Why is “buy things” in Chinese spoken as maidongxi (buy east and west) , but not mainanbei (buy south and north)?
One theory (假说) says maidongxi has 【1】 to do with the five elements (要素): jin (metal), mu (wood), shui (water), huo (fire) and tu (earth). In Chinese culture, the four 【2】 have to do with these elements. East matches wood, west matches metal, south matches fire, and north matches water. If someone carries nan (south) and bei (north) in a basket, it means to 【3】 water and fire, which is not even possible. But if one puts dong (east) and xi (west) in one’s basket, of course they can carry metal and wood.
There are also more common explanations.
One says that in the Tang Dynasty (唐代), there 【4】 two popular markets in Chang’an, the capital of China at that time. One was called the East Market, and the 【5】was called the West Market. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market 【6】, and then went to the West Market. As time went 【7】, people started to describe shopping as “buying east and west.”
The last theory is about China’s trading history. Around the 15th 【8】, China began trading with the world, and most of its foreign goods (货物) happened to come from the east (Japan) and west (Arabia). Markets 【9】 “things from the east and the west”. It was short for “east and west” 【10】.

21、 Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone’s eyes are different. So in the future you won’t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.
The eye-recognition (眼睛识别) program has already been tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology (技术) will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.
However, scientists are also working on other systems (系统). Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your finger.
Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes. So the eye-recognition program can be up to 94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. However, some other programs may only be 51% correct at present. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.
In the future your computer will be looking at you in the eye. So smile!

22、As a mountain, 1,642-foot squad Peak isn’t that impressive (给人深刻印象的). But its views attract many hikers (远足者). Hear Grant, a college student at Ithaca College, was one of them.

When Grant’s mother rejoined (与……再会合) him, the two continued on their way. Suddenly, he heard something scaring. “Paula! Paula!” a man shouted crazily. Grant turned around quickly.

But when he saw some hikers still searching, he decided to lend a hand. After promising his mother that he would be safe, he went on alone.
After 15 minutes of climbing over large rocks, pushing past bushes, and slipping (滑) down loose earth, Grant found a pink figure. The woman had fallen about 75 feet. Luckily, she was alive (活着的).
“Paula! Paula!” Grant shouted. The woman didn’t reply. She was badly hurt. Grant called the police to report her location (位置). She kept trying to move, and every time she moved, she slipped a little more. Afraid that in her unclear state of mind she might fall off the rock to her death, Grant climbed on all fours up a tight and narrow path by digging into the earth with his fingers and feet until he reached Paula.
Paula was moaning (呻吟), almost senseless. Grant gently put her hand in his, trying to keep her mind off the pain by keeping asking her questions: “Where are you from? Do you have kids?” Soon, they were joined on their perch (歇脚处) by another hiker named Simon.

24、A city in California has got some new buses. They cost $490, 000 each. The new buses are different from the old ones. These new buses are better for the environment. They are called hybrid(混合动力的)buses. They run on diesel(柴油的)and electric power. This will help keep the air cleaner.
The man drove the new bus on Wednesday and noticed a difference right away. “I get to have clean air for a change", said driver Melvin Day. "I'm smelling diesel all day long when I drive the old ones.”
The company that builds the buses had many good things to say about them. For example, they said they use a lot less fuel(燃料).They also said that they are 90% cleaner for the environment. The buses are very quiet, too.
The buses have a diesel engine in the back and batteries(电池)on top. When the engine starts up, it is powered by electricity. Then the diesel power takes over.
Over time the city would like to use the new hybrid buses instead of all 50 of their buses. They hope to do this over the next three years. The city will give money to help buy the new kind of buses.
