  • 21、Often called “the universal language”, music can be powerful. Concerts combine music with performance, visual arts and sometimes social causes. The Guardian listed 50 concerts that changed modern music history. Let’s look at some of them.

    ● Bob Dylan: Newport Folk Festival

    Rhode Island, US,

    July 25, 1965

Bob Dylan is famous for his poetic guitar ballads (民谣). Many of his famous songs were about improving the rights of black Americans and protesting the Vietnam War.

However, in this 1965 concert, Dylan challenged his audience — he took out an electric guitar and made a sharp sound. Many fans felt that Dylan “betrayed (背叛)” them and his style. The Guardian said this is when folk rock was born.

    ● Live Aid

    London, UK,

    July 13, 1985

As its name suggests, Live Aid was for helping people. It raised $245 million to fight famine (饥荒) in Ethiopia. It’s often seen as the first benefit concert of its kind.

The show lasted 16 hours and was broadcast live in more than 140 countries. It had nearly 1.5 billion TV viewers. More than 100 rockstars from around the world participated.

    ● Beyonce: Coachella Music Festival

    California, US,

    April 14, 2018

There is now a rule of show business: A Beyonce performance will steal the show. Her powerful voice, energetic dance moves and creative outfits together give her a unique style.

At the Coachella Music Festival, Beyonce had an all-black dancer and backing vocals lineup. The concert, which fans call “Beychella” on Twitter, took 100 backup (支持性的) performers and three months of rehearsals.

The Guardian called it a combination of “ancestral spirit (先祖之魂), modern entertainment and personal will”. Beyonce is like “a goddess of war”.

  • 22、The “three ox spirit” (三牛精神) first appeared in President Xi Jinping’s speech at a New Year’s gathering last December. The ox is a symbol of diligence (勤劳), progress and strength. On Feb 18, the first working day of the new year, Hua Chunying, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, explained it on the social media to encourage people with the “three ox spirit”—the serving-the-people ox, the pioneering ox, the persisting ox.

Centuries ago, most people earned their living through farming. The ox was used to help in the field and carry heavy goods.

The ox has played an important place in Chinese culture. Ancient Chinese poets and writers often described the ox in literature. In the Classic of Poetry, the oldest collection of Chinese poetry, the animal was mentioned in nine out of the 305 pieces.

Oxen seldom bully (欺负) the weak or fear the strong. They work hard and make sacrifices (牺牲). A poem by Lu Xun (1881-1936) — “Fierce-browed, I coolly defy a thousand pointing fingers; Head bowed, like a willing ox I serve the children (横眉冷对千夫指,俯首甘为孺子牛)” fully expresses the poet’s love to our country and the people.

So naturally, those who were born in the Year of the Ox are often expected to be hardworking and dependable. “They never want to be the center of attention or look for praise,” the website China Highlights noted.

【1】When was the “three ox spirit” first appeared?

    A.2018.

    B.2019.

    C.2020.

    D.2021.

【2】What is NOT in the “three ox spirit”?

    A.The progressing ox.

    B.The serving-the-people ox.

    C.The pioneering ox.

    D.The persisting ox.

【3】Why did Lu Xun choose the ox to use in his poem?

    A.Because the ox is weak.

    B.Because the ox is loving.

    C.Because the ox is helpful.

    D.Because the ox is proud.

【4】What are the people born in the Year of the Ox like?

A.They always want to look for praise.

B.They want to be the center of attention.

    C.They are hardworking and dependable.

D.They bully the weak and fear the strong.

  • 23、   A few years ago, I bought a flat. It was a triumph of hope and determination over property prices, and the peak of a 20-year dream. The day I got the keys should have been the most exciting day of my life and yet, the second I opened the door, panic set in. I spent my first night as a homeowner in a hotel researching how to sell a flat and wondering if it was too late to change my mind.

I didn't sell my flat because I remembered why I had wanted it in the first place — but there are times when we get what we want and it simply isn't right. I've always found a strange disconnect between wanting something and getting it. Wanting is a place of possibility and, in a state of lack, the desire is strong. We imagine how this thing — a new job or relationship — can change our lives and at the same time forget that adding something to our life doesn't mean all our problems disappear. We create a narrative around the desire and, when we get it, and it is different to how we pictured it, we feel frustrated.

For me, this most often occurs in relationships. I have a habit of filling in the gaps with people, rather than getting to know them. I go on a date with someone and, instead of piecing them together brick by brick, I start to imagine what my life would be like with them in it. It shouldn't have been a shock that the reality in no way matched my fantasy — but it was. I knew I wanted out, yet part of me felt committed: this was someone I thought I had wanted for so long, I couldn't walk away, could I?

We tend to shame others for changing their minds. I think, however, it's far braver to move towards something that will bring happiness than to stay in a miserable situation to protect your pride. So, when someone tells you they've changed their minds, congratulate them on knowing themselves well enough, and being strong enough, to admit it. It takes a lot to come clean about getting it wrong, but the relief of doing so — of setting ourselves free from a personal-shaped hole, is worth it every time.

【1】Why did the author spend her first night as a homeowner in a hotel?

    A.The flat was under decoration.

B.She wanted to sell this terrible flat.

C.The flat was different from her desire.

B.Getting to know others little by little naturally.

C.Imagining what the life would be like with others.

D.Spending plenty of time to promote the relationship.

【3】What message does the author try to tell us?

    A.Never change your mind.

B.Never give up your first-time dream.

C.It is worthwhile to protect one's own pride.

D.It is brave to step out of a miserable situation.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.A new flat

    B.A personal-shaped hole

    C.A proud soul

    D.An unexcepted accident

  • 24、Back in 2011, the then-16-year-old Boyan Slat was looking forward to a thrilling day of diving off the coast of Greece on a school trip. That excitement turned to despair when he discovered that the colorful ocean life he had been expecting had nearly been replaced by a sea of plastic trash. Throughout the rest of his trip, there was a question that wouldn’t stop running through his mind: Why can’t we just clean it all up?

Slat’s question became the basis of a high school research project in which he studied the critical danger plastic pollution poses to the oceans: how plastic makes it out to sea, and where it collects. He learned that plastic trash from rivers eventually finds its way into the oceans and gathers in one of five primary circulating currents, where a huge collection of trash already floats around.

After devising a method of removing ocean plastic involving the use of solar-powered platforms with attached booms and the ocean’s own currents, Slat presented his ideas in a TEDx talk that spread rapidly. Soon, investors were opening their wallets in support of his plan, leading him to found The Ocean Cleanup, of which he is currently the CEO.

Slat’s plan to clean up the oceans received a lot of media attention but also some criticism. How, for instance, could his team test these cleanup systems in real-world conditions without knowing the scale of the challenges they’d face? Wouldn’t it be more practical to cut off the flow of trash from the source instead of using potentially unreliable devices?

Slat isn’t afraid of failure though, and indeed, the initial versions of his system suffered some technical problems. However, in 2019, his system successfully returned its first loads of plastic waste to shore, and the most recent version collected nearly 20,000 pounds of trash. Some of this was recycled and sold as eco-friendly sunglasses, as Slat’s goal is for the system to be able to pay for itself. The source of the pollution isn’t being ignored either. Slat’s company has developed a smaller system, called the Interceptor, that can gather plastic from rivers. So far, Interceptors have been used in three countries.

According to Slat, these cleanup systems aren’t the only solution for the problem of sea plastic waste, for we must also rethink the way we deal with plastic globally. But in the meantime, a fix to the mess we’ve already made is needed.

【1】What did Slat’s ocean trip lead to in 2011?

    A.A tourist boom.

    B.A research project.

    C.A scientific award.

    D.A scientific breakthrough.

【2】How did Slat’s cleanup approach work?

A.By speeding up the flow of ocean’s currents.

B.By breaking down the collection of plastic.

C.By attaching knives to the bottom of ships.

    D.By combining a platform with ocean’s currents.

【3】What is the Interceptor designed for?

A.Solving the problem where it starts.

    B.Collecting plastic from seas.

    C.Making plastic into sunglasses.

    D.Paying for Slat’s cleanup system.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.An unforgettable ocean trip

B.Becoming one of the most successful businessmen

    C.An amazing scientific discovery

D.Cleaning the Oceans One Piece of Plastic at a Time
