四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   A young Jewish girl begins a diary just as World War II is about to break out in Europe. She records the details of her daily life, but more than that. Eventually, the diary comes to a heartbreaking end with the girl shot to death by the Nazis. However, it’s not the story of Anne Frank. This is Renia’s Diary, a journal that was hidden for years in a safe box. Now it’s coming to light with the help of Renia’s sister and niece.

For a long time, Elizabeth didn’t even know that her older sister Renia had kept a diary as a teenager in Poland. Then suddenly one day in the 50s, Elizabeth got the diary and started to read it. She was totally stunned and couldn’t get very far. “It was too painful to read it,” Elizabeth recalls. “I just put it in the basement and didn’t think about it.”

Alexandra, Elizabeth’s daughter, grew up knowing about the locked diary. As Alexandra got older, she was more interested in it. “If I could read this diary, maybe I’ll explore some things from the past,” she thought.

She got the diary from its hiding place. When she read it, Alexandra was shocked. “It’s the description of a wonderful girl who showed great courage in terrible times. My aunt’s world comes to life as the diary shifts between a teenage girl’s daily life and the war.”

Elizabeth and her daughter Alexandra are excited that the diary will be published. “It is a story that needs to be heard now more than ever. We should never repeat the same types of racism(种族主义) and hate that lead to violence,” Alexandra says.

  • 25、Last week, my granddaughter started kindergarten(幼儿园), and certainly I wished her success. I was saying something that is not true. What I actually wish for her is failure. I believe in the importance of failure.

Success is boring. Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do, or do something correctly the first time, which can often be a problem for the future. First-time success is usually a fluke(侥幸). First-time failure, in fact, is the natural order of things.

Failure means how we learn. I have been told of an African phrase(短语) describing a good cook as “she who has broken many bowls”. If you’ve spent enough time in the kitchen and have broken a lot of bowls, probably you know a lot about cooking. I once had a dinner with a group of cooks, and they spent time comparing knife wounds and burn scars. They knew how much their failures gave them.

My younger daughter is a dancer. She spent three years getting ready for an act. She did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change the actbut she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored; and if she was bored, she couldn’t play well. So she changed the act. She risked failure in order to feed her heart.

My granddaughter is a perfectionist. But I will also, I hope, remind her of what she learned, and how she can do whatever it is better next time. I probably won’t tell her that failure is a good thing, because that’s not a lesson you can learn when you’re five. I hope I can tell her, though, that it’s not the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning.

1What did the writer really wish for her granddaughter in the kindergarten?

    A. Success. B. Failure.     C. Kindness.   D. Care.

2The third paragraph mainly tells us   .

    A. what “a good cook” means B. a cook should often cook

    C. a cook must break many bowls D. failure means how we learn

3 Why did the younger daughter change the act?

    A. Because she didn’t do well in it.

    B. Because she was asked to change it.

    C. Because she wanted to feed her heart.

    D. Because she wanted to try a failure.

4What does the writer hope to tell the granddaughter?

    A. Failure is a good thing.

    B. She can’t fail any more.

    C. Failure is not the end of the world.

    D. Success is the end of the world.

    How to Be Safe Alone

Being alone at home or outside the house, especially if it’s a new experience, can be scary (吓人的). But don’t worry. With a few tips below, you’ll be prepared to face the situation all by yourself.

Tip 1 Keep a key on you at all times.

Keep the key with you all the time. Keep it in a safe place, such as your wallet or inner pocket. Make sure you don’t lose it. You don’t want to get locked out of the house on a day when your parents won’t be back until late. But don’t leave it outside your house (e.g. under the doormat or in the garden) — someone could find it easily and break into the house.

Tip 2 Have a list of phone numbers.

If you lose your cell phone or the battery (电池) dies, you don’t want to realize you can’t remember the number to call your dad at work. Put the phone list somewhere important, maybe where you keep your key. Besides your parents’ phone numbers, you should have at least three of others’.

Tip 3 Keep emergency (紧急) money with you.

Don’t keep too much money on you. Twenty dollars should be fine at home, but outside of the home alone, you may not want to carry more than five. It’s all about safety. Discuss with your parents how much money you should have with you.

Tip 4 Always have a backup plan

Unfortunately, things do go wrong sometimes. In such a sudden situation, not being prepared can be scary, even dangerous. Discuss with your parents and neighbors about what you should do in emergency situations that may happen. It will help you find the fastest way to get help.

【1】It’s better to keep the room key ________.

    A.outside the house

    B.in the pocket

    C.under the doormat

    D.in the garden

【2】How many phone numbers at least are you advised to keep for safety?

    A.Two.

    B.Three.

    C.Four.

    D.Five.

【3】Which of the actions may be safe at home but dangerous outside alone?

A.Have a phone list with you.

    B.Forget to call your parents.

    C.Carry 20 dollars with you.

    D.Keep room keys with you.

【4】Why do you need a backup plan?

A.Because it can get you ready for a sudden change.

B.Because it’s always too dangerous to stay outside.

C.Because the other plan will fail to work properly.

D.Because it is the fastest way for you to find your parents.

【5】The passage is probably written for ________.

    A.teachers

    B.children

    C.parents

    D.policemen

  • 27、Think back to a time in your life when you tried something new.

When I was a teenager I volunteered to pass out water at a local race. I was so excited to see all the different runners who passed by and quickly took a cup of water. Some ran past, some walked past and a few wheeled past.

I saw so many types of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it too! The next year I decided to run for the race, but I had little running practice. I just wanted to finish.

On the day of the race, it was terribly hot. After running for about 5 miles, I was thinking, “I must be crazy. Why did I do this? What was I thinking?” And at one moment, I said to myself, “I am never doing this again!”

That first 10 km race was quite an experience. I jogged(慢跑), I walked, I jogged and walked. At times, I didn’t know if I could finish.

Near the end, a 70-year-old man ran past me, very fast, and I felt a little embarrassed(尴尬的) that I was more than 50 years younger than he and I couldn’t even keep up with him. But then I realized something. He was running his race and I was running mine. How often in life do we compare(比较)ourselves to others when we really shouldn’t? I decided that I would not give up on running races, and that one day I would be one of those 70-year-old men who were still running.

As I crossed the finishing line, I was proud of myself. I didn’t regret(后悔) having such an experience.

    B.He cheered up the runners.

C.He passed out water to the runners.

【2】Why did the writer join the race?

    A.He just wanted to experience.

    B.He was crazy about running.

C.He had practiced running very hard.

D.He wanted very much to win a prize.

【3】When did a 70-year-old runner run past the writer?

A.At the first of the race.

B.When he ran for 5 miles.

C.When he ran for about 15 km.

D.Near the end of the race.

【4】How did the writer’s feeling change after running about 5 miles?

① He regretted.   ② He encouraged himself.   ③ He felt a little embarrassed.

    A.①-②-③

    B.②-①-③

    C.①-③-②

    D.②-③-①

【5】What is the best title(标题) of the passage?

    A.To be No. 1

    B.Let’s compare

    C.A volunteering job

    D.Running your own race
