二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、In a certain store where they sell puddings, a number of these delicious things are laid out in a row during the Christmas season. Here you may select the one which is most to your taste, and you are even allowed to sample them before coming to a decision.

I have often wondered whether some people, who had no intention of making a purchase, would take advantage of this privilege. One day I asked this question of the shop girl, and I learned it was indeed the case. “Now there’s one old gentleman, for instance,” she told me, “he comes here almost every week and samples each one of the puddings, though he never buys anything, and I suspect he never will. I remember him from last year and the year before that, too. Well, let him come if he wants it, and welcome to it. And what’s more, I hope there are a lot more stores where he can go and get his share. He looks as if he needed it all right, and I suppose they can afford it.”

She was still speaking when an elderly gentleman limped up to the counter and began looking closely at the row of puddings with great interest. “Why, that’s the very gentleman I’ve been telling you about,” whispered the shop girl. “Just watch him now.” And then turning to him: “Would you like to sample them, sir? Here’s a spoon for you to use. “The elderly gentleman, who was poorly but neatly dressed, accepted the spoon and began eagerly to sample one after another of the puddings, only breaking off occasionally to wipe his red eyes with a large torn handkerchief. “This is quite good”. “This is not bad either, but a little too heavy”. All the time it was quite evident that he sincerely believed that he might eventually buy one of these puddings, and I am positive that he did not for a moment feel that he was in any way cheating the store. Poor old chap! Probably he had come down in the world and this sampling was all that was left him from the time when he could afford to come and select his favorite pudding.

Amidst the crowd of happy, prosperous looking Christmas shoppers, the little black figure of the old man seemed pitiful and out of place, and in a burst of benevolence, I went up to him and said:

“Pardon me, sir, will you do me a favor? Let me purchase you one of these puddings. It would give me such pleasure.”

He jumped back as if he had been stung, and the blood rushed into his wrinkled face.

“Excuse me,” he said, with more dignity than I would have thought possible considering his appearance, “I do not believe I have the pleasure of knowing you. Undoubtedly you have mistaken me for someone else.” And with a quick decision he turned to the shop girl and said in a loud voice, “Kindly pack me up this one here. I will take it with me.” He pointed at one of the largest and most expensive of the puddings.

The girl took down the pudding from its stand and started to make a parcel of it, While he pulled out a worn little black pocketbook and began counting out shillings and pennies on to the counter. To save his “honor”, he had been forced into a purchase which he could not possibly afford. How I longed for the power to unsay my tactless words! It was too late though, and I felt that the kindest thing I could do now would be walk away.

“You pay at the desk,” the shop girl was telling him, but he did not seem to understand and kept trying to put the coins into her hand. And that was the last I saw or heard of the old man. Now he can never go there to sample puddings and more.

  • 27、   In order to reduce the risk of suffering from COVID-19, people are supposed to say no to a handshake, give up high fives, refuse kisses on the cheek and absolutely avoid hugging. So people all over the world are changing their daily habits at work and at home to prevent it from spreading.

In France, handshaking is regarded as daily greeting habits. And kissing on the cheek is often seen even between people who have only just met. Philippe Lichtfus, a lifestyle expert notes that handshaking is a relatively recent development in human history that began in the Middle Ages. Now, he says simply looking into a person’s eyes can serve as a greeting.

The Brazilian health ministry has recommended that citizens should not share the metal straws traditionally used to consume the caffeine-rich drink chimarrão. And a kiss—even if it is not on the mouth—is totally advised against.

One of Spain’s most treasured traditions is also affected by the outbreak—the kissing of sculptures of Virgin Mary in the week leading up to Easter. During the holy week, the faithful believers queue up to kiss the hands or feet of sculptures of Mary and the saints, seeking their protection.

Germany’s interior minister (内政部长) Horst Seehofer rebuffed Chancellor(总理)Angela Merkel’s attempt to shake hands with him, smiling and keeping both his hands to himself. They both laughed and Merkel threw her hand up in the air before taking a seat.

In Iran, a video has gone viral (走红) showing three friends meeting, hands in their pockets, two of whom are wearing masks, tapping their feet against each other as a greeting. A similar video in Lebanon shows singer Ragheb Alama and comedian Michel Abou Sleiman tapping their feet against each other while making kissing noises with their mouths.

The UAE (阿拉伯联合酋长国) is advising citizens to stop the traditional “nose to nose” greeting. The UAE also said that people shouldn’t shake hands anymore or kiss. Greet each other “by waving only”.

【1】What can we learn from Philippe Lichtfus?

    A.Handshaking has a long history.

B.People can continue to kiss on the cheek.

C.It is recommended that people look into other’s eyes as a greeting.

D.It is unusual for two people who have just met to kiss on the cheeks.

【2】What does the underlined word “rebuffed” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Appreciated.

    B.Refused.

    C.Accepted.

    D.Welcomed.

【3】What can be inferred from the text?

A.Several traditional greeting habits are advised against in the UAE.

B.People who believe in Virgin Mary must be disappointed to cancel the ceremony.

C.Brazilians are crazy about consuming the caffeine-rich drink chimarrão.

D.Tapping feet against each other has already become a daily greeting in Iran.

【4】What does the text mainly tell us?

A.Some old greeting styles are out of date.

B.Some new greeting styles become popular.

C.Different countries have different greeting styles.

D.People change their greeting styles to protect themselves.

  • 28、Why do we always want to go faster? I am talking about travel. We want our cars, trains and planes to get us to places quicker. This century, there’s been a rise in high-speed rail travel as people have seen the benefits of this form of transport.

I love train travel and have experienced the efficient and fast trains that operate in France and Japan. The acceleration and top speed of these trains are impressive. The space and comfort on board make it comfortable and the ability to see something out of the window means, according to me, it will beat air travel one day.

Spain recently joined the railway revolution with its AVE ultra-modern high-speed train that has a top speed of 310 kilometers per hour. Its service from Madrid to Barcelona took 20% of passengers away from Spain’s national airline. In Japan, a magnetic train that will run at 500 kilometers per hour is being developed.

This has categorized rail travel in Britain as the slow line. It has one high-speed line from London to France – HIS- but now it is planning to construct a new line called HS2 which will connect London with the north of England. The U. K. government, transport secretary says, “This is essential to actually making sure that our great cities are connected and we get the right benefits for the United Kingdom.”

But not everyone agrees. The idea of fast train travel may appeal but not if it, going to be built in your backyard. It’s controversial: people are arguing over the benefits and cost of having shorter journey time, less traffic on the roads and more capacity on the tall network.

John Kelleher, who is a farmer and lives on the proposed site of the new line, says, “They’ re not taking the destruction into consideration, which HS2 will cause on its construction sites and routes through the countryside.” Some people are worried the financial and environmental cost of saving just half an hour on a journey will be too high. But other countries have shown that high-speed rail is good for the economy. It has helped poorer parts of the country reduce the need to fly and has made train travel cool.

1Which is the most comfortable form of travel according to the author?

    A. Rail.   B. Air.

    C. Highway.   D. Underground.

2Which statement is not the benefit of the fast train travel?

    A. Construction of it will benefit the environment of the countryside.

    B. It reduces traffic jam.

    C. It saves some time on a journey.

    D. It can hold more people.

3What is the author, attitude toward the fast train?

    A. Supportive.   B. Negative.

    C. Doubtful.   D. Objective.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. People benefit from high-speed rail a lot.

    B. More and more people are fond of traveling.

    C. High-speed rail travel has developed quickly recently.

    D. Travel means having a vital effect on local economy.

  • 29、   For most of us, swinging (摆动)360 degrees around the spindle (轴)of a swing set is a distant childhood dream, but for some people in Estonia, it's what they never grew out of Not only do they still love struggling against gravity (重力),but they actually created a competitive sport around their favourite entertainment. That spoil is known as "kiiking”.

Swings are deep in Estonian culture, and you can still find various types of swings in villages and towns all around the country They are used by children and adults alike, either for simple fun, or as a way for communities to bond during celebrations. So maybe it doesn't come as a big surprise that Estonia has an extreme sport based on swinging. Some people feel it dull, others pointless, but to those who practise it, kiiking is the coolest thing in the world.

The rules of kiiking are pretty simple. Competitors start swinging at a certain height, and if they can complete a full circuit (圈)around the spin die, they can attempt to do the same after the swing has been raised by a few centimeters, and so on. Those who fail to do a full spindle are left with the result of their last successful attempt.

Watching kiiking videos might give you the impression that it's an easy sport, but Laansalu, who has been practising it since she was 8 years old, says it requires not only great physical strengthstrong legs and strong arms,  but also technique—knowing when to stand or sit in the swing chair, and when to push yourself over the spindle of the swing.

There are no international kiiking competitions yet, but Estonia has several national kiiking events throughout the year.

1What can we know about kiiking from the text?

A.It is very easy and safe.

    B.It is intended for children.

    C.It is an international sport.

    D.It is developed from swinging.

2What should competitors pay attention to in kiiking according to the text?

    A.The strength of the swing.

    B.The way to push themselves.

C.The time to stand or sit on the swing.

D.The position where they end the sport.

3What decides the success of a competitor in kiiking?

A.The number of circuits he completes.

B.The height where he completes a full circuit.

C.How long it takes to complete a full circuit.

D.How long he performs on the swing.

4Which is the best title of the passage?

A.Kiiking B.A Competitive Sport in Estonia

C.A Childhood Dream D.Who Is the Winner?
