Those who do not believe in a free lunch can now eat their words because it is possible to get things for free in Singapore without any conditions attached. Let me introduce you to some tips on where and how to gain some free presents, all without even touching your wallet.
Food
Go search for food festivals and fairs. These food sellers usually put out a lot of small samples for all to try. Famous ones include the Singapore Food Festival held annually in the month of July at various locations including the Takashimaya Square and Plaza Singapura.
Haircuts
There are well-known hair salons every month that require hair models for apprentices(学徒) to exercise their skills or for their hair stylists(发型师) to experiment with new styles. Unbelievable as it might sound, most people come out of this experience satisfied and addicted to more of such deals. Free Internet
Most hotels offer free wifi. There are also many cafes in Singapore that offer free wireless surfing. However, order a coffee to avoid unfriendly stares from the staff. Popular spots include the McDonald’s, Starbucks and
Cafe Galilee outlets throughout our island. Free City Tour If you are a traveler in Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board has arranged for you to enjoy a free two-hour city tour that offers you a choice to enjoy a Sentosa Island tour or a small-boat experience.

27、Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good , most would admit(承认)that their spoken English is poor . Whenever I speak to a Chinese student , they always say , “ My spoken English is poor .” However , their spoken English does not have to remain “poor” ! I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English .
First , they fail to find suitable(适合的)words to express themselves due to a limited(有限的) vocabulary . Obviously the better answer is to expand(扩大)their vocabulary . However , you can speak with a limited vocabulary , if your attitude is positive . Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know .
Second , they’re afraid of making mistakes . Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous . Yet students should remember that their goal should be fluency not accuracy(准确性) . Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly . However in speaking your aim is fluency . You want to get your message across , to talk to someone in English , as quickly and as well as you can , even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense , but it doesn’t matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for (体谅)any mistakes he hears .
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening . You have one mouth but two ears ! All that hearing was necessary for you to start speaking .
Fourth , most Chinese students are reactive(应式的)than proactive (积极主动的)language learners .Instead of actively seeking out opportunities(机会)to improve their spoken English , they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor . If you have this proactive outlook(看法), then you will see English opportunities wherever you go .
If you don’t use your English beyond the classroom , you’ll forget what English you know .
Remember :use it or lose it ! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more .
【1】What can be inferred from the third paragraph ?
A. Don’t be fluent . Just be accurate !
B. Don’t be nervous , don’t be shy . Just write !
C. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes .Just speak !
D. Don’t be shy,don’t be fluent . Just listen and write !
【2】To improve their spoken English , students should do the following things EXCEPT _________
A. try their best to enrich their vocabulary
B. try to avoid being afraid of making mistakes
C. pay more attention to listening before opening mouth
D. try to be as reactive as possible in learning English
【3】What is the main idea of the last paragraph ?

28、Seven tips to good table manners
Whether it’s dinner at a friend’s house or a business meeting over lunch, we judge people based on their table manners. But what can you do if your kids do not behave themselves at the dinner tables? The following are seven tips to set your children on the road to good table manners:
●Look for the good. Instead of pointing out(指出) all the things your children do wrong, point out what they do right. Please say, for example, “ I am so proud of yu. It was wonderful the way you served yourself.”
●Don’t turn dinner into an unpleasant “lecture time”. That will turn kids off not only manners, but dinner, and you, too.
●Check your own example. Don’t show up for dinner in just your underwear (内衣) unless you want your kids to do the same.
●Don’t always consider your kids lazy and dirty ones. Instead, point out the behavior in a tender way. For example: “It’s a good idea to unfold your napkin, so if food falls you won’t dirty your clothes.”
●Teach your kids good manners in the form of a game. One night a week, try to have a formal dinner. Try dressing up, serve a special meal, and expect more formal manners. That will help improve their sense ( 意识) of manners.
● Make kids understand part of the tradition. Invite guests over and let kids help serve them. This helps them indirectly learn about table manners.
●Try dining out once in a while. Fast food restaurants aren’t counted(算在内). Try a nice restaurant and let kids order their own food, pay the bill and give the tip.

29、Diwali(Deepavali)is a festival of lights observed in October or November each year in Canada. During the festival, various community groups, businesses, schools and associations celebrate it in different ways. Some companies have Diwali dinners and some communities organize gatherings that feature firework displays, dances, street lighting, and plays.
Many women wear fine jewelry and silk outfits to celebrate Diwali. Some women and girls use Mehendi, a dye decoration which can last a limited time, on their palms, and then they will finally get colorful hand paintings. Many homes that celebrate Diwali have various types of sweets, salty and spiced food as well as Diwali herbs (香料). Various lights, candles and sparklers are lit inside and outside homes, particularly in courtyards, on Diwali. Diwali is not a nationwide public holiday in Canada but it is a prevalent festival celebrated in many towns and cities. There may be traffic jams and parking places may be full in areas where events are held to celebrate Diwali. Some Indian businesses may close early on Diwali.
Diwali is called the "Festival of Lights" and is celebrated to honor Rama, a hero who once fought and won a battle against the demons(恶魔). In the past, people lit their houses to celebrate his victory over demons(light over darkness). At the same time, every household did careful and complete cleaning at home in advance. It is believed that the goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi travels around the Earth on this day and enters the house that is pure, clean, and bright.
Diwali celebrations may vary in different communities but its spiritual meaning is generally "the awareness of the inner light". As the word “Deepavali” means “a row or cluster of light”, the festival symbolizes the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness.
