  • 25、The art of facial makeup in Chinese opera has a long history. There are many legends(传说)about its origins(起源). Among them, the most interesting one says that facial makeup originated in song and dance drama.

The Prince Lanling (541—573) was very brave and wise, but every time he led his army into battle, he was always looked down upon all because of his beautiful face. This brought down the spirit of his army. So, in order to improve his image(形象)as a powerful general, he made himself a mask with the image of a scary ghost.

This method greatly frightened his enemy forces and brought him lots of success. To praise his outstanding armed achievements, people wrote a song about him. During the performance, the dancers wore masks. Later the masks evolved into colored masks, which were the predecessors (前身)of facial makeup used in Peking Opera, the most central form of Chinese opera.

The facial makeup is a special way of portrayal(肖像)in the traditional Chinese opera. The art of facial makeup contains a lot about Chinese culture. It is now becoming more popular with many young people starting to honor the beauty of Chinese opera.

Main Characters in Peking Opera are Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. Sheng represents the male roles. Dan represents the female roles. Jing is a rather complex male character that has various characteristics, such as rude, heroic, and sacred. Chou, meaning clown, represents the comic role.

  • 27、Imagine getting the chance to go camping for five days. It would be an adventure  in the wild. You could row on a lake every day and leave your smartphone at home. Would you want to try this?

In June, four teenage girls from Minnesota, US, went camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. They had a great time – even without their smartphones.

Julia Ruelle, 16, put the group together. Earlier this year, she won an essay contest held by a company. The award was a five-day camping adventure with up to three friends. No parents or guides would be there. This award was supposed to encourage kids to be less dependent on their smartphones.

Ruelle had been to the area before, but she had always gone with her parents. Sharing the experience with friends would be very different. She invited three friends: Anna Wander, Madeline Wilson, and Julianna Torelli.

They came up with a daily plan. “We would wake up early every day. We were done paddling by noon. We ate lunch at the camp. Then it was time for hammocks , reading, writing, making friendship bracelets, talking and napping,” Ruelle said.

“I’m a lot less worried about things,” Wander said when asking how she felt without her cellphone. Her favorite thing to do was to lie in her hammock and look at the lake. Torelli enjoyed cooking. She made blueberry pancakes and sandwiches.

No one felt hungry or homesick. “Mental health can be improved so much. It really helps to get away your smartphones and return to nature.” Ruelle said.

1The camping trip was special because the girls _____.

    A. had to live on a boat for several days   B. needed to finish many tasks

    C. had to live without their smart phones   D. needed to find a guide on their own

2Julia Ruelle got the chance to camp by _____.

    A. not using her smartphone at school   B. asking her parents for help

    C. working in a company   D. winning an essay contest

3How did the girls feel at the end of the trip?

    A. Worried.   B. Happy.   C. Hungry.   D. Homesick.

4What can you learn from the passage?

    A. Life without phones will be boring.

    B. The parents had made camping plans for the girls.

    C. Wilson enjoyed making pancakes and sandwiches.

    D. Using smartphones less can improve our mental health.
