, we have Quartz clocks and watches with an accuracy of one minute a year. We purify the water we drink with a water filter(过滤器) designed for the astronauts' use in space. The cordless, hand-held tools we use in our homes, such as cleaners, flashlights, drills, and irons came from the technology of these early space programs.

On cold winter days, we can stay warm with battery - operated shoes and socks, and insulated(绝缘的) coats and jackets. All of these clothes are similar to the spacesuit designs that keep astronauts comfortable in the temperatures of the moon, and are spinoffs from space technology.

These products are only a few examples of the many ways space technology helps us in our everyday life. No one knows how new spinoff technology from the International Space Station will help us in the future.

1Which of the following is NOT a spinoff?

A.Water filters B.Quartz watches C.Battery- operated socks D.Spacesuits worn by astronauts

2The underlined part “purify the water” probably means “make the water ”.

    A.light B.clean C.bright D.warm

3Which of the following is the best title of the passage?

A.Future of Space Technology B.History of Spinoffs C.Spinoff Technology   D.Space Projects

4From the passage, we can infer(推断) that the writer .

A.believes that space technology will be widely used on Earth

B.doubts if spinoffs have any good effect on human beings

C.agrees to do more research on spinoff technology

D.suggests using more spinoffs in our daily life

  • 25、There are seabirds as well as land-birds. The most ordinary seabird is the seagull. It has a white body, a white head, and a yellow beak. There is a spot of red at the very end of the beak. All gulls have very strong wings so that they can fly, far out to sea. If a gull flies out too far, and is too tired to fly back to the shore, it does not get frightened, for it can sit and rest upon the waves. A seagull’s wings do not get wet because all its feathers have a kind of oil over them, so that when the water gets on to the feathers it just runs off again. Seagulls can even sleep on the waves. Seamen know a lot about seagulls and they never kill them. When the seagulls fly a long way out to sea, seamen say that it means fine weather is coming. When the seagulls stay near the shore, seamen say that there will be much wind and rain, and perhaps a storm, for the seagulls know more about the weather than seamen do.

    【1】What is the seagull?

    A.A fish.

    B.A land-bird.

    C.A seabird.

    D.An animal.

【2】Why is every seagull able to fly far out to sea?

    A.Because it is very light.

B.Because it has very strong wings.

    C.Because it always flies high.

    D.Because it is strong enough.

【3】Why does a seagull not get frightened even when it is far away from the shore and it is too tired to fly back?

A.Because it can swim under the sea.

B.Because it can stay under the sea.

C.Because it can rest and sleep upon the waves.

D.Because it can jump into the sea.

【4】What will the weather be like if seagulls stay near the shore?

    A.Windy, rainy or stormy.

    B.Sunny and hot.

    C.Fine and warm.

    D.Freezing cold.

  • 26、When we think of paper, we think of newspapers and books. But there are many other uses. Only half of the world’s paper is used for books and newspapers.

Paper is very good for keeping you warm. You have perhaps seen homeless men asleep on a large number of newspapers. In Finland, it is sometimes-40℃in winter. The farmers wear paper boots in the snow. Nothing could be warmer.

Each year, more and more things are made of paper. We have had paper cups and plates for a long time. But now we hear that chairs, tables, and even beds can be made of paper. With paper boots and shoes, you can wear paper hats, paper dresses, and paper raincoats. When you have used them once, you throw them away and buy new ones.

The latest use of paper seems to be paper houses. These are not small houses for children to play in, but real, big houses for people to live in. You can buy a house with three rooms for about 500 dollars. You can put it up by yourself in a few hours, and you can use it for about five years.

【1】Only half of the world’s paper is used to ________.

    A.build houses

    B.help the homeless people

    C.make chairs, tables and beds

    D.print newspapers and books

【2】The farmers in Finland wear paper boots in winter ________.

    A.to feel much better

    B.to go for a walk

    C.to keep their feet warm

D.to save a lot of money

【3】Long before we began to use paper to make chairs, tables and beds, ________.

A.we could buy paper boots and shoes in paper shops

B.we could wear paper hats and paper dresses

C.we had already had paper cups and plates

D.we had no paper cups and paper plates

【4】The latest use of paper seems to be paper houses. These houses are ________.

A.big and strong enough to live for many years

B.made for children to play in or for homeless men to live in

C.made only for the rich people

D.not expensive and easy to build up

  • 28、Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words.

For most city people, the elevator is an unremarkable machine that inspires none of the enthusiasm or interest that Americans afford trains, jets, and even bicycles. Dr. Christopher Wilk is a member of a small group of elevator experts who c1 this a misunderstanding. Without the elevator, they point out, there could be no downtown skyscrapers or tall buildings, and city life as we know it would be i2. In that sense, they argue, the elevator’s role in American history has been no less significant than that of cars. In fact, according to Wilk? the car and the elevator have been locked in a “secret war” for over a century, with cars making it possible for people to spread horizontally (水平地), and elevators pushing them toward life in close groups of towering vertical (垂直的) columns.

If we tend to ignore the significance of elevators, it might be because riding in them tends to be such a brief, boring, and even awkward experience one that can involve unexpectedly meeting people with whom we have nothing in common, and an unpleasant a 3 of the fact that we’re hanging from a cable in a long passage.

In a new book, Lifted, German journalist and cultural studies professor Andreas Bernard directed all his a 4 to this experience, studying the origins of elevator and its r5 to humankind and finding that riding in an elevator has never been a totally comfortable experience. “After 150 years, we are still not used to it”, Bernard said. “We still have not exactly learned to cope with the mixture of closeness and displeasure.” That mixture, according to Bernard, sets the elevator ride apart from just about every other s6 we find ourselves in as we go about our lives.

Today, as the world’s urban population explodes, and cities become more c7 and taller, America’s total number of elevators—900,000 at last count, according to Elevator World magazine’s “2012 Vertical Transportation Industry”—are a force that’s becoming more important than ever. And for the people who really, really love them, it seems like high time that we looked seriously at just what kind of force they are.

Thank you Principal Xu, all the teachers and most importantly, the class of 2019. If I can't make my speech fantastic, I will at least try to make it short.

It’s been nearly 40 years ________ I became a member of the navy. You may be wondering how I have won so many honors as a commander-in-chief. In fact it all began from the ________ basic training which I will never forget. The training included midnight swims in the cold water, days without sleep and long painful runs in the soft sand. I always felt cold, wet, ________ and painful.

And today, I’d like to talk about one little thing, ________ I think is one of the most important points leading to great ________ .

Every morning in the training, my instructors would appear in ________ rooms. The first thing they did was ________ our beds. The corners would be square if we ________ it right. The covers would be pulled tight, and the pillow would be centered just under the headboard.

It was a simple task. But every morning we were required to make our beds perfectly. It seemed a little ________ , but the wisdom of this simple act ________ to me many times over.

If you make your bed every morning, you will have completed the first task of the day. It will bring you a small sense of success, and it will invite you to do ________ task, and one by one. And by the end of the day, one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will prove the fact. If you can’t do the little things right, you will hardly be able to do the big things ________ .

Changing the world can happen anywhere and anyone can do it. I can make sure it doesn’t matter ________ I ever served a day in uniform.
