If 2019 is really “the year we woke up to climate change”, then the following years should be the time we start actually doing something about it. Because we are nearly out of time. We can’t afford to wait any longer to take action. 1. Take the following suggestions seriously to make a change.
Do shopping wisely. Instead of buying many new clothes, wear what is already in your closet(衣柜). After all, most clothes are made of materials that are hard to deal with when they become waste. 2. The fewer clothes you buy, the more energy you will save. Be a smart shopper, buy less and match what you have owned more.
3. 把钱花在更有意义的东西上。 There are many different kinds of organizations aiming to protect the environment .Donate(捐赠)money to an organization to help it do something practical to the environment. It is meaningful though the money may not be too much. It shows your care for the world.
Use less plastics. Avoiding using plastics seems impossible, but you can use them less. 4. Taking reusable bags instead of buying plastic bags helps a lot. Replacing plastic cups with reusable water bottles is also a good idea. It’s useful to bring your own takeout containers(容器)to restaurants for leftovers as well.
Fall in love with your own world. When you love something, you want to protect it. Pay attention to the beautiful nature around you, 5. 这样你才能享受到世界的美。

24、A Book Review—The Snake-Stone by Berlie Doherty
The setting: Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside) including remote English villages.
The theme: The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero(主人公) was separated at an early age. It also talks about love, getting on with others, being persistent(坚持不懈的) and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James, swimming coach says to him, “You are not like a kid following instructions any more. You are diving like a young man who knows where he is going.”
The characters: James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents(养父母). Yet he also has the qualities to take himself on a long journey to find his birth mother. The other characters in The Snake Stone, James’s parents, his diving coach, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured realistically.
The turning point: The turning point in the story comes while James’s foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity(辨认) of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil(化石), “the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on which she had written: “Take good care of Sammie.” It was written on a letter with parts of an address still there.
The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. He finally meets his mother, Anne, and comes to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of completeness. As a journey of self-discovery, The Snake Stone also provides its readers with a happy ending. Its hero says, on returning to his foster parents, “I was home.”

26、According to a new survey, students’ safety has become a big problem. Nearly 50% of the students say they are worried about robbery (抢劫) on the way to and from school. Now in main big cities in China, some schools have taught an unusual lesson: self-protection. Students like this lesson because there are no exams or boring things. And they can learn how to save lives and know how to stop danger before it really happens. A teacher named Chen Haoyu gives young students advice on how to deal with danger.
If you are robbed, please keep calm. If you cannot cry for help or run away, give the robber your money. Try to remember what the robber looks like and tell the police later.
If a car hits you, you should remember the car number. If it is a bicycle, try to call your parents before you let the rider go. This is because you don’t know how seriously you are hurt.
If it is raining hard and there is lighting, don’t stay in high places and stay away from tall trees.
When there is a fire, get away as fast as you can. Put wet things on your body and try to find an exit. Do not use the lift.
If you see that someone is drowning (溺水) but you can’t swim, don’t get into the water. Cry out for help.
