Heading to Seattle? What’s New in Washington’s Seaside City?

Advice to visit Seattle’s Pike Place Market may border on cliché—but for a good reason.

“Whether you’re visiting Washington’s seaside city for vacation or just stopping by en route to and from the coming Sasquatch music festival, Pike Place is an easy catch-all destination for shopping, eating and just plain walking around,” said Kirk Johnson, The New York Times’s Seattle bureau chief for the past three years.

The Seattle Great Wheel is one of many stops to consider in Washington’s seaside city.

“Almost any day of the week, especially on the weekend, it’s a crazy fun scene of people shopping,” Mr. Johnson said. “There’s also pretty good food.” He recommends wandering into whatever place—especially a hole in the wall—catches your eye.

There is one specific restaurant Mr. Johnson likes: the Pink Door, which has no signage and can be found only by its rosy entrance. “It’s creative, interesting Italian,” he said. “In the summer they get a lot of great fresh vegetables and probably have the best tomato bruschetta I’ve had.”

He also recommends the nearby Pioneer Square, the oldest neighborhood in Seattle. Its historic architecture has charm, and the area isn’t bad for a lunch break, he said. The clear favorite here is Salumi—which, as the name suggests, is known for its cured meats. Mr. Johnson did warn, however, that it’s necessary to plan for the fact that the restaurant has a long line as soon as it opens.

Pioneer Square is also a portal to Seattle’s maritime world that remains alive and well. Ferry rides are a short walk away. Mr. Johnson said the ferry ride to Bainbridge Island provides “a great view of the city,” and it’s not a long ride back to the mainland.

At some point, you may see sculptures emerging on the horizon—that would be the Olympic Sculpture Park, which is operated by the Seattle Art Museum, Mr. Johnson said, and that’s worth a visit itself.

People who want to experience Seattle’s nearby charms can easily do so with a bicycle, Mr. Johnson said, if they want to get away from depending on a car. He takes a ride to Chateau Ste. Michelle, a famous winery outside the city. Starting in June, he said, Chateau Ste. Michelle hosts a summer concert series on its lawn.

【1】If you are a music lover, you are advised to go to ________.

    A. the Seattle Art Museum

    B. the Seattle Great Wheel

    C. the Olympic Sculpture Park

    D. Chateau Ste. Michelle

【2】 According to Kirk Johnson, we know that ________.

    A. people often have a good time shopping happily in Bainbridge Island

    B. it is a great challenge to find the busy and popular restaurant Salumi

    C. Pioneer Square is famous for its fascinating historic architecture

    D. cycling is far from a good way to experience Seattle’s nearby charms

【3】 What are you encouraged to do if you are going to visit Seattle?

    A. Try the tomato bruschetta in the Pink Door.

    B. Go there in groups during the winter holidays.

    C. Depend on cars for the sake of convenience.

    D. Enjoy the sculptures in Pike Place Market.

  • 23、In 1838, Charles Darwin faced a problem. Nearing his 30th birthday, he was trying to decide whether to marry. To help make his decision, Darwin made a list of the expected pluses and minuses of marrying.

Darwin is struggling with what I call a wild problem — a fork in the road of life where knowing which path is the right one isn’t obvious. How should we go ahead then, especially if we want to make a rational decision?

As we will see, the cost-benefit list that Darwin constructed is less helpful. He managed to come up with more minuses than pluses. His list — especially of pluses is the list made by who has never been married and has no access to the upside of the inner life of a married man. With many wild problems, the downside is easily imagined, while the upside is hidden from us. That’s one reason wild problems are so hard to tackle with the standard tools of rationality.

Less than a year later, Darwin married and had seven surviving children. Somehow, he managed to become one of the greatest scientists of all time and forever changed our understanding of who we human beings are. What’s the lesson to be learned from his decision-making process?

Life is more than accumulating pleasure or avoid pain. Humans want purpose. We want meaning. We want to belong to something larger than ourselves. The decisions we make in the face of wild problems don’t lead to good days and bad days. They define us. They determine who we are, who we might aspire to become, who we might come to be.

Learn from Darwin. Spend less time trying to figure out the best path to get to where we want to go and spend more time thinking about where we want to go in the first place.

【1】How did Darwin decide whether to marry at first?

    A.He made a rational decision.

B.He was struggling with a wild problem.

C.He constructed a list of costs and benefits.

D.He came up with more pluses than minuses.

【2】What is the author’s attitude towards the standard tools of rationality?

    A.Critical.

    B.Impartial.

    C.Unconcerned.

    D.Approval.

【3】What does the underlined word “aspire” mean in Paragraph 5?

    A.pretend

    B.manage

    C.need

    D.dream

【4】What can be learned from Darwin’s lesson?

A.Life has more pleasure than pain.

B.It is crucial to figure out our purpose.

C.Life is about good days and bad days.

D.How to best tackle problems defines us.

  • 24、   Paris is the city of dreams. If you plan to head to Paris for a study period, then perhaps a little reality check is in order. But my experience was a romantic one.

I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program. On arrival in Paris, I was constantly reminded of the official processes I had to complete-forms to be filled in, meetings to attend, the list seemed endless.

Then the real work began. Once classes were underway, I found myself volunteering to do oral presentations and assignments first, rather than last. This method proved to be very helpful.

Once I had finished class for the week, I had an ever-increasing list of museums to visit, neighborhoods to explore, and cafes to sit in. Read books about Paris. Talk to locals and other foreigners living there. But the one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot. The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy that I experience in Paris as an exchange student.

After spending five months wandering through the charming neighborhoods, fell in love with the atmosphere that came out from every open door, and with every spoken word. There is something comforting about walking to the market each Sunday to en joy the beautiful display of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. There is warmth in saying “bonjour” (你好) to the passers-by.

On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, “Bon jour Monsieur,” as I passed the little store down the street, I guess the best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. And I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.

1What does the underlined word “ecstasy” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Courage. B.Imagination. C.Happiness. D.Reputation.

2What does the passage mainly tell us?

    A.An exchange student’s life. B.Charming neighborhoods.

C.Ah exchange program. D.A traveling experience.

3Beyond reading books, which experience would the author treasure most?

A.Enjoying coffee in his spare time. B.Greeting people in French in the street.

C.Buying vegetables in the market. D.Hanging around in Paris.

4According to the passage, what left the author the deepest impression?

A.The friendly people he met in Paris.

B.The special culture he experienced in the city.

C.The academic achievement he made in his study.

D.The presentations and assignments he did in class.

Attention is turning to the health and wellbeing of this fast-growing workforce, which _________ about 1.3m in the U.K. One academic is even calling for a “Gighall” study—similar to the landmark Whitehall _________ into the health of civil servants.

Those studies, conducted over three decades by Sir Michael Marmot, demonstrated the _________ between socio-economic status and health, a correlation that became known as “status syndrome”. The _________ of powerlessness that afflicts (折磨;使痛苦) many in the gig economy—according to one survey, only four out of 10 gig workers (零工) feel like they are their own __________—suggests that health problems may be brewing in this sizeable slice of workforce.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Throughout our lives, we have encountered a lot of people that have influenced us in some sense. Their effect may be for one day or a lifetime. Often, you don’t realize how much influence someone has made on you until a particular moment. The man who made a big influence on me was my father.

Three months after turning fourteen, my life was great. I was getting settled into a high school; my grades were already getting better and I was making friends.

One day, when I got back from school, I went to the sitting room and saw my parents having a conversation. They came up to me and asked me to take a seat, because they wanted to say something very important. I soon found out that my dad’s liver(肝脏) was failing and he needed an immediate transplant(器官移植). I was surprised and bewildered(不知所措的) because my father looked all right. He worked, and he didn’t seem ill. My parents said I shouldn’t be afraid, because it was going to be all right. Four months had gone by, and my father had yet to get a new liver. It looked as if his body was steadily worsening, but he kept saying, “Dear, everything will be just fine.”

It was becoming difficult for me and my family. My father had to give up work, and my mother was the sole breadwinner(养家糊口的人). I had to bear the responsibilities of cleaning up the house making food, and looking after my father when my mother was at work. I had to limit my time with my friends, because my father started coming in and out of the hospital. My concentration on the subject was beginning to slip away. So were my grades. Two days before my school spring break, my mother got a phone call from the hospital, saying my father had an accident and was in hospital. What surprised me was that my father wasn’t injured at all. Then the next day, my mother got a phone call from the doctor saying that there was a liver that matched my dad’s body and that he needed to get to the hospital immediately.
