四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   We like to believe that before we make a decision, most of the time, we take time to consider all the facts carefully. However, Experts believe that only 5% of our decisions are based on a rational (理性的)thought process. So, what influences our decision-making process?

We often leave decision-making to our instincts(本能).Scientists have found out that if we had the choice, we like to avoid pain rather than get something. In fact, we're twice as happy when we try to avoid a bad situation than when we experience a good one. This is why when companies send ads, they use phrases like "How to avoid...", "Don't miss out!", etc.

There are also physical reasons that affect our decision-making. Psychologist (心理学家)John Bargh carried on an experiment where people were asked what they thought of a fictional person, while holding a cold or a hot cup of coffee. Those holding the hot cup believed the person to be warmer and more sociable than those holding the cold cup. So, when temperatures rise, the more likely we are to believe in strangers.

Stress is another thing which affects our decisions. Different situations are more or less stressful for different people. Researchers have found, though, that women are more conservative (保守的)about decisions when stressed, while men are to make riskier choices.

It may come as a surprise but every day from the minute we get up, we have to make countless decisions, like what to wear, what coffee to have and so on. Each choice makes our brain a little bit more tired, and this affects our decision-making. That's why important people, like presidents wearing the same three suits all the time, want to limit the small choices and spend more brain power (力量)on the bigger ones.

1Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

    A. B. C. D.

2What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.Every day we have to make lots of big decisions.

B.People sometimes judge a person by what he wears.

C.What people wear influences their decision making.

D.Making fewer decisions helps to save brain power.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.We make most of the decisions after our careful thinking.

B.People are likely to be happier to avoid something bad.

C.As the temperature is low, we are likely to believe others

D.People usually have risky decisions under heavy pressure.

4The purpose of the passage is to__________.

A.tell us what influences decision-making B.advise people to make rational decisions

C.warn people not to make risky decisions D.show disadvantages of rational decisions

  • 25、Many of the things we use every day were first made or invented by someone who had a good idea. You might be surprised to know that many of those inventors were kids.

One kid inventor was Frank Epperson. He created a treat when he was only eleven. He left his drink of juice, with the stirring stick in it, outside on a cold night. The next morning, he found that the stick froze(结冰) inside the drink. Eighteen years later, Frank Epperson applied(申请) for a patent(专利) for it and began producing different flavors(味道) of this frozen treat. He called this treat the Ep-sicle and then his children convinced(说服) him to rename it the popsicle. Popsicles became one of the best summer treats.

Sometimes, kids invent things when they see a problem that they think they can solve. Becky Schroeder invented something that worked like a lighted clipboard(带夹写字板) when she was only ten. She did homework in the family car in the early evening and she wanted to find a way to see and write in the dark. She tried and found a special paint which glowed(发出微弱的光) strongly enough for her to see to write. Today many people still use the glowing backgrounds, including doctors and astronauts.

Chelsea Lanmon created the pocket diaper(尿布) in 1994 at the age of eight. She thought of creating the pocket diaper when she was helping her mother with her baby brother. Her invention included a diaper, a powder puff(粉扑), and a baby wipe(纸巾).

Other kids have invented useful and fun things such as board games, crayon holders and earmuffs. They all show that when it comes to creativity, being a kid is no drawback(不利条件)!

【1】What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about? ________

A.Why Frank Epperson produced many flavors of popsicles.

B.Why Frank Epperson wanted to invent a treat at the age of eleven.

C.How Frank Epperson got a patent for his invention and produced it.

B.Becky Schroeder’s idea of lighted clipboards can be used in many areas

C.it was difficult for Becky Schroeder to invent a special glowing paint

D.Chelsea Lanmon’s mother advised her to create the pocket diaper

【3】What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? ________

A.To suggest possible ways to be inventors as kids.

B.To explain the reasons for kids’ inventions.

C.To show inventions are important for kids.

D.To tell kids can make inventions as well.

  • 26、   Do you feel bored on your ordinary school campus? Then design oneself! Recently, students at Sacajawea Middle School, US, designed a “School of the Future”.

These students were taking part in the “School Next Design” national competition. Some of their designs won the favor judges (评委) with he help of Michigan State University (MSU) students and entered the final sound.

“Three eighth - grader teams from Sacajawea Middle School, here in Bozeman, need to come up with their idea of school of the future,”said MSU architecture (建筑学) student Jennisse Schule.

Lots of ideas came from the students. Some wanted to build a planetarium (天文馆), some designed a movie theater. And eighth - graders Heather, Jon and Mitchell would like to have athletic buildings at their school. And they wanted lots!

“So we have got our gym over here. It is a big facility (设备). It has got a weight room, an aerobics (有氧健身) room, a gym, a track and them some turf (草皮) for soccer and football,” said Mitchell.

But of course, designing a building is not easy for some eight - graders. They had to learn architecture terms, the materials they needed to use and how to put the models together on a computer. Also, they needed to make a report, videos and an essay.

Like Heather said, it isn’ t just about building. “It’s about community and how someone should feel and making everything a better place, a whole town or neighborhood.”

  • 27、The greatest wonders of the ancient world are usually hard to miss. For example, you can’t walk past Egypt’s pyramids without noticing them. They’re right in your face. But not the Nazca Lines in southern Peru.

These ancient drawings don’t rise before you on huge stones. They’re geoglyphs. They’re seen in the desert sands. There are hundreds of them. Some are so large that the best way to see them is from the window of a plane. That’s how thousands of visitors see them each year.

Yet these wonders weren’t noticed for nearly 1,500 years. A researcher first found some geoglyphs in Nazca (the Nazca Lines) in 1927. But nearly 150 geoglyphs weren’t discovered until many years later. It took technology such as drones (无人机) to find them.

Researchers still have many questions about the geoglyphs. And the answers are unclear. Here’s what we do know: The area’s pre-Incan Nazca people created the geoglyphs. This was between 500 BCE and 500 CE. How did they make them? By moving away some of the dark rocks that covered the ground. This showed the lighter-colored desert sand below.

Many of the Nazca Lines show the natural world, like animals and plants. And then there are some that aren’t from nature. One example was found in 2019. It’s of a strange creature (创造物) with many eyes and mouths. Researchers say this shows that the Nazca people may have had a taste for the magical.

So why were the geoglyphs created in the first place? Researchers think they may have been part of rituals (仪式) for rain and crops. Certain geoglyphs may have shown where the rituals were being held. Others could have led travelers to those places.

Then again, these are all guesses. Only one thing is clear: The Nazcas found a way to draw lasting lines in the always-changing sands of time.

【1】What does the underlined word “geoglyphs” mean in the text?

    A.Wall paintings.

    B.Oil paintings.

    C.Ground drawings.

    D.Cartoon drawings.

【2】The writer uses Paragraph 5 mostly to ________.

A.introduce the rituals of the Nazca people

B.say that finding the lines was not very easy

C.show what some of the Nazca Lines look like

D.explain the reason for making the strange lines

【3】Which of the following happened last?

A.The Nazca people created drawings in the desert sand in Peru.

B.Some Nazca Lines weren’t noticed in Peru for nearly 1,500 years.

C.A researcher found groups of lines drawn on the desert floor in Nazca.

D.A geoglyph of a strange creature with many eyes and mouths was found.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The Nazca Lines were found by a researcher in 1927.

B.The Nazca Lines are pictures made in the sands of Peru.

C.The Nazca Lines were made between 500 BCE and 500 CE.

D.The Nazca Lines show a creature with many mouths and eyes.
