  • 24、I always think my daughter Kendall is the best—that’s just what parents do. When she was only three, she sang for the people, like a little angel.

When Kendall was five, we noticed that she sometimes had a tic(面部抽搐). When the problem got worse, we look her from doctor to doctor. During the treatment, Kendall continue to sing. Surprisingly, her tics disappeared when she sang. When Kendall was sixteen. we thought she would be cured soon. However, a terrible thing happened.

At a party, Kendall jumped on a friend for a piggyback ride. He bent lower than she expected, and she jumped higher than he expected. Kendall flew over his back and landed on the floor—on her neck. She was rushed to hospital, paralyzed from the neck down. She couldn’t move. But her biggest worry wasn’t whether she would walk again, but was whether she could try out for a show called American Idol.

As the days went on, feeling on her left side returned, but she was still paralyzed on the right. We weren’t sure how much of her movement would come back. A friend brought a microphone(麦克)and put it on her bed. Every day, Kendall tried hard to pick it up. It was more important for her to pick up that microphone than a spoon or fork.

Sometimes she had to bite a toothbrush to take her mind off the pain. We all cried because of the pain we saw. But on the day, only three months after her accident, we cried full of joy when she sang, though she didn’t enter the Top 24 of American Idol.

When she was a little girl, she asked me why it was she that had tics. My heart hurt, but I told her, “Kendall, you have a pure heart, a fantastic voice, a strong mind. And you are a beautiful presence(存在)”.

  • 25、Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows:Once we have learned something, additional learning trials(尝试)increase the length of time we will remember it.

In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.

The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.

The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s future development.

【1】What is the main idea of paragraph 1?

A.People remember well what they learned in childhood.

    B.Children have a better memory than grown-ups.

C.Poem reading is a good way to learn words.

D.Stories for children are easy to remember.

【2】The author explains the law of overlearning by ________.

    A.presenting research findings

    B.setting down general rules

    C.making a comparison

    D.using examples

【3】According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is ________.

    A.a result of overlearning

    B.a special case of cramming

C.a skill to deal with math problems

D.a basic step towards advanced studies

【4】What is the author’s opinion on cramming?

A.It leads to failure in college exams.

B.It’s helpful only in a limited way.

C.It’s possible to result in poor memory.

    D.It increases students’ learning interest.

A fever, defined as an increase in body temperature over 37.3, is a common sign of illness. But recently, it has caught uncommon attention: It can be a sign of catching COVID-19. Whatever the cause, here are some things you should remember if you develop a fever.

Don’t drink certain drinks. Alcohol, soda and coffee should be avoided when you have a fever. They can cause your body to lose water when it really needs a lot of water.

Do not dress too warmly or put yourself in a place that is too hot. This can influence the body’s ability to regulate(调节) its temperature and make your fever worse.

Don’t take medicine without the doctor’s advice. Although fever-reducing medicines are very useful for treating fever, taking more than the recommended amount can lead to serious harm to your health and even death. For children, the amount should be smaller.

Don’t stay hungry. The old saying “Those with a cold should eat, while those with a fever should eat nothing” is wrong and dangerous. Fever speeds up your metabolism(新陈代谢). Hunger also reduces the body’s ability to fight off disease. So you need to get more energy from food.

Don’t forget to drink water. A fever will increase the number of breaths, causing water loss. The body also sweats more as it regulates its temperature. In addition, people usually drink less water when they have a fever, which will finally cause the body to lose water faster.

【1】Alex has a fever, his temperature must be ________.

    A.below 36.8

    B.above 36.8

    C.below 37.3

    D.above 37.3

【2】According to the passage, you can’t drink ________if you have a fever.

    A.water

    B.milk

    C.coffee

    D.juice

【3】According to paragraph 4, we know that eating too much fever-reducing medicines ________.

A.can help the patients get better soon

B.do great harm to the patients

    C.slow down the patients’ metabolism

D.bring no differences to the patients

【4】Eating enough food is important to treat fever because it can ________.

A.protect the patients from losing water

    B.provide energy for the patients

    C.speed up the patients’ metabolism

    D.regulate the patients’ temperature

【5】The article is written to tell people ________.

    A.how to deal with fever

    B.when to take medicine

    C.what makes fever worse

D.why the body loses water faster
