25、The year of the Dragon will begin on February 10, 2024. The Dragon is the fifth sign of the Chinese Zodiac (生肖). Dragons are not real animals. Chinese dragons can fly in the sky or swim in the sea. In stories, dragons rule over water, rainfall, wind and flood.
The Chinese dragon is a symbol of strength and good luck. The emperors of ancient China loved dragons. Their clothes were covered with pictures of yellow dragons. The dragon is very important in Chinese culture. We Chinese people are proud to call ourselves “the descendants (传人) of the dragon”. A number of Chinese sayings refer to dragons. For example, “Hoping one’s child will become a dragon”, which means hoping he or she will be successful.
Unlike in China, dragons are seen differently in Western countries. Western dragons often look like dinosaurs. They breathe fire and catch people. It is a common fairy tale about a man who becomes a hero after killing a dragon and saving a princess. In the English movie How to Train Your Dragon (《 驯龙记》), a little boy becomes much braver by killing some bad dragons. In one of the Harry Potter stories, Harry Potter has to fight against a scary dragon and get back the golden egg from its nest.
Because of this, some Chinese experts have suggested changing the English word “Dragon” into its pinyin “Long”. They believe the name “Dragon” makes Western people think badly about China. But some don’t agree. They think Chinese people can look after their own culture. Many Western people already know the differences between Chinese dragons and Western ones.
【1】Which power of dragons is NOT mentioned in Chinese stories?
A.They can fly in the sky.
B.They can swim in the sea.
C.They can rule water and wind.
D.They can catch and eat people.
【2】What does the sentence “Hoping one’s child will become a dragon” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese?
A.龙马精神
B.龙飞凤舞
C.望子成龙
D.龙腾虎跃
【3】Who can be called as “a hero” in Western fairy tales?
A.A man who can train a dog.
B.A man who can get an egg.
C.A man who can breathe fire.
D.A man who can kill a dragon.
【4】According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.There are many Chinese sayings about dragons.
B.The Dragon is the first sign of the Chinese Zodiac.
C.Harry Potter becomes much braver by killing some bad dragons.
D.Emperors in China liked wearing clothes with red dragon pictures.
【5】Why do Chinese experts suggest changing “Dragon” into Chinese pinyin “Long”?
A.Because Chinese are proud of their own pinyin.
B.Because dragon makes Western people think highly of China.
C.Because Western people know nothing about Chinese culture.
D.Because “Dragon” in Western countries doesn’t carry the same cultural meanings as in China.
26、Just as our bodies produce waste every day, which is why we need to shower and use the toilet, our brains produce waste proteins (蛋白质). But how can our brains “shower” themselves?
A 2013 study found the answer, Researchers studied the brains of mice and discovered that they cleaned themselves while sleeping. A kind of fluid (液体) in the brain was found to increase during sleep, washing away waste proteins that had been building up in waking hours.
“This study shows that the brain has different functional states (功能状态) when asleep and when awake.” Maiken Nedergaard. the lead researcher, told NBC News. It also explains why we can’t seem to think clearly after a sleepless night while a good night’s sleep makes us smarter the next day.
Now a new study digs a little deeper into our brains’ self-cleaning process. Researchers watched the brain waves (波动) of 13 healthy adults who were sleeping. They found every 20 seconds, with blood going out of the brain, plenty of fluid comes in and “clean”. This only happens when we’re in deep sleep with slow brain waves.
It’s known that slow-wave sleep can make our memories better. So it allows researchers to explain some diseases. For example, people with Alzheimer’s (阿尔兹海默症) often have fewer and weaker slow brain waves. That’s only because they don’t have enough deep sleep and their brains are not clean.
Maybe the most important message is we really need to sleep to keep a healthy brain. Because it has an activity like housecleaning.

27、Have you ever thought of such questions as “Why do I have to study math?”or “I am not interested in history at all. My dream is to be an actor. Should I give up history?”
Maybe you are right. After you leave school, it’s not necessary for you to understand everything. But please remember that at school, besides getting knowledge, you should pay attention to some other important things.
First, try to find what you are most interested in. At school, you study many subjects. Try to find what you like and what you don’t like. This may be helpful to you in the future.
Second, maybe you don’t like math and you want to drop it. But the logical thinking ability from math can help you solve some problems. At school, you should practice your brain by thinking.
Third, you should believe in yourself. Maybe you learn French at school, but you don’t need to speak French at all. But learning French can prove that you have the ability of learning languages. Suppose you go to France one day and find a good job well. At school I learned French well, and now I must be able to learn German. But if you have no confidence, what will happen?
Try to challenge yourself as often as possible. I think many of us like playing computer games. When we fail in a game, we always want to try it again. Why? Because it is hard for us to get the highest mark. If we want to challenge ourselves, we must face more difficult things and make greater progress.
