二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、阅读理解

For my grandmother’s 70th birthday,my family and I visited South Korea. While there,I was attentive to Korean high schools and students.

I was surprised by how different Korea’s public high schools are from America’s.Korean high schools can be allgirls, allboys or coed (男女同校的) unlike our standard coed high schools. There are three grades:“go 1(10th)”,“go 2(11th)” and “go 3(12th)”.“Go” is the first syllable of the word “godeunghakkyo”,which, simply translated,is “high school”.

In America, unless you want to go to a private school, you don’t have to take an entrance exam.In Korea, however, students must take a test to get in because of the many choices of schools.

Another difference I couldn’t help but notice was the students’ appearance. With very few exceptions, all wear uniforms. A name tag (标牌) with the student’s name, grade and homeroom number must also be worn.Girl’s skirts can’t be above the upper part of the knee, and it is forbidden to dye(染) your hair or wear accessories (装饰品) except small earrings. There are strict regulations for appearance to achieve neatness, and it seems the only freedom students have is with their choices of hair style, socks and shoes.

The final difference was the setup of the classes. There may be 40 students in a classroom, but the number can be less or even more, depending on the population of the town or city.Although there are many students per classroom, they are very close, which I think is a result of not changing classrooms for different subjects. There are no levels in the subjects and the teachers are the ones who switch classrooms. They just have tenminute breaks between subjects. In each class, students are ranked by their grades. This causes strict competition, and Korean students do a lot of studying. To help them, all schools have extra study classes after school. One other fact that helped me appreciate living in America is that Koreans have school on Saturdays.Although it’s only a half day,I think I speak for most Americans when I say we could never imagine ourselves in school on a Saturday.

Korea’s public high schools are clearly different from America’s.I had imagined them to be just like our schools, but now I have a clear picture of how different they are.

【1】How many main differences are mentioned between Korea’s public high school and America’s?

    A.3.    B.4.

    C.5.     D.6.

【2】It seems that the writer ________.

A.is familiar with the education system of high schools in Korea

B.is fond of Korean students’ appearance

C.prefers the high school life of America to the one of Korea

D.feels it common to have lessons on weekends

【3】What does the underlined word “setup” in paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Arrangement.  B.Size.

    C.Number.    D.Outline.

【4】According to the rules, the students of Korea can ________.

A.go to different high schools without exams

B.wear any clothes except uniforms at school

C.attend different classes as they like

    D.have different hair styles

  • 22、The world's first hamburger doesn't come from where you think it comes from. It wasn't invented in the United States, and it didn't originate in Germany. No, the world's first hamburger comes from China.

If you're scratching your head right now, you're not alone. But Chinese hamburgers are very real and they definitely predate the hamburgers we call our own in the U.S. Known as rou jia mo, which translates to "meat burger" or "meat sandwich", they consist of chopped meat inside a pita-like bun, and they've been around since the Qin Dynasty, from about 221 BC to 207 BC. Despite the differences between this Chinese street food and our American-style burgers, the rou jia mo has been called the world's first hamburger.

The rou jia mo originated in the Shanxi Province of China, and is now eaten all over the country. It's typically prepared and eaten on the street. The dough for the bun, or mo, consists of a simple mixture of wheat flour, water and maybe yeast. Of course recipes may vary, but this basic equation makes for a chewy and subtle pillow for the delicious filling. While the mo is traditionally baked in a clay oven, today it's often fried in a pan. They may look a little like Chinese steamed buns or baozi, but the dough for those are, of course, steamed, not baked or fried.

The meat filling might consist of chopped pork, beef, lamb or chicken that has been stewed with a variety of spices, like ginger, cloves, coriander and star anise. You might also find herbs like cilantro or greens like lettuce garnishing the sandwich.

【1】What does the underlined word mean?

    A. noodle   B. food C. bread D. beverage

【2】Which of the following is TRUE?

    A. The mo people eat today is baked in a clay oven.

    B. The world's first hamburger which was originated in the Shanxi Province of China is popular around the world.

    C. The rou jia mo has a history of more than 2200 years.

    D. The rou jia mo and American-style burgers share a similar cooking process.

【3】What would be the best title for the passage?

    A. Delicious hamburger

    B. How to cook hamburger

    C. Chinese invented hamburger

    D. History of hamburger

  • 23、Easy Habits That Help You Live Longer

    ♦ Go for a jog

Among all the things you can do to achieve longevity, one of the most critical is to exercise. Aerobic activity, like running, is important for getting your blood pumping and your heart working. A recent study showed that a one-hour run adds seven hours to your life, up to four hours per week. People who run have a 25 to 40 percent reduced risk of early death, and live about three years longer.

♦Get more sun—but not too much

The “Sunshine vitamin” -vitamin D, that is-has been shown to fight disease, improve bone health, and avoid depression. One study even found it to extend lifespan by 33 percent. But because vitamin D comes from the sun, and our modem lives don't let us spend much time outside, we might not be getting enough. Getting 15 to 30 minutes of sun exposure a day should be enough for vitamin D production.

    ♦ Eat more plant protein

A recent study from Harvard found that people who ate a diet high in processed meats like ham, were at a higher risk of death—but those who got their protein from plants had a lower risk, especially of heart disease-related deaths. The study said that for every three percent increase in calories from plant protein there was a reduction in risk of death by 10 percent.

    ♦Eat nuts

Although you may think nuts are unhealthy because they are calorically high, the exact opposite is true—they can actually extend your life. A study from Harvard found that daily nut-eaters were 20 percent less likely to die during the study. Specifically, the rates of death from heart and breathing disease were reduced. Other research has shown walnuts have a huge role in heart health because of the amount of antioxidants (抗氧剂)they contain.

1How long can you extend your life in a week by running?

    A. 1 hour.   B. 4 hours.

    C. 7 hours.   D. 28 hours.

2What is special about proper sunshine compared with the other three tips?

    A. It lengths life.

    B. It benefits bone.

    C. It fights heart diseases.

    D. It makes breathing system healthy.

3Which of the following best describes the last two tips?

    A. Plant food is better than meat.

    B. Heart disease causes the most deaths.

    C. Nuts are unhealthy food.

    D. Proper diets improve health.

  • 24、The United States seems to have become extremely enthusiastic about competition. The famous Scripps National Spelling Bee—an annual spelling contest—now allows kids who last in regional competitions but whose parents agree to pay an entry fee (费用) along with their own food and accommodation to compete. And while some kids are working for what they call a spelling “career”, others are approaching chess competitions, dance competitions, cooking or other passions that previous generations developed somewhat later in life.

I’m disturbed by the phenomenon (现象), which seems to be getting worse and more intense.

My teacher always warned us that competition is a destructive quality; that the goal is never to beat anyone else. I think he’ll be cheered by author Peggy Noonan’s idea that a lot of us are running our own races, trying to rise to the occasion and beat some past and limited conception of ourselves by doing something great.

I heartily agree. Instead of paying attention to the accomplishments or possessions of others, we need to focus on our own potential, our own growth and take pleasure in our own particular set of circumstances. The battle for life is not against anyone else but against the darkness inside that tries to bring us down. I wish you only well. Your good doesn’t reduce mine. Your bad gives me no pleasure

Ms. Noonan also suggests that “you’re running your own race alongside others running theirs, and in the same direction. You’re doing something great together.” If we stop worrying about what our neighbor is earning or driving, the size of his house, the success of his marriage, the accomplishments of his children, we can sit back and enjoy our own lives. And if we all focus on what we each can achieve, regardless of anyone else, we have a chance of working as one, of actually being united.

Competition divides us. There are winners and losers. But that’s a very limited picture of reality. It may apply to spelling bees and soccer matches and even in some college classes, but life isn’t about triumphing (战胜) over someone else; it’s about triumphing over ourselves. The only acceptable competition is one where we encourage each other to be the best human being possible, and that’s the only game where “everyone is a winner”.

【1】What does the author worry about?

    A.Youth competition is fierce.

    B.Youth competition is expensive.

    C.Youth competition lacks fairness.

    D.Youth competition lacks diversity.

【2】What do you know about Peggy Noonan?

    A.She’s also a student of the author’s teacher’s.

B.She thinks competition is a destructive quality.

C.She taught the author how to understand competition.

D.She and the author’s teacher have similar views on competition.

【3】What should we do in the battle for life according to the author?

    A.Know our competitors well.

    B.Leave everything to chance.

C.Get rid of the bad things inside us.

D.Learn from others’ successes and failures.

【4】How does Peggy Noonan describe the way people live their lives?

A.People take turns to lead the race.

B.People follow parallel paths to each other.

    C.One man’s loss is another man’s gain.

D.No one goes in the same direction as anyone else.

【5】What could be the best title for the passage?

A.Your Real Competition Is With Yourself

B.Everyone Is a Winner in the Battle for Life

C.Competition Is a Good Thing, But Not to the Youth

D.Through Competition, We Become Better Ourselves
