二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、An international research team led by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore has developed a material, when coated on a glass window panel, can automatically respond to changing temperatures by switching between heating and cooling, helping to cut energy usage.

The newly developed material for electrochromic (电致变色) window is designed to block infrared radiation (红外线) , which is the primary component of sunlight that gives off heat. The researchers claim the material could block up to 70 percent of infrared adiation, while allowing up to 90 percent of visible light to pass through. In addition, it is about3Qpercent more effective in managing heat than commercially available electrochromic windows, and is cheaper to make due to its durability (耐用性).

However, current electrochromic windows are only effective in blocking visible light, not the infrared radiation, so heat continues to pass through them. And they are not able to manage both heating and cooling the same time. The researchers also note that another drawback of the current technology is its durability, as they tend to degrade within three to five years.

The NTU research team believes that the new electrochromic technology can help conserve energy that will be used for the heating and cooling of buildings and could contribute to the future design of sustainable green building. "This innovation fills the missing gap between traditional smart windows and radiative cooling by paving a new research direction to reduce energy consumption, said co author Professor Gang Tan from the University of Wyoming, USA.

A Singapore patent has been filed for the innovation. As the next steps, the research team is aiming to achieve even higher energy- saving performance by working on the design of their nanocomposite (纳米复合材料) coating. The research team has partnered with an innovative glass manufacturer (制造商) for further test and to look at potentially incorporating the smart window into its projects for improved efficiency and sustainabilty.

【1】What is the feature of the newly developed material?

    A.It is energy-saving.

    B.It is cost-ineffective.

    C.It generates heat in itself.

    D.It blocks rays completely.

【2】What is the disadvantage of current electrochromic windows?

A.They can give off harmful rays.

    B.They can block infrared radiation.

C.They cannot cool rooms very well.

D.They cannot be used for five years.

【3】What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The future research on green buildings.

B.The significance of the new technology.

C.The functions of the new smart window.

D.The possible application of the innovation

【4】What will the researchers do next?

A.Test the performance of visible light.

B.Plan mass production of the windows.

C.Evaluate the outcome of their project.

    D.Create more energy efficient coating.

  • 22、Are you diligently exercising but seeing no result around your midsection(上腹部)? It's not just you. Two new studies may explain why many people who begin exercise programs often lose little to no weight in the long run.

In the first study, published in the online science journal PLoS One, researchers compared the daily energy consumption of Westerners and the Hadza, a population of hunter-gatherers living in northern Tanzania. Many believe modern Westerners burn fewer calories than in the past because their lives have become more sedentary(久坐的). The Hadza, who are generally very thin, hunt and look for food without modern tools such as vehicles or guns. Men walk about seven miles each day, while women walk about half that.

What was surprising was that although the Hadza seem to be more active, the researchers found little difference in calories burned between the Hadza and the Westerners.

The second study, published in Obesity Reviews, analyzed the effect of exercise interventions on body composition. The researchers found that—contrary to popular belief—when people exercise but keep their energy intake constant, their resting metabolic(新陈代谢的)rate actually goes down. Exercises who ate more calories than they usually do did burn more fat than predicted, but some overate and negated the effects of their hard work.

These studies suggest two things: exercise programs may not lead to as much calories burn as you would think, and many people start eating more when they exercise, and they may eat too much.

Bottom line, if you start exercising to lose weight, you won't succeed with the mentality of “I can eat anything because I'll burn it off later.” You will have better results if you choose a healthy diet of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats while exercising. Although these two studies show that diet may be more important than exercise for weight loss, don't discount the other benefits of exercise, including decreased stress and anxiety, improved mood and reduced risk of cardiovascular(心血管的)disease, diabetes and some cancers.

【1】What dose the two studies show in common?

    A.Exercises are of great benefit.

B.Exercises make people eat too much.

C.Dieting may be not so helpful for weight loss.

D.Exercises do not necessarily lead to weight loss.

【2】What does the underlined word “negated” mean?

    A.Improved.

    B.Doubled.

    C.Denied.

    D.Aroused.

【3】The text is most likely to be found in ______.

    A.a science magazine

    B.a book review

    C.a health guideline

    D.a news report

  • 23、   Being forgiving to yourself and others can protect against stress and the harm it does to mental health, according to a new study in the Journal of Health Psychology

Researchers looked at the effects of lifetime stress on a person’s mental healthand how more forgiving people got along compared with people who weren’t so forgivingTo do this, they asked 148 young adults to fill out questionnaires that assessed their levels of lifetime stresstheir tendency to forgive and their mental and physical health

No surprisepeople with greater exposure to stress had worse mental and physical healthBut the researchers also discovered that if people were highly forgiving of both themselves and others, that characteristic alone almost removed the connection between stress and mental illness

“It’s almost entirely erased—it’s zero,”says study author Toussaint.“If you don’t have forgiving tendenciesyou feel the immediate effects of stress in a severe wayYou don’t have anything to cushion you against that stress

How a forgiving personality protects a person from the influence of severe stress is hard to determineThe researchers infer that people who are more forgiving may adopt better skills to deal with stressor their reaction to major stressors(压力源)may be slow

Though more research is needed to fully understand the benefits of being more forgivingToussaint believes“100”that forgiveness can be learnedHis own previous research has shown that saying a short prayer on forgiveness can help people take the edge off. “I think most people want to feel good and forgiveness offers you the opportunity to do that”he says

1The researchers got the effect of forgiving by_____

    A.analyzing questionnaires B.doing scientific experiment

    C.writing research papers D.communicating with 148 adults

2What can we infer from the passage?

A.Forgiving tendencies can deal with all mental problems

B.It remains unknown why forgiveness helps to reduce stress

C.Toussaint’s study has fully discovered the benefits of being forgiving

D.Saying a short prayer on forgiveness is the key to getting rid of stress

3What does the underlined phrase “take the edge off’ in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Look ahead B.Become relaxed

C.Make up their mind D.Stick to their goals

4What may be the best title for the passage?

A.A new study on physical health

B.Forgiving yourself makes you feel good

C.Forgiveness is good for mental health

D.Getting rid of stress is good for your health

  • 24、British scientist are preparing to launch rials of a new way to fight cancer, which kills tumours(肿瘤)by infecting them with viruses.

Leonard Seymour, a professor of gene therapy at Oxford University, who has been working on the virus therapy with his colleagues will lend the trials later this year. Cancer Research UK said yesterday that it was excited by the potential of Prof Seymour’s pioneering techniques.

Prof Seymour has been working with viruses that kill cancer cells directly, while avoiding harmn to healthy tissue. Cancer-killing viruses exploit the fact that cancer cells suppress(抑制) the body’s local immune system. “If a cancer doesn’t do that, the immune system wipes it out. If you can get a virus into a tumour, viruses find them a very god place to be because there’s no immune system to stop them replicating(复制).You can regard it as the cancer’s Achilles’ heel.”

Researchers have known for some time that viruses can kill tumour cells. American scientists have previously injected viruses directly into tumours but this technique will not work if the cancer is inaccessible or has spread throughout the body.

Prof Seymour’s innovative solution is to disguise(伪装)the virus to avoid the body’s immune system, effectively allowing the viruses to do what chemotherapy drugs do—spread through the blood and reach tumours wherever they are. “What we’ve done is make chemical modifications to the virus to put a polymer(聚合物)coat around it,” he said. After the virus infect the tumour it replicates, but the copies do not have the chemical modifications. If they escape from the tumour, the copies will be quickly recognized and mopped up by the body’s immune system.

Two viruses are likely to be examined in he fist clinical trials: adenovirus, and vaccinia. For safety reasons, both will be disabled to make them less pathogenic(致病的)in the trial, but Prof Seymour said he eventually hopes to use natural viruses.

The first trials will use uncoated adenovirus and vaccinia and will be delivered locally to liver tumours. Several more years of trials will be needed, before the therapy can be considered for use in the NHS (National Health Service). Though the approach will be examined at first for cancers that do not respond to conventional treatments, Prof Seymour hopes that one day it might be applied to all cancers.

【1】The underlined part “Achilles’ heel” in Paragraph three can be replaced by ________.

    A.ideal place

    B.origin

    C.weak point

    D.advantage

【2】Which of the following statements about the virus therapy is TRUE?

D.Professor Seymour is not the first to research on using viruses to kill cancer.

【3】What is the creative part of Professor Seymour’s research work?

A.Researchers mask the viruses on the way to tumors.

B.Chemotherapy drugs are to be spread through the blood.

C.The copies have the same chemical modifications as the virus.

D.Most copies of the virus will be killed by the immune system.

【4】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A.Two natural viruses are likely to be examined in the first clinical trials.

B.A lot of work needs to be done before the virus therapy being put to use.
