  • 21、New fences, fresh floor coverings and plenty of paint; home improvement has become the national amusements to kill time during the pandemic (疫情) as the nation has spent more time at home and rediscovered a passion for DIY after a decade of decline. The close down of pubs, restaurants and sporting fields, financial pressures and the need to adapt houses and flats to deal with changed circumstances, started a trend in DIY this year, particularly among 18 to 34-year-olds.

After years of falling sales, store close down and cost-cutting, B&Q -the DIY chain is hoping the tide may finally have changed its tough situation. Kingfisher, the parent company of B&Q, is investing in digital marketing, home delivery and new products to attract the imagination of the young generation.

Thierry Gamier, chief executive (总裁) of Kingfisher, has plenty of data to prove how consumers warmed to DIY again in 2020. It began in the spring with painting fences and decorating walls or cars. Sales of pressure washers increased by 80% at B&Q. People then moved on to gardening, setting up home offices and entertaining outdoors.

It has been the same story in some other countries. Demand for fencing, decorating wooden cabins in continental Europe and the us has put such a stress on wood supply chains that sawmill (锯木厂) and producers are working hard to tackle the problem. Paint supplier to B&Q are concentrating on the most popular shades, reducing the product range so they can keep up with the demand for high volumes.

But the big focus is on digital. As demand for home shopping rocketed during the pandemic, B&Q began using its stores to help pick and pack home deliveries. The group now handles 1.5 million orders a week. Online now accounts for 17% of sales -up from 8% before the pandemic and Gamier hopes to expand further.

【1】Why did DIY regain popularity in 2020?

A.Pandemic made it a national pastime.

B.The DIY chain tried to please the public.

C.Stores offered a discount on DIY materials.

D.Public faculties failed to meet people's needs.

【2】What can we infer about the comeback of DIY?

A.It will soon go quiet again.

    B.It's welcomed only by youth.

C.It has taken the world by storm.

D.It offers companies chances to recover.

【3】What is B&Q's solution to the pressure from sales boom?

    A.Narrowing the product range.

    B.Specializing in new products.

    C.Focusing on digital products only.

D.Using stores to handle home deliveries.

【4】What's Gamier's opinion about the prospect of online sales?

    A.Uncertain

    B.Confident.

    C.Pessimistic.

    D.Cautious

  • 22、   Hidden away in the mountains of western Tanzania is one of the largest lakes in the world: Lake Tanganyika.

Environmentalists want to protect the beauty and biological diversity of this area from the harmful effects of overfishing and deforestation. However, in order to do this, they need the cooperation of people in the nearby village of Mahale. In this poor community, malaria and typhoid (疟疾和伤寒) are spreading, there is little access to doctors and 13% of children die before age 5. How can we expect people who cannot save their own children to care about saving the environment?

While it is true that the Mahale villagers are suffering, environmentalists argue that Lake Tanganyika is in an equally terrible condition. This lake is home to hundreds of fish species found nowhere else on the globe. Eighty mammal species live in the surrounding forests and mountains. 90% of Tanzania’s endangered chimpanzees live in this area. Damage to this ecosystem will result in untold losses. Furthermore, environmentalists see the destruction of the environment as a direct function of the villagers’ poverty (贫穷): as the fish population decreases, people are forced to clear more land to grow rice and corn. As they clear more land, the soil run-off from deforestation further reduces the fish population, making it even more difficult for people to survive on fishing alone. This cycle harms both the Mahale villagers and the environment.

To meet their goal of protecting Lake Tanganyika, environmentalists are now using a many-sided approach in Mahale: helping the villagers gain access to healthcare, educating fishermen and farmers about the effect of deforestation and their own role in the decreasing fish population, and protecting areas of the lake where fish lay eggs. Since natural resources can be the tool by which the people of Tanzania work themselves out of poverty, it is essential that these resources are managed well. By combining health services with protection activity, we can begin to heal the suffering in western Tanzania, for people and the land alike.

1What do we know about Lake Tanganyika from the passage?

A.It leads to the people’s poverty.

B.It faces a serious situation now.

C.It is the largest lake in the world.

D.It’s home to some unique animals in the world.

2Which of the following might environmentalists agree with?

A.Saving lives is more important than saving the lake.

B.Offering the locals healthcare directly contributes to less fishing of the lake.

C.Educating the locals can promote their awareness of environmental protection.

D.Gaining access to natural resources is the only way for locals to fight poverty.

3What might be the best title for the passage?

    A.Protecting Lake Tanganyika

B.The Poor Life of Villagers in Mahale

    C.The Importance of Lake Tanganyika

D.Villagers in Mahale and Lake Tanganyika

  • 23、   Iran’s Lake Urmia was once the second-largest saltwater lake in the world, covering more than 2,000 square miles at its deepest in the 1990s. In the past two decades, the lake has dried out, decreasing at times to less than 20% of its average size.

It’s not a story of climate change, though that certainly contributed. It’s a case of water mismanagement. Researches blame water overuse and inefficiency in agriculture, new dams(大坝)and irrigation(灌溉)projects, a bridge cutting across the lake, declining rainfall and rising temperature for much of the drying out.

“For me this is a really important topic: the environmental problems in the world,” says photographer Maximilian Mann, who traveled to Iran three times. His photos are collected from all three trips.

Lake researchers say there have been encouraging signs in the past few years. This past spring, massive flooding in Iran helped the lake regain water level as well. Mann’s photos were taken before that flooding.

“The floods certainly helped and increased the water levels,” says Amir AghaKouchak, a professor at the University of California, who has studied the lake. “However, one or a series of floods won’t have a long-term influence. The main issue in the basin is that the water demand is much higher than the renewable water in the basin. If the water demand in the basin is not managed, after a while the lake will continue to dry out. And the situation remains really worrying.”

【1】How does the author begin the text?’

    A.By giving an example.

    B.By describing an event.

    C.By making a comparison.

    D.By expressing an opinion.

【2】Which of the following is a reason that contributed to the change of the lake?

A.Water overuse and inefficiency in industry.

    B.Massive flooding.

    C.Rising rainfall and declining temperature.

    D.New dams and irrigation projects.

【3】What do we know about the lake?

A.It used to be the second largest lake in the world.

B.It had 2000 miles in depth in the 1990s.

C.It is linked to a new dam by a bridge.

D.It has regained some water level in the past few years.

【4】What is Amir AghaKouchak’s attitude toward the future of Iran’s Lake Urmia?

    A.Pessimistic.

    B.Hopeful.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Unclear.

  • 24、   Leaders in the aviation (航空)industry plan to launch a campaign that they hope will work against what they call a " flight shaming(使蒙羞)” movement. They say flight shaming has weakened peopled demand for air travel in Europe . Some travelers there are increasingly concerned about the effects of flying on the environment. Activists have been calling for greater action against climate change. That includes avoiding air travel.

Flight shaming has affected air travel demand in many European countries, including Britain, France and Germany. The campaign will try to explain to the public how the industry is reducing its effect on the environment. Juniac, head of IATA, said the flight shaming movement gave off "misleading information"..

The International Air Transport Association IATA is organizing the plan through the Air Transport Action Group, a group of aviation industry organizations and companies. Juniac didn't say when the campaign would start, but noted that details would be available to airports and airlines.

Commercial flying is estimated to cause about 2.5% of worldwide carbon emissions(释放). However, that number could rise as worldwide air travel increases.

The aviation industry says it has already cut carbon emissions by one-half since 1990. The improvements are mainly the result of aircraft that use fuel more effectively. The industry plans to cut emissions further by 2050. It has a goal of stopping the growth of carbon emissions by 2020.

Airlines also have warned of the harmful effects of the flight shaming movement. Some have criticized the industry for failing to explain itself Tim Clarkpresident of the airline Emiratessaid that improvements in technology have reduced the environmental effects of passenger airplanes.
