24、The human brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms, but it can hold much more information than most computers. However, there is another difference between humans and computers.
Computers don't forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, and luckily we don't usually have to. But everyone can improve their memory if they want to. Here are some suggestions.
◆Try to use new information immediately(立刻). For example, if you meet someone who says "Hi! I'm Carlos," don't just say "Hello." Repeat the person's name. Say"____"
◆Break a big number into smaller parts. For example, it's hard to memorize (记忆) 109244153. But if you break it into three parts--109/244/153—it becomes easier.
◆Write out what you need to remember over and over again. This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially for memorizing formulas (公式) or facts.
◆Always review information. If you bring what you've learned back to your mind, they become easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it’s a good idea to review the new things you learned that day.
◆Discuss with a friend. It is always easier to remember things through discussions. You can have a discussion about what's right and what's wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.
◆Never tell yourself that you have a bad memory. You can always do something to help improve your memory. And everyone's memory gets better if they use it often enough.
All of the suggestions are helpful. If you follow them, you are certain to improve your memory.

25、 Hard Work Makes Dreams Come True
Astronaut Ellen Ochoa shows that with a good education and hard work, you can reach for the stars. Ochoa is the first Hispanic astronaut woman to fly into space.
As a child, Ochoa didn’t know what she wanted to be when she grew up. But her mother always told her to stay in school and study hard. She listened to her mother. When she was 13 years old, she won a spelling contest. In high school, Ochoa spent many hours each week studying for all her classes. She finished with the best grades in her class. After high school, Ochoa went to college. One day in college she heard that the U.S. government had chosen six women to become astronauts. At that time, Ochoa decided to become an astronaut, too.
Her many years of hard work paid off at last. She was asked to be an astronaut in 1990. In April, 1993 in the space shuttle(航天飞机) named Discovery, she made history by becoming the first Hispanic woman to travel to space. Ochoa and the other astronauts had many jobs while on the Discovery. One of her tasks was to use the shuttle’s robot arm to move large objects. Ochoa used a computer to make the arm pick up a satellite and put it into space. A satellite is a spacecraft that moves around the earth or some other objects. Satellites can take pictures and gather information about planets and stars. During her second trip in 1994, she used the robot arm again. She used the arm to pull in a satellite from space. The satellite had been used to study the air around the earth. Then Ochoa went to two more shuttle trips. Altogether, she spent a whole month in space. That’s more than 700 hours.
Ochoa knows that she is a hero to many young people. She often tells them the same thing her mother told her when she was a little girl. “Get a good education and believe in yourself,” says Ochoa.

27、 As we are getting older and older, our ability to think and remember starts to become worse. But not everyone is like this. Some people are super-agers, who are over the age of 80, but have the brain of much younger people.
Scientists know that parts of the brain become smaller in size with age. But the change of the super-agers’ goes much more slowly. In her recent study, Emily Rogalski, a neuroscientist (神经科学家), showed that super-agers have young brains. The area of the brain for attention and memory was shown to be thicker in super-agers. “When we look at a super-ager’s brain, we see that it looks more like a 50-year-old brain than an 80-year-old one”.
▲ Most of them like travelling and playing sports. They always enjoy reading. And they usually have healthy relationships and spend time with friends. “Growing old,” she adds, “does not have to be depressing and sad. Perhaps if we expect a little better from ourselves, we’ll understand that not all getting old makes us sad”.
Rogalski said jokingly that super-agers do not grow on trees — meaning they are special and few. She says she wants to find out why a super-ager’s mind is working so well and not getting old as quickly as most.
The science behind super-agers is a new, but growing field. It attracts many scientists. Scientists in the research offer the advice to us: Stay active. Learn new things. Challenge yourself. Develop healthy relationships. We may also become super-agers if we follow the advice.
