24、Growing up in Tanzania, Abdulrazak Gurnah never thought of the possibility that he might one day be a writer. “I never thought about that,” he said in an interview. “It wasn’t something you could say as you were growing up, ‘I want to be a writer.’” He thought he would become “something useful, like an engineer.”
Then, in 1964, something terrible forced Gurnah, at age 18, to run away to England. But the new life was not as good as he thought. Unhappy, poor, homesick, he began to write down things about home in his diary, and then longer writings, then stories about other people. Those small thoughts, the habit of writing to understand and record his own loneliness, finally became his first novel, then nine more—works that describe the pain of colonialism(殖民) and war. “The key thing that helps the whole experience of writing for me was this idea of losing your place in the world,” he said.
On October 7, 2021, Gurnah was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, widely seen as the most famous literary award in the world. His works talked about refugees(难民) and their living conditions. These books help us learn more about differences in culture and countries.
Gurnah, now 72, is the first black writer to receive the prize since Toni Momison in 1993, and some people saw his selection(当选) as a good thing after years of European and American Nobel winners. He is the first African to win the award in more than ten years.

25、How do you like your school? Have you ever written to your headmaster to express your idea? Here are some letters written by students from different schools.
Luke, 14, from Jiangsu
I will give some suggestions about our school uniform. In our school, we students have to wear uniform every day. But the yellow and green sports kit(服装)looks really dark and old. It can’t stand for young and lively spirit. We can add some red or orange colors and make a new type of uniform. I hope our headmaster will think about it.
Danny, 14, from Zhejiang
I have two suggestions for my headmaster. First of all, I think we should have more hobby classes in science , such as plane model making class and computer programming class. 26、Nowadays more and more people care about the exploration (开采) of the natural resources, such as oil. Though there’re many kinds of resources, with the fast increase of population and the appearance of many more factories, the more we use, the fewer there will be left for the future. Oil is getting less and less year after year. It’ s said that oil can last for only 50 years. Natural gas perhaps will last about 38 years.
Oil can be used in many ways and it’s difficult to imagine what the modern world will be like without oil. But oil isn’t easy to find and get out of the earth. Men must study the rocks. When they think the rocks in a certain place may have oil, a metal tower is built. A machine in the tower cuts a hole down into the ground. At the same time, a steel pipe is pushed down to stop the sides from falling in and to keep out water. At last if the men are right, usually the oil rushes up the sides with great force by the pressure of the gas in the top of the rock, and it rushes high into the air. If the oil catches a light, there will be a terrible fire. So a kind of cover is fixed on the top of the pipe, and the oil can run out through taps.
If we make a well near the middle of the oil field, we can also get gas. Such gas is sent through pipes to towns far away and used in houses and factories like coal gas.
Today oil is under pressure as never before. The price of oil keeps rising all the time. In many countries, the governments encourage people to save oil as much as possible.

27、 Students decide to take a job while being in university because of two reasons: on the one hand, they need money; on the other hand, they want to experience something new and they want to see what working means. It is a good opportunity (机会) to know about the society and realize the importance of co-working with others.
But is it good to take a job while you are a university student? There are both advantages and disadvantages if we were to answer this question. If we were to think about the advantages, we could mention the ones we have just discussed. Having a job at an early age helps us gain (获得) experience, which will be very useful to our later life. We may become financially independent (经济独立) and don't need to ask our parents for money each time we want to go downtown with our friends, or spend the holiday at the seaside or in the mountains.
However, students who take a job might have problems in spending enough time on their study. If they work during the day, they may have to be absent from their classes, and if they work at night, they will feel tired the next day. They may choose to stay at home resting. What's worse, some students may even get bored with studying.
Well, this fact happens every now and then, but there are cases (情况) when well-prepared students take a part-time job but at the same time they make time for studying, too. And they have good results. Their case is a good example to follow among the students who decide to work while being in university. Anyway, we need to keep in mind that study is the most important job for a student.
