  • 21、Oindrila Basu from India, 25, is a key member of a global forestry organization.

Back in her youth, she had to be taught the importance of nature. She used to ruin nests of the bulbul bird just for fun. Once, her mother caught her and forced her to find the eggs and replace the nest. With a heavy heart, the girl realized she had done something terrible.

This is just one way that Basu's parents shaped her understanding and appreciation of nature. Living in the countryside, she spent her youth studying ants before a rain, watching sunbirds drink bottlebrush nectar (花蜜),counting fireflies and watching seedlings grow. Then her parents decided to move to a nearby city with better educational opportunities and she stopped having firsthand experiences with nature.

As she struggled to choose a college major, her mother suggested a career in forestry. That's when her journey began and she fell in love with forestry. Away from the crowded concrete cities, in the lap of the Himalayas, she got her bachelor's degree in forestry from Kumaun University, India. When she went on to study for a master's in forestry from the Forest Research Institute, India, she finally got introduced to a like-minded group of people, dedicated to the same cause — the International Forestry Students' Association ((IFSA).

IFSA is a global organization connecting students to exchange knowledge and participate in forestry activities. The youth joining IFSA are encouraged to undertake its task — to enrich forest education and spread a love for nature through events and intercultural exchanges.

After six months of exciting international conferences and workshops, Basu found her home — a family that loved forests as much as she did. She felt rejuvenated (重生的);her passion had a direction. Now she wanted to do more.

Now with the IFSA , Basu recalled her experience of joining , " Consciously (有意识地)or subconsciously we chose forestry, or rather, forestry chose us".

【1】Basu's parents play a role in her love for nature.

    A.unique

    B.usual

    C.vague

    A.Basu's tutors

    B.people who love forests

    A.Love — Take — Study — Spread.

    D.Destroy — Experience — Love — Devote.

    【4】What's the passage mainly about?

  • 22、Some people love a great thunderstorm; others are frightened by the first flash of lightning or sound of thunder. 【1】 But there are easy steps you can take to protect your home and your life from lightning.

    Protect Electronics from Severe Weather

【2】 It can follow the wires or phone lines into your room—ruining computers, TVs and other electronics. One protection against electronics being “fried” by lightning is simply to unplug them whenever a rain or a storm is coming. Disconnect Internet and satellite dish connections no matter where they are.

    Reduce the Risk of Fire

Lightning rods (避雷针) can protect a building from catching fire. 【3】 They just provide a path for the electricity to reach the ground more safely. The rods at the top of the building are only the first part of a good system. When lightning strikes, the electricity needs to move to the ground. Wires conduct electricity from the lightning rods to metal rods buried in the ground. 【4】

    Understand Lightning

When lightning hits the ground, a tree, a tower or even a building, it may also spreads along the ground, so being near something that’s struck by lightning is almost as dangerous as being hit directly by lightning. 【5】 The Empire State Building gets struck by lightning around 20 times every year. Its lightning rod protects the structure, as well as the people inside.

A.It can even strike the same spot more than once.

B.You might want to consider protecting an entire building.

C.When this happens, anything in its path could be in danger.

D.But the chance of lightning striking your house doesn’t change.

E.Each connection must be secure so lightning doesn’t jump to the building.

F.Lightning hitting your roof or nearby power lines is terrible but not worst.

G.Whether you love or hate them, thunderstorms produce dangerous lightning.

  • 23、China is known as a state of manners and ceremony (礼节). Many proverbs have been passed down from generation to generation eg. “Polite behavior costs nothing” or “Showing respect demands reciprocity (相互)” and so on. For instance, there is an interesting short story. Once upon a time, a man went on a long tour to visit his friend with a swan as a gift. But it escaped from the cage on the way. Though he tried hard, he got hold of nothing but a feather (羽毛). Instead of returning home, he continued his journey with the swan feather. When his friend received this unexpected gift, he was deeply moved. And the saying “The gift is nothing much, but it’s the thought that counts” was spread far and wide.

Chinese used to cup one hand in the other before the chest as a greeting. This tradition has a history of more than 2, 000 years and nowadays it is seldom used except in the Spring Festival. And shaking hands is more popular on some formal occasions. Bowing, as to show respect to the higher level, is often used by the lower like subordinates (下级), students, and attendants. But at present Chinese youngsters prefer to simply nod as a greeting. To some degree this development shows the ever-increasing paces of modern life.

It is common social practice to introduce the junior to the senior, or the familiar to the unfamiliar. When you start a talk with a stranger, the topics such as weather, food, or hobbies may be good choices to break the ice. For a man, a chat about current affairs, sports, stock market or his job can usually go on smoothly. Similar to Western customs, you should be careful to ask a woman private questions. However, relaxing talks about her job or family life will never put you into danger. She is usually glad to offer you some advice on how to cook Chinese food or get used to local life. Things will be quite different when you’ve gotten to know them. Though Chinese are said to be implicit (含蓄的), they are actually humorous enough to be pleased about the jokes of Americans.

【1】The author tells the story in the first paragraph in order to ______.

    A. make fun of the stupid person

    B. explain the meaning of a Chinese saying

    C. show Chinese like valuable gifts very much

    D. show Chinese value polite behavior greatly

【2】 In Paragraph 2, the author mainly wants to introduce ______.

    A. the Chinese body language

    B. the traditional Chinese manners

    C. the development of Chinese manners

    D. the way the lower show respect to the higher

【3】 Which of the following picture shows the gesture mentioned at the beginning of Paragraph 2?

【4】 The passage is mainly about ________.

    A. Chinese proverbs

    B. Chinese humour

    C. Chinese manners

    D. Chinese body languages

  • 24、   A night at the movies is always a good idea. But when you leave the theater and realize you just dropped $45 on a ticket and some snacks, you’ll wish you had been patient enough to wait until the movie came out on Netflix. The average movie ticket price in the United States in 2000 was $5.39; now, a ticket is over $9.

The main reason that movie tickets have gotten so expensive is because of inflation(通货膨胀). It was actually more expensive to go to the movies in the 70s than it is now. A ticket in 1978 cost $2.34. If you plug that into an inflation calculator, the same ticket would cost you $9.46 today. According to the National Association of Theater Owners, the average cost for a ticket today is $9.11.

Another reason you need to dip into your life savings to see a movie on the big screen is that theaters are competing with streaming services that produce their own films, such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. And let’s be honest, sitting at home on your couch or in your bed is more comfortable than sitting in a cold theater.

Because of streaming technology, movie theaters have to do something to bring in customers. Attractions—including alcohol, reclining seats(躺椅), surround sound, and 3-D movies are all examples of that. And those upgrades come at a price, leading to more expensive tickets.

“There’s all that extra cost, and it’s really important for theater owners and companies to make that experience as enjoyable as possible,” Patrick Corcoran, vice president of the National Association of Theatre Owners told Marketplace. “Because you’re offering a superb experience—audience expectations are for the latest and greatest technology. Audiences are willing to pay more for a particular experience.”

1According to the passage, what makes movie tickets so expensive?

A.The viewers are wealthier than before.

B.The movie theatres offer popcorns, alcohol for free.

C.Inflation has made the ticket price appear higher than before.

D.The popular movies with famous stars deserve the high price.

2We can learn from the passage that ________.

A.Netflix is always a better choice for movie viewers than theatres

B.comfortable seats ensure movie theatres a distinct advantage over streaming services

C.the viewers actually pay for the updates of the movie theatres via more expensive tickets

D.the theater owners and companies update the theaters to win good fame

3Which of the following would Patrick Corcoran most probably agree with?

A.It’s unwise for viewers to pay so much to watch a movie in the theater.

B.The high price of a movie ticket is supposed to be in line with a wonderful experience.

C.It’s a waste of money to provide the latest technology in the theatre.

D.The viewers would prefer to sit at home on the couches or in the beds.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Behind the Increasing Price of Movie Tickets

    B.Technological Improvement on Movie Theatres

C.The Competition between Movie Theatre and Streaming Services

D.How to Save the Viewers' Wallets

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Cutting Our Sports Teams Is Not a Healthy Decision

Our school administration has recently proposed eliminating all sports teams, referring to a decrease in team participation, low attendance, and overall high cost of maintaining these teams. While cutting team sports from the budget would save money, the immediate and long-term negative results would not be worth the money saved.

First, though it is true that many teams have not had high numbers of participants, this is not a reason to cut all teams. A few teams still do have high participation rates and very dedicated players. One solution is to keep one or two high participation sports per season, for example, fall football, winter basketball and swimming, and spring track and baseball.

Second, the school is concerned about poor audience attendance at the games and uses this argument to support the idea that there is a decreasing interest in our teams. Although there may be lower audience numbers than in the past, the students who do go are loyal fans. Moreover, this devoted fan base has helped build a community that promotes school spirit across the campus. This school spirit affects all student s whether or not they attend each game. For example, after last year’s baseball finals, more baseball hats were sold in the campus store than ever before even though most of the students wearing the hats had not attended one game!

Finally, the administration states that the cost of keeping team sports is just too costly. Though the cost of sports teams may be high, the price paid for cutting the teams in the long term is even higher. Sports teams are a daily reminder of the importance of maintaining a balanced, healthy life style. School sports help promote life-long healthy habits. With this in mind, shouldn’t the school be putting more money into sports rather than taking it away?
