24、Pablo Picasso is one of the most important people of 20th century when art and art movements happened. Before the age of 50, the Spanish born artist had become the most well-known name in modern art, with the most special style and eye for artistic creation. There had been no other artists like Picasso, who had such an effect on the art world, or had a large following of fans as he did.
Pablo Picasso was born in Spain in 1881, and was raised there before going on to spend most of his adult life working as an artist in France. During the whole life, he created more than 20, 000 paintings, drawings, sculptures(雕塑) and other artistic works. He is universally famous as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain. His father Ruiz was a painter and a professor of art, and felt surprised by his son’s drawing from an early age. His mother stated at one time that his first words were to ask for a pencil. At the age of seven, Picasso began receiving formal training from his father. Because of his traditional professional training, Ruiz believed training made up copying of masterworks and drawing the human form from live models.
In 1891 at ten years old, the family moved to La Coruna where School of Fine Arts paid Ruiz to be a professor. They spent four years there where Ruiz felt his son surpassed him as an artist at the age of 13 and decided to give up painting.
When Picasso died at age 91 in April 1973, he had become one of the most famous and successful artists in history. The most special is that he was able to draw modern creation on the one hand but on the other of continuing traditional lines. He is also the most fruitful genius(天才) in the history of art. His art went over a 78-year period, in which he created 13, 500 paintings, 100, 000 prints and many other famous works.
Just like William Shakespeare on literature(文学), Picasso’s effect on art is large. No one has achieved the same degree of widespread fame(名望) or showed such unbelievable skillfulness as Pablo Picasso has in the art history. Picasso’s free spirit, his strange style made him a cause for artists to follow.

25、Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to connect our brain with computers. Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands(指令)to machines.
Recently two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne. Switzerland, showed us a small robotic wheelchair directed(指挥)by a person’s thoughts.
In the laboratory. Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand “Our brain has billions of cells(细胞). These send signals(信号)through the spinal cord(脊髓)to the muscles(肌肉)to give us the ability to move. But some injuries or other conditions can stop these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles.” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with outside world by controlling the machines with thoughts.”
The researchers designed a special cap for the user. It picks up the signals from our brain and sends them to a computer. The computer gets the signals and starts to command the wheelchair after a short while.
Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that gets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two kinds: communication, and controlling machines. One example is this wheelchair.”
He says his team has set a main goal. That is to test with real patients, so as to prove that this is such a technology they can benefit(获益)from.

26、“I don’t like my parents. They always tell me I should do this, and should not do that. It sometimes makes me angry,” said Wang Ping, a middle school student in Guangzhou. Do you have the same problem? Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were your age long ago. Why does it seem that some parents are not so friendly in their children’s eyes?
One of the biggest problems is when someone becomes a parent, he/she likes worrying about things. They worry about everything about you from the time you were born. They do a lot for you, though something would make you angry, because they care about you and worry about you. They worry about your choice of friends, food you eat, your work at school, how much sleep you get, etc. All these things are part of your life. They want you to grow up healthily and happily.
So how can you make things easier on yourself? It’s easier than you think. Just make sure your parents know what you’re doing. Get them to know your friends. Phone them if you stay somewhere else late so that your parents don’t call every hospital in the phone book looking for you. Say sorry to them when you make mistakes. Take responsibility (责任) for what you have done. Talk about your ideas with them. They may talk about theirs with you.
Most of all, try to think about why your parents do this or do that. They are still practicing being parents and need help you can give them. Someday, when you become a parent, they may be able to help you know how to get on with your children.

27、Some of the greatest problems we face today are the destruction (破坏) of our environment. Brown clouds, polluted water, endangered wild animals.., these problems seem so huge.
So my family does what we can. We take cloth bags to stores instead of using plastic bags. We walk where we don't have to drive...
But does it do any good? When I am the only one in line at the market with cloth bags, am I doing any good? Does my walking to stores make any real difference to the world?
I recently learned something about flamingos (火烈鸟) which like to get together in groups of a thousand or more. Every year, when the time comes for migration (迁徙), a few of them first take off from the lake. But none of the others seem to notice, so the small group returns. However, the next day they try again. This time few more fly along with them, but most of them still pay no attention, so they return again. They try for several times. Every time a few more birds join in but, since the thousands of others still take no notice, the great migration plan is once more stopped.
Then one day something changes. The same small group of birds once again starts flying and a small number more join in just as before, then more. Finally, they all take flight and the migration really begins. What a spectacular sight it must be—thousands of flamingos taking off into the sky at once!
A few can make a difference. Even if you're the one to take the first step, and continue trying, others will someday take notice and together we will solve even our greatest problems.
