24、It’s not easy to be a scientist’s son. Everybody expects you to be special or perfect.
Well, to be honest, I often dream about being some kind of hero or doing something special—like saving a child from a burning building or discovering a new star. I was daydreaming at school one morning when my teacher said there would be a Mother’s Day writing competition for the whole school “I hope we have a winner right here in my class.”
When I got home, I started to think about what to write. “My mother is a scientist.” N0, I wouldn’t start like that. That was the way others saw her. How did I see my mother? Hmm, I saw her sitting with me in the dark when I had a terrible dream. I remembered how she hugged me for hours when my dog Spotty was killed by a car. Yes, these were the things I was going to write. To me, she wasn’t just a world—famous scientist. She was my mom.
My parents and I went to school Thursday night. The third prize was announced(宣布) and it was not me. The second prize was announced. It was me!
I went up to the stage and read what I had written, “My mother’s son”. When I finished, the people stood up and cheered. Tears were running down my mother’s face. I saw my father blowing his nose. He cleared his throat and put his hand on my shoulder, “Son, this is the proudest moment of my life.’’
It was the proudest moment of my life, too. Maybe I’ll never be a great hero or win a Nobel Prize, but it was enough just to be my mother’s son.
根据短文内容,判断下列句子是否正确,对的涂(A),错的涂(B)。
【1】Students were asked to write about their mothers at the writing competition.
【2】The result was announced on Thursday night.
【3】The writer wrote things on his mother’s work.
【4】The son won the first prize at the competition.
【5】The writer felt tired to be a scientist’s son.
25、Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the incident of tragedy involving murders of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests.
One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, as the losers disagreed with the final decisions. They believed that one of their goals should have been allowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was in great anger when he said: “This isn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension(停赛) of the team for at least three years.
The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable(有争议的) end to their contest. The game had ended in disorder. It was thought at first that the United States had won by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the US had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury (评审委员会) debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.
Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism (爱国主义).
【1】According to the author, recent Olympic Games have ____.
A. created goodwill between the nations
B. hardly showed any international friendship
C. caused only false national pride
D. led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred

A. There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation.
B. His team would no longer take part in international games.

D. The Federation should be ended.
【3】 The basketball example implied that().
A. too much patriotism was displayed in the incident
B. the announcement to make the match last longer was wrong
C. the appeal jury was too hesitant in making the decision
D. The American team was right in receiving the silver medals
【4】Which statement best summarizes this passage?
A. The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.
B. Different teams often have disputes when fighting for the first place.
C. Any team that has disrespectful behavior should be suspended.
D. Athletes should compete as individuals.

27、 Ray’s wedding (婚礼) was successful. Everyone seemed to have had a good time. All evening, no one looked after the gift table. Who would steal anything, Ray thought. But his best friend Aaron didn’t think so. He walked away regularly from other guests to check on the gift table, making sure no one suspicious (可疑的) was hanging around it.
Ray and Julia went on a three-week honeymoon right after the wedding. When they got back, they opened all the gifts and sent out thank you notes. But there was one problem. A married couple, Walt and Marry, had given nothing. This surprised Julia. Ray didn’t care if they hadn’t given a gift. He just needed to know whether to send a thank you note. Ray called Aaron.
Aaron asked Ray if he had looked everywhere for Walt’s gift. Had he called up the wedding site to see if anything had been left behind? Ray said that he had looked everywhere and made a lot of calls that were fruitless.
Ray didn’t know what to do. “What would you do?” Ray asked Aaron. Aaron said he would call Walt up and tell him the problem. “You can’t go wrong with simply being honest,” Aaron said.
Ray called Walt and told him the problem. Walt said that yes, he had given an envelope with $500 cash (现金) in it.
“$500?!” Ray said in surprise. “That’s a lot of cash, Walt!” Walt admitted that it was, but he had gotten a fat raise early that year and Ray’s wedding was the only one he’d been to in quite a while. Ray thanked him and also apologized, Walt told him that it was “only money.”
When Ray told Aaron about Walt’s gift, Aaron laughed. “The only thief at the wedding was Walt! I have already stopped playing cards with him because I caught him cheating. And it was only a $10 pot (赌注总额)! I’m sure I told you about that.”
“Yes, you did tell me,” Ray said. But, of course, he had to send Walt a thank you note anyway.
