1、 Waste can bring a lot of problems. Although China is rich in some resources (资源) , we are short of others, for example, fresh water. It is reported that we will have no coal or oil to use in 100 years. So if we go on wasting our resources, what can we use in the future and where can we move? Think about it. I think we should say no to the students who waste things every day. Everyone should stop wasting as soon as possible.
In our everyday life, we can do many things to prevent (阻止) waste from happening, for example, turn off the water taps when we finish washing, turn off the lights when we leave the classroom, try not to order more food than we need, and so on. Little by little, everything will be changed. Waste can be stopped one day, if we do our best.

24、One day Vimala and her new friend Mary, were playing at school. Mary was a very quiet and shy girl but Vimala liked her. While jumping, Mary’s glasses fell off and broke. Just then the bell rang and they had to hurry to their science class.
“Oh dear, I’m going to be as blind as a bat. But we’d better hurry. It’s Miss Lee’s class,” said Mary.
At the start of the lesson, Miss Lee explained how to do the experiment to produce large eye crystals. Then she started to question the class. Nobody dared to give a wrong answer because Miss Lee was a very strict teacher Miss Lee held up a clamp(夹具) and said, “What do we use it for? What do we call it? All the girls looked down, while she looked at their heads for one to pick on. “Mary?” she finally asked.
Mary was sitting at the back of the class. She stood up and peered at Miss Lee, but she could not see clearly what the teacher was holding. She was nervous a bit and did not answer.
Miss Lee repeated her question. This time she spoke more slowly and there was anger in her voice.
“What is this used for?” she asked
Vimala saw storm clouds climbing up to Miss Lee’s face. She knew that the storm was about to burst on Mary, so she put up her hand. Miss Lee paid no attention to her and stared through narrowed eyes at Mary, waiting for an answer.
Mary did not know what to say. She looked to her left and right for help. Too scared to say out that she couldn’t see clearly, Mary hoped that if she kept quiet Miss Lee would ask somebody else.
Vimala guessed what was wrong, so she decided to take a risk. She jumped to her feet and said, “Excuse me. Miss Lee. Mary broke her glasses just before the lesson started. I don’t think she can see the clamp clearly.” Then she sat down, praying (祈祷) that the ceiling would not fall on her.
“Oh!” Miss Lee said, a little surprised. She had thought that Mary was refusing to answer.
Now that she understood, her anger faded away. “Thank you, Vimala.” she said Then she turned to Mary and said, “Come and look at this.”
Mary left her chair and went to the front of the class.
“It’s a clamp.” she said. “We can put it on a metal stand(支架) and use it to hold things in place.”
“Well, you got it right at last.” Miss Lee said with a brief smile. But you’d better not do any experiments until your glasses have been repaired. You can watch Vimala while she does the experiment.
The storm clouds disappeared. The smile disappeared from Miss Lee’s face and she continued with the lesson. Vimala winked at Mary who peered at her and smiled weakly.

25、Sports, drama, and all kinds of organizations keep students busy during high school. Where do they get the money to do these things? Not everyone gets it from parents. Most have to work for at least some of the money to pay for these activities. Some adults question if high school students should have jobs. I say yes, they undoubtedly should.
Some people worry that teens with after-school jobs will have difficulty finding time for schoolwork. Actually, having a job helps teens make better use of their time. Many jobs take only a couple of hours on weeknights. According to an article, 86 percent of high school students have an after-school, weekend or summer job and students who work between 10 and 20 hours per week during the school year get higher grades than those who do not work at all. Instead of considering working after school a hindrance, it should be looked at as real-world education.
Other people think that work adds too much stress(压力), which may be somewhat true, but whether having a job or not, there is always stress. Better to learn how to deal with busy schedules(日程表)in a controlled environment like high school than to be out on your own and alone in the future, experiencing stress for the first time. I personally would be worried about the teenager who has to become independent without having any experience of working.
The biggest reason teens should work is that it is a healthy way of making money. There are many things teens need to pay for and they cannot do it if they don’t have a job. Not all parents can pay for these activities. My dad told me, “Having a job is a good way to save up for things you are going to need or want to do. You get a lot more out of things if you pay for them yourself.” The sooner kids make money, the sooner they can learn how to use money wisely. If they are not allowed to work in high school, they may have a hard time in the future. Teens should, without a doubt, be allowed to work on school nights.

27、I have always been a big girl. I am comfortable with my body but there is a price to pay for being different.
In primary school. I was crazy about gymnast(体操) and was actually team captain in my final year, but I had to make up for my shortcomings. Long after the other girls had left I would still be in the school hall, going over every routine again and again without the coach around. It took months to master the ribbon(带子) and in the early days, I always got my ribbon in a terrible knot. However, I carried on and improved so much that in 2015 I was in the National Championships.
Whenever I went up in a competition, I always got the sense that the crowd did no expect much from the overweight child before them. They talked about my weight in low voices. One man even said. “That’s the ugliest leotard (紧身衣) I’ve ever seen and the elephant inside it isn’t much better!” Hearing their words, you could understand my feelings. But I just kept silent because I decided to let my ribbon do the talking. I worked harder on my ribbon and it showed.
I was the winner in National Championships that year, but that was not the best thing I got from hours of tiring practice. The best thing was the knowledge that my body can not decide who I am and should never limit what I can do. Society seems to believe that overweight people are unhappy with their weight and have little low self-confidence, so they never count much. I do not believe that. I believe I can achieve anything because I am bigger than my body.
