25、Colorblindness affects 350 million people worldwide. It is more common in men, with 8% of the male population having poor color vision. Here’s good news for such people.
A study has found that special glasses can help colorblind people see the difference between red and green—even when they are not wearing them.
The study by the University of California’s Davis Eye Center with France’s INSERM Stem Cell(干细胞) and Brain Research Institute(研究所) found that EnChroma glasses can help people better recognize the difference between colors.
The research, which was published in Current Biology(《当代生物学》), had volunteers wear either EnChroma glasses or placebo glasses. The volunteers kept a diary for two weeks, including days they weren’t wearing glasses. It was found that those wearing EnChroma glasses could better tell the difference between red and green. It was also found that there were lasting effects when the glasses were removed, although the study couldn’t say how long the effects last for.
Alex Zbylut was one of the volunteers in the study. He originally had placebo glasses before trying EnChroma glasses. “I had no idea how colorful the world is. And I feel these glasses can help colorblind people better see colors and enjoy the world,” Zbylut said.
EnChroma glasses were discovered by Don McPherson who is a glass scientist and EnChroma’s co-founder. He created special glasses for eye doctors to wear when performing laser(激光) eye surgery(外科手术). He started wearing the glasses as sunglasses and a colorblind friend asked to borrow them. His friend found that he could see colors for the first time. That led to McPherson and EnChroma’s CEO, Andy Schmeder, turning their attention to researching glasses to help people who were colorblind.

26、 A primary school bus driver stopped the bus at a gas station in Ohio because he had to use the bathroom. Instead of turning off the engine (引擎) and taking the key with him, the driver left the bus running. And he forgot to set the brake (制动器) because he was in a hurry. “It was cold outside, and I didn’t want the kids to get cold while I was using the bathroom,” he told a police officer.
The bus slowly started moving away from the gas station. As the bus picked up speed, the kids began shouting and crying. Ten-year-old Jake ran forward to the driver’s seat and held the steering wheel (方向盘). He pressed hard on the brake pedal (踏板) and managed to stop the bus as it came nearer to a river bed. Jake turned off the engine at last. After the police arrived at the scene, they praised Jake for his great effort.
“That is one cool kid,” said the police officer. “I told him he would make a great police officer when he grew up.”
Jake wasn't impressed with what he had done."Stopping the bus," he said,"was easy compared to playing Grand Theft Auto III," his favorite action video game. The bus driver was taken to the police station. He was at first charged with "leaving a child alone while the motor is running." The lawyer said he hoped to upgrade the charge because of the number of children (twenty) on the bus.
“Whatever he is charged with,” the police officer said, “I will see that he never drives a bus again.”

27、You have just finished eating an apple while on a camp. There aren’t any rubbish bins around; what do you do with the apple core (核)? If you answered “throw it in the grass” because you thought fruit would not have a bad influence on nature, you are wrong.
According to the scientists, decomposition (分解) of fruit litter takes much longer time than you imagine. Some of these “natural” food can take years to decompose depending on the environment they are in!
When animals start to get their food from people, they may stop looking for their own food in nature. This is very dangerous because animals need different foods to stay healthy. Food waste also draws animals to go to areas where there are a lot of people. And when food is thrown out of a car window, animals may develop the habit of searching roadsides for food, which increases the chances of their being hit by a car.
In fact, apples, bananas and oranges are not from wild forests. If they are eaten by wild animals, they will probably cause the animals to get sick. Seeds (种子) of these fruit or vegetables that end up on the ground could grow into an exotic plant there. It’s not good to the local environment. And then, of course, nobody wants to see somebody else’ s fruit litter, which has already gone bad, while enjoying the beautiful outdoors.
So, no litter is safe litter, not even an apple core.

29、“Mommy, look!” cried my daughter, Darla, pointing to a chicken hawk in the air.
“Uh huh,” I answered, driving, lost in thought about the timetable of my day.
filled her face.
“What’s the matter, sweetheart?” I asked.
“Nothing,” my seven-year-old daughter said. The moment was gone.
Dinner, baths and phone calls the hours until bedtime.
“Come on, Darla, time for bed!” She raced past me up the stairs. Tired, I kissed her and tucked her in.
“Mom, I forgot to give you something!” she said.
“Give it to me in the morning.” I said. My was gone. I could hardly stay cool.
“You won’t have time in the morning!” she talked back quickly.
“I’ll take time,” I answered. Sometimes no matter how hard I tried, time was never enough.
She wasn’t ready to up yet. “No, you won’t! It will be just like today when I told you to look at the chicken hawk. You didn’t listen to what I said.”
I was too tired to argue; she hit too to the truth. “Good night!” I shut her door in anger.
Later though, her gray-blue eyes filled my vision as I thought about how little time we really had until she was grown and gone. My husband asked me what was going on and I told him.
“Maybe she was not asleep yet. Why don’t you ?” he said.
I followed his advice, it was my own idea. I opened her door gently. In Darla’s hand I could see her paper all crumpled (弄皱的) up. She had torn into small pieces a big red heart with a poem she had written titled, “Why I Love My Mother?”
Why I Love My Mother
Although you’re busy, and you work so hard,
You always take time to play with me,
I love you Mommy,
Because I am the biggest part of your busy day!
Tears filled my eyes. When I softly touched her face, she awakened from a dreamless sleep and asked, “Why are you , Mommy?”
“You ARE the most important part of my busy day!”
She smiled and then went back to sleep, not really understanding how strongly I what I said.
