四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、As teachers, we often love to encourage our students to try new things at a young age. However, I think this is a huge mistake—learning new things at any age is important and it can help us become better.

Take myself as an example. I didn’t start playing ice hockey (冰球) until my early 40s. My son is a big sports fan and he often asked me to take him to watch games between the big teams. Gradually (逐渐地) I fell in love with the sport, I decided to give it a try.

To be honest, it is the hardest sport for me. There was so much to learn. I needed to learn how to pass and shoot. I saw a lot of players get on file ice and pick it up quickly and easily. But I was an exception (例外). I was so terrible at skating, though it took me a really long time.

Learning hockey has also helped me be a better teacher in some way. Being bad at hockey helps me understand those students in my class who have difficulty in learning English. I’m not stupid—it just takes me longer time to learn and practise a skill than others. Some students are like this, too—they might need to hear an explanation (解释) three to four times or need a few more days of practice.

It’s good to learn new things, whether they come easily to you or with more difficulty. It won’t be late to start anything at any time.

【1】The huge mistake in Paragraph 1 refers to (指的是) ________.

    A.learning sports with children

B.playing ice hockey at a young age

    C.keeping students trying new things

D.stopping learning new things because of age

【2】What did the writer think of the ice hockey at first?

    A.Easy.

    B.Boring.

    C.Difficult.

    D.Exciting.

【3】The writer could be a(n) ________ teacher at school.

    A.art

    B.P.E.

    C.music

    D.English

【4】What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?

A.To explain some rules of playing ice hockey.

B.To encourage people to try new things.

C.To call on people to take exercise.

D.To teach how to learn English.

  • 27、I used to teach in public schools. After several years of teaching, what struck me was that IQ was not the only difference between my best and my smartest kids. Some of my strongest performers didn’t have super IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren’t doing so well. If doing well in school and in life depends on much more than IQ, then what is it?

I left the classroom and become a psychologist (心理学家). I stared studying kids and adults in all kinds of challenging conditions, and in every study my question was: Who is successful here and why?

We went to West Point Military Academy. We tried to predict which cadets (军校生) would stay in military training and which would drop out. We went to the National Spelling Bee and tried to predict which children would make the farthest progress in competition. We studied new teachers working in really tough neighborhoods, asking which teachers were still going to be there at the end of the school year.

In all those very different contexts, one characteristic stood out. It wasn’t social intelligence, or good looks, or physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. It was grit (毅力).

Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Grit is having patience. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the months, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon not a dash.

Grit also matters in school, especially for kids at risk of dropping out. I asked thousands of high school juniors to take grit questionnaires and then waited around more than a year to see who would graduate. It turns out that grittier kids were more likely to graduate.

However, we still know little about building grit. Perhaps that’s the work that stands before us. We need to take our best ideas and test them. We need to be gritty about getting our kids grit.

【1】According to paragraph one, what did the speaker learn from her years of teaching?

A.Teaching was less interesting than doing research.

B.Education was more challenging than she expected.

C.Students’ success didn’t necessarily relate to their IQs.

D.Students’ performances depended on their IQs.

    【2】What does having grit require?

A.Social intelligence, good looks and IQ.

B.Good looks, physical health and IQ.

C.Running a marathon and dreaming big.

    D.Passion, perseverance and patience.

【3】The speaker’s studies show that grit would help ________.

A.a cadet drop out military training

B.a competitor give up in advance

C.a new teacher find an easy job

    D.a high school junior graduate

【4】The underlined word in paragraph fourth probably refers to ________.

    B.words

    C.backgrounds

    D.characters

D.encourage students to have the grit for their future lives
