21、One afternoon in 2022, something on the Internet caught my eye:a tiny hedgehog (刺猬) held by a big hand. The post read: “HELP! My hedgehog abandoned (抛弃) her two babies, and I cannot raise both of them because I have to go to school fulltime. Good home with experience needed as soon as possible!”
I had no experience with baby hedgehogs. I was an animal person through and through and had raised cats, dogs, birds, and guinea pigs. But this tiny animal was new to me, and it touched me that he was abandoned, that maybe I could love him and be the best mom for him.
I wrote the most heartfelt email I could. That was how I found my Louie. True to my word, he was my baby. Louie didn’t know he was a hedgehog. He never curled (蜷缩) into a ball, and he liked my two cats, no fear. The cats, however, were afraid of him, as he often moved into the room, running after the cats and blocking my way.
By the time he reached old age, Louie had only three feet. However, he still managed to climb the stairs to visit other animals. He helped me realize my dream of hedgehog photography, a hobby that began during childhood with cats and dollhouses. I love showing off his modeling.
Life has meaning because of the purpose we have. Louie needed a good home and mom, and in return, I got to be a good mother and be needed. Hedgehogs require great amounts of patience, trust, and knowledge—but the payoff (回报) is pretty great.

22、Why Does Walking through Doorways Make Us Forget?
We’ve all done it. Run upstairs to get your keys, but forget that it is them you’re looking for once you get to the bedroom. Open the fridge door and reach for the middle shelf only to realize that we can’t remember why we opened the fridge in the first place.
We can understand those temporary moments of forgetfulness may be more than just an annoyance. Although these errors can be embarrassing, they are also common. It’s known as the “Doorway Effect”, and it shows some important features of how our minds are organized. Understanding this might help us accept those temporary moments of forgetfulness as more than just an annoyance.
The Doorway Effect occurs when our attention moves between levels, and it reflects the trust in our memories—even memories for what we were about to do—on the environment we’re in.
Imagine that we’re going upstairs to get our keys and forget that it is the keys we came for as soon as we enter the bedroom. Psychologically, what has happened is that the plan (“Keys!”) has been forgotten even in the middle of carrying out a necessary part of the strategy (“Go to bedroom!”). Probably the plan itself is part of a larger plan (“Get ready to leave the house!”), which is part of plans on a wider and wider field (“Go to work!”, “Keep my job!”, “Be a productive and responsible citizen”, or whatever). Each field requires attention at some point. Somewhere in controlling the complex levels, the need for keys suddenly comes into mind.
Our memories, even for our goals, are planted in webs of connections. That can be the physical environment in which we form them, which is why revisiting our childhood home can bring back a flood of previously forgotten memories, or it can be the mental environment—the set of things we were just thinking about when that thing suddenly comes into mind.
The Doorway Effect occurs because we change both the physical and mental environments, moving to a different room and thinking about different things. That hurriedly thought-up goal, which was probably only one plate among the many we’re trying to spin (旋转), gets forgotten when the context changes.

23、In choosing a friend, one should be very careful.A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy.Sometimes you will meet fair weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend?I look for certain qualities (品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability (可靠).
Above all else,I look for understanding in a friend.A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge.Instead,he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person's place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however,a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short,a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability.I can always depend on (信赖) a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time,I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor,he will do his best to help me.If I am in trouble,he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special.A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun.We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with.A good friend likes the same things I like.We share experience (经验) and learn from each other.A good friend has a good sense of humor (幽默),too. He likes to laugh with me.That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.

24、It seems we can't get off the planet fast enough. Two thirds of NASA's money is spent on manned space exploration. We've seen all we can see on Earth, right? Wrong. The final place is here, under the surface of the sea.
When we are heading down into the ocean, human limits are quickly reached. At a depth of 200 metres, the water is as black as a moonless night. Most nuclear submarines would implode before they reach 1 km down. At a depth of 3 km—still less than the average depth of the ocean—there's a good chance that you'll discover a new species. The deepest-diving whales go no further. At the very bottom, about 11 km down, lies the Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench in the Pacifice Ocean. Twelve humans have walked on the Moon, but only three have seen the Challenger Deep with their own eyes.
Yet things live down there. Big things. A very loud sound was once heard and scientists suggested that it was produced by an animal bigger than a blue whale, the largest creature known on the planet.
In the late 1990s, a deep-water submarine was dropped in the Southern Ocean, and passing 4, 000 metres, it discovered something huge passing under it. Surprised? Don't be. The ocean covers 71% of the planet's surface and we've studied less than 5% of it. We know more about the dark side of the Moon than about the bottom of the sea.
One reason that we explore space is to find evidence of other life forms. The search for life outside of Earth is important, but robots can look under the dry rock on Mars better than humans. They're absolutely important for doing ocean research too, but they can't look under the sea. The cost of exploration is rising, but the results would benefit all our lives.
Perhaps now it's time to begin a new period of sea exploration. Manned exploration of space is science fiction. The adventure in the deep sea is a science fact.
【1】What do the examples in Paragraph 2 suggest?
A.Sea exploration is no easy task.
B.Nuclear submarines need to be improved.
C.The ocean is far deeper than people expected.
D.The condition under the sea is similar to that on the Moon.
【2】What do we know about the Challenger Deep?
A.Blue whales live there.
B.No one has ever been there.
C.People are trrified at the sight of it.
D.It is the deepest known location in the ocean.
【3】What does the author think of the discovery in the Southern Ocean?
A.It's surprising.
B.It's no wonder.
C.It's worrying.
D.It's no success.
【4】What does the author want to tell us?
A.Space exploration is of little value.
B.We spend too much money on space travel.
C.Humans' success lies in how much they explore the sea.
D.The ocean is the place where we should make our efforts.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Writing assignment had always been difficult for fifth grader Jimmy and this time it just seemed impossible. The English teacher Mrs. Davis gave them the title, I Pride Myself on…Jimmy racked his brains but found nothing he was proud about himself. He was only average in everything both at home and at school.
At home, his parents supported and took care of the family; his elder sister Julia was sometimes helpful with housework and taking care of his baby sister Lily, who was twelvemonth sold. As for Jimmy, he was the kind of middle kid who seemed nonexistent except for his appearance at the dinner table for each meal. At school, he was average in all subjects and never had a chance to standout in school activities. It seemed to him that all his friends deserved certain kind of praise either for their academic performance or for a favorite hobby, except him. His teachers would be satisfied if he didn’t get himself into some kind of trouble each day.
It was Friday evening. The composition would be due the next Monday but Jimmy was still trying to figure out what to write about. After dinner, he stood by the kitchen window, wondering what the teacher would say if he failed to finish the composition on time. He could hear Julia promising Mom and Dad she would take care of Lily so that Mom and Dad could leave for a movie and have a good time.
“Jimmy, what are you up to there?” Julia asked putting Lily in the stroller (婴儿车). Jimmy went overhanging his head and poured out his trouble. “That’s really a problem,” said Julia with compassion. “But if you will look after Lily this evening, I will tell you what you can pride yourself on.” That seemed a fair deal for Jimmy and he accepted it. After some instructions on baby care, Julia left Lily to Jimmy and went upstairs.
