四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Read the passage and choose the best answer

When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, "Well, it's so-and-so's fault. "or "I know I'm late, but it's not my fault; the car broke down. " It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner's key to success.

Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don't rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well.

This is what being a winner is all about - creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don't have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situation to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on "whose fault it is. " Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

    1According to the passage, winners________.

A.deal with problems rather than blame others B.meet with fewer difficulties in their lives

C.have responsible and able colleagues D.blame others rather than themselves

2The underlined word remedy in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to________ .

    A.avoid B.accept C.improve D.consider

3When your colleague brings about a problem, you should________.

A.find a better way to handle the problem B.blame him for his lack of responsibility

C.tell him to find the cause of the problem D.ask another person for help

4When problems appear, winners consider themselves as ________.

    A.excuses for their failures B.chances for self-development

C.difficulties for greater power D.challenges for their colleagues

5According to the passage, which of the following sentences is wrong?

A.If you were late because your car broke down, you might start to carry the useful phone numbers with you.

B.If you want to be winners, you had better learn to use your skills and talents creatively.

C.If you want to be winners, you had better use those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop your own talents.

D.If you are confident about your power over bad situations, you will cause problems.

6Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

    A.Winner's Secret. B.A Winner's Problem.

    C.A Winner's Opportunity. D.A Winner's Achievement.

  • 25、Prefer your coffee black? Then you probably like dark, bitter chocolate, according to new research finding a genetic basis (基因偏好) for those preferences.

If that’s you, then congratulations — you are the lucky genetic winner who may have good health, according to caffeine researcher Marilyn Cornelis, an associate professor of preventive medicine. Studies find moderate amounts of black coffee have been shown to lower the risk of certain diseases.

In prior (先前的) research, Cornelis and her team discovered that a genetic variant (变体) might explain why some people enjoyed plenty of cups of coffee a day, while others did not.

In a new study, “we found coffee drinkers with the genetic variant that reflects a faster metabolism (新陈代谢) of caffeine prefer bitter, black coffee,” Cornelis said. “We also found the same genetic variant in people who prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate.”

But here’s a twist. She said people with this gene prefer black coffee because they connect the bitter flavor with the increase in mental alertness (警觉) which they want from caffeine.

“They learn to connect bitterness with caffeine and the boost they feel. When they think of caffeine, they think of a bitter taste, so they also enjoy dark chocolate.”

Future studies will try to deal with the genetic preference for other bitter foods, Cornelis said, “which are generally linked to more health benefits.”

    A.dangerous

B.Heart diseases can be treated if people drink black coffee every day.

C.Moderate amounts of black coffee may be helpful in preventing some diseases.

D.To lower the risk of certain diseases, people should avoid drinking black coffee.

【3】What does the underlined word twist” mean in the passage?

    A.扭动

    B.盘绕

    C.转折

    D.关联

【4】From Paragraph 4&5, people with the particular genetic variant ________.

    A.have a faster metabolism

    B.hardly enjoy bitter, black coffee

    C.like sweet milk chocolate better

D.connect sweet flavor with mental alertness

  • 26、I never saw my father come home from work late or ill, nor did I ever see my father take a night out with the boys. He had no hobbies but just took care of his family.

For 22 years, since I left home for college , my father called me every Sunday at 9:00 am. He was always interested in my life----how my family was doing. The calls even came when he and my mother were in Australia, England or Florida.

Nine years ago when I bought my first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days, painting my house. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked, was a glass of iced tea, and that I hold a paintbrush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy, for I had a law practice to run, and I could not take the time to hold the paintbrush, or talk to my father.

Five years ago, my 71-year-old father spent five hours putting together a swing set(秋千) for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea, and talk to him. But again, I had laundry to do, and the house to clean.

The morning on Sunday, January 16, 1996, my father telephoned me as usual, this time he had seemed to have forgotten some things we had discussed the week before. I had to get to church, and I cut the conversation short.

The call came at 4:40 am. That day my father was sent to hospital in Florida. I got on a plane immediately, and I vowed(发誓) that when I arrived, I would make up for the lost time, and have a nice long talk with him and really get to know him.

I arrived in Florida at 1:00 am, but my father had died at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, time to wait for me.

In the years since his death I have learnt much about my father, and even more about myself. As a father, he never asked me for anything but my time. Now he has all my attention, every single day.

  • 27、阅读下面短文,根据短文内容判断句子正误。正确的写“A”,错误的写 “B”。

The local people of La Gomera can carry on conversations by whistling(吹口哨) from far away. For face-to-face conversations, they speak Spanish. But when they need to speak over a distance(距离), they whistle.

La Gomera is a small island. This island is almost shaped like a circle. It is very mountainous. Walking from one place to another may be a slow and difficult job. That is why whistling is so useful to the local people. A message can easily be whistled over a couple of miles, while travelling that same distance on foot might take an hour.

A good whistler can be heard and understood five miles away. His whistling can be farther away when it is windless. It is said that the record is about nine miles. Anyone who has heard of a top whistler will agree that this record is quite possible.

A whistle travels farther than a shout, and is easier to understand. When a person shouts, he cannot pronounce his words well. But if a whistle is heard, it will be heard clearly.

Whistling is popular at La Gomera, and many methods of whistling are used…

【1】People of La Gomera speak over a distance by shouting.

【2】From Paragraph 2 we know La Gomera lies between two circles.

【3】A windless day helps a whistle travel farther.

【4】Nobody believes the whistling record is nine miles.

【5】The writer is very likely to talk about different methods of whistling in the last paragraph.
