24、 To eat only a vegan (素食的) diet might sound difficult, especially with many popular dishes containing meat or other animal products. Yet in 2017, veganism was described as "the fastest-growing lifestyle movement " in the UK, according to BBC news.
A study by a UK market research organization, suggests that over 542,000 Brits went vegan during the previous 10 years, an increase of 360%. And the main force behind this increase was those aged 15—34 years old—42% of recent vegans fall under that age range.
So why exactly has veganism (素食主义) become so popular among young Brits?
One reason could be that many young people want to protect the environment, eating less meat is known to be beneficial to the environment. Global meat industry is believed to cause 18% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions (排放), even more than that of all the world's cars, trains and planes combined. Another reason is that many of today's young people believe that it's wrong to kill animals to be used as food.
Jess Murray, 22, a student at University College London, said that he chose to become vegan after realizing that eating animals is a choice that people make, rather than something that we need to do to survive. "Becoming vegan was an ethical (道德的) decision," he told the Guardian.
Social media is also believed to have given rise to the increase in veganism.
Platforms such as Facebook allow young vegans to connect with each other much easier, while others such as Instagram have led to the creation of "vegan celebrities (名人)", who share lips on vegan lifestyles.
Despite the rising of veganism, Laura Wyness, an expert in diet and nutrition, said that meat is very important for people's health. "A strict vegan diet makes it difficult to get some minerais and vitamins that your body needs," Wyness told BBC news.
However, veganism doesn't seem to become less popular. "It feels more like this is something that is sticking." said an expert of the Vegan Society, a UK charity that encourages veganism.

26、You might not think much about where your garbage goes. But now you might want to know. On July 1, Shanghai introduced a new garbage-sorting policy (垃圾分类政策). People there need to put different kinds of garbage into different bins (垃圾桶). Other cities in China will do the same soon.
Garbage sorting is a big problem because there is too much garbage these days. It is bad for our home—the earth. In fact, we can make use of some garbage again. But first, we need to sort it.
For example, if you put an old battery (电池) into the “ harmful waste” bin, people can use it to make new batteries. But if you don’t, the battery will end up somewhere else. Then, it will pollute the environment.
Garbage sorting and recycling around the world
Germany: There are big machines in supermarkets. You can put bottles in the machines and get money back.
Japan: A truck playing music comes to people’s doors to pick up their garbage. There are eight or more kinds of garbage. If you sort any of them wrong, you will get a notice on your door.
Indonesia: People can take buses for free if they give plastic bottles to bus stations. An-hour bus ride costs three large bottles.
Four kinds of garbage in Shanghai
Recyclable garbage includes paper, books, plastic items and glass bottles. Harmful garbage includes lamps, batteries and other things with harmful chemicals (化学品). 27、Reading is the key to school success and, like any skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity (自动性)”.
A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase (短语). With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about the meaning of words, so he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount (数量) of time a child spends reading , not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable (适合) for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.
