  • 25、Ever since the 19th century, people’s search for improved ways of producing electricity has never stopped. Now a UK company has developed a new kind of floor. It is very special. There is a system that can produce a certain amount of electricity very cheaply using the energy from footsteps. That is to say, every time people step on this special floor, electricity is produced.

The inventor of the floor came up with the idea when he was a student and worked in an energy business. The business asked him to find ways to power up street lights in the city center using the energy from the sun, but it soon became clear that this might not work because many city centers didn’t get enough sunlight because of tall buildings. Then he thought of a better plan.

Why not use the energy produced by people who walk past the street instead? The right technology could be used to convert this energy into electricity right under people’s feet.

The floor could actually be very efficient (效率高的). This is especially true when it is used in very busy areas. And the reason is that a lot of energy is produced simply because of large numbers of people walking across the floor. The floor can have other uses too, such as recording how many people visit a particular (特定的) place at particular times. This kind of information is very useful for certain people. For example, shop owners near the place would be interested in knowing what time of the day they have the highest customer numbers. The technology was created out of a hope of making energy that is untouchable closer to people. The business also said it tried to find a way for people to further their understanding of problems of climate change and sustainability (可持续性).

【1】What is special about the new kind of floor?

A.It can be used in many busy areas in cities.

B.It depends on sunlight to produce electricity.

C.It can provide customers shopping information.

D.It produces electricity with the energy from footsteps.

【2】Many city centers fail to get enough sunlight because ________.

    A.the traffic is always busy

    B.the skies aren’t clear

    C.the buildings are tall

    D.the environment is polluted

【3】The underlined word “convert” probably means ________ in this passage.

    A.carry

    B.change

    C.collect

    D.avoid

【4】We can learn from the passage that ________.

A.it is really difficult to produce electricity by using sunlight

B.the use of the floor may help solve the problem of climate change

C.the more people walk on the floor, the more electricity can be produced

D.the floor could be of little help to the shop owners near the street using it

【5】The best title for the passage is ________.

    A.A Creative Business

    B.A Talented Inventor

    C.A Discussion on Sunlight

D.A New Way of Producing electricity

  • 26、Language changes all the time. New words and phrases appear and grow. The words and pronunciations used by young people in the UK can be very different from those used by adults. Living in a multi-cultural society has an effect on language, especially on young people, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds. TV and music also influence the language of the young.

Young British people use lots of language that you usually can’t find in most dictionaries. These extremely informal words and expressions are known as “slang”. It is not possible to make a complete list of modern British slang. By the time the list were finished, it would be out of date! However, here are a few examples:

Safe, sorted, sound, cool and wicked all mean “That’s good” or “I understand”.

    “Whatever” means “I don’t care”. (e. g. A: But the teacher says we can’t leave until we’ve finished. B: Whatever. I’m going.)

“He’s fine.” and “He’s fit.” both mean “He’s good-looking.” Fine and fit can describe a boy or a girl.

Not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in Sheffield has recently required its pupils to stop using slang words such as hiya(hello), cheers and ta (both mean “thank you”). The head teacher says that if young people learn to speak “correctly”, this will help them get a place at university and a good job.

So, how important is it to understand these slang words and expressions? If you watch films or TV in English, read magazines in English, chat online in English or are interested in English song lyrics, then understanding slang can be very useful. You probably won’t see much slang in your English exam, though.

【1】Which is the best word to complete the blank?

Peter: I’ve just passed my exam!

    Jenny: _________! Well done!

    A.Cheers

    B.Whatever

    C.Hiya

    D.Cool

【2】What might be the reason why British young people use slang?

A.Slang is easy to pronounce and understand.

B.They have friends from different cultures.

C.They cannot tell slang from formal English.

D.They use slang to make their speech clearer.

【3】The example of the school in Sheffield shows that _________.

A.many British schools encourage the use of slang

B.speaking slang helps young people to get better jobs

C.children from different cultures feel respected

D.slang is not considered as proper English in schools

【4】Understanding slang might not be useful when you ___________.

A.watch films and TV in English

    B.read magazines in English

    C.do English exam papers

    D.talk to your British net-pals

【5】Which of the following statements is TRUE?

    A.Modern slang changes very quickly.

B.Young people use the same slang as their parents.

C.“Fit” is only used to describe boys.

D.It’s a must to learn some British slang.

    【6】The author’s main purpose is to __________.

A.argue that slang should be stopped

B.explain the best way to learn slang

    C.tell readers about British slang

    D.amuse readers with slang words

  • 27、

Nowadays, people usually shake hands when they meet each other. Do the Chinese always greet others like this? In fact, handshaking was introduced to our country around 100 years ago.

There were several kinds of greeting in ancient China. Among them the fist and palm salute (拱手礼) was a quite common one, with a history of about 3,000 years. It was first used by people in the West Zhou Dynasty. In ancient times, if people met a stranger, their hands were always ready for holding something used for fighting. Holding out both hands showed that people could feel relaxed.

When people meet, men usually use their left hand to hold the right one. It’s believed that people considered the left as the important side for men in Chinese history. While for women, the important side is the right. So when they give the fist and palm salute, they should put their right hand on the top. When someone presents the fist and palm salute to you, you are supposed to do it back as well.

In many wuxia or kung fu TV series and movies, people greet each other with the hold fist salute, or Baoquan in Chinese. The gesture (手势) is that the right hand is made a fist, while the left hand is to cover the right fist. It’s similar to the fist and palm salute, but they are different. Baoquan is widely used among kung fu masters and students.

    So, don’t make a mistake.

    正确的涂“A”,错误的涂“B”。

【1】Handshaking first started in China and then was spread to other places.

【2】In West Zhou Dynasty, having empty hands showed that people could feel relaxed.

【3】In ancient China, women should greet men by using their left hand to hold the right one.

【4】The hold fist salute can only be seen in wuxia or kung fu TV series and movies.

【5】The passage mentions three ways of greeting people in China.
