二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A long-term American study shows the importance of early education for poor children. The study is known as the Abecedarian(初步的) Project. It involved more than one-hundred young children from poor families in North Carolina.

Half of the children attended an all-day program at a high-quality childcare center. The center offered educational, health and social programs. Children took part in games and activities to increase their thinking and language skills and social and emotional development. The program also included health foods for the children.

The children attended the program from when they were a few weeks old until the age of five years. The other group of children did not attend the childcare center. After the age of five, both groups attended public school.

Researchers compared the two groups of children. When they were babies, both groups had similar results in tests for mental and physical skills. However, from the age of eighteen months, the children in the educational child care program did much better in tests.

The researchers tested the children again when they were twelve and fifteen years old. The tests found that the children who had been in the childcare center continued to have higher average test results. These children did much better on tests of reading and mathematics.

A few years ago, organizers of the Abecedarian Project tested the students again. At the time, each student was twenty-one years old. They were tested for thinking and educational ability, employment, parenting and social skills. The researchers found that the young adults who had the early education still did better in reading and mathematics tests. They were more than two times as likely to go to college or to have completed college. In addition, the children who received early education were older on average, when their first child was born.

The study offers more evidence that learning during the first months and years of life is important for all later development.

The researchers of the Abecedarian Project believe their study shows a need for lawmakers to spend money on public early education. They believe these kinds of programs could reduce the number of children who do not complete school and are unemployed.

1The Abecedarian Project has lasted ______.

    A. almost one year   B. about five years   C. more than 20 years   D. no more than 15 years

2What do we know about the people who had been in the childcare center, compared with those who hadn’t?

    A. They were more likely to go to college.   B. They had children earlier.

    C. They had the same results in tests.   D. They are less sociable.

3According to the passage, The Abecedarian Project__________.

    A. involves children from rich families

    B. doesn’t provide food for children

    C. offers foreign teachers to help improve children’s language skills

    D. studies the importance of an early education for poor children

4What is NOT sure about the Abecedarian Project after reading the text?

    A. How important early education is for poor children.

    B. What the children learned at the child-care center.

    C. How many children are involved in the Abecedarian Project.

    D. Whether lawmakers will spend money on public early education.

  • 22、A full-time nanny is employed by the parents to provide high quality childcare for their children and to undertake all tasks related to the providing of that care. Nannies provide childcare in the family’s private home.

Full-time nannies with parents meet the physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs of the children. They typically do the children’s laundry, keep the children’s areas neat and clean, and prepare meals and snacks for the children. Depending on the age of the child and the family’s needs, the nanny may be responsible for bathing the child, transporting the child to activities and assisting the child with homework.

Since nannies work in the private home and serve as caretakers, and educators, nannies must be trustworthy. Nannies are often hired so that parents can fulfill their personal and professional tasks. For this reason, nannies must be dependable and reliable.

Full-time nannies work on average 40 to 60 hours per week and may live with the family as live-in nannies. For parents who hire a live-in nanny, at minimum they should provide a separate bedroom and bathroom and all meals and snacks. One of the benefits of nanny care is that the parents set the nannies weekly schedule. Nannies are typically required to have some scheduling flexibility.

Nanny employers must pay what is commonly referred to as the nanny tax, which includes social security taxes and medicare taxes, total about 7. 65% of the nanny’s wages. The other federal tax is referred to as FUTA. It is the Federal Unemployment Tax. State unemployment taxes may also apply and vary from state to state.

In addition to nanny employer taxes the nanny is responsible for her share of the FICA taxes. Nannies are responsible for paying their own income tax payments, however many employers agree to manage the payments for them.

Typical nanny benefits include 2 weeks of paid vacation, paid sick days and paid personal days and full contributions to health insurance. Nanny employers may also wish to contribute to a retirement savings plan for their nanny.

1 What does a full-time nanny usually do?

    A. She should do all the tasks connected with childcare.

    B. She must be able to communicate well with parents.

    A. the nanny should stop the kid from eating snacks

    B. the parents must prepare every meal for the nanny

    C. the nanny should be a person with education

    D. the parents must take responsibility for the nanny

    3If you applied to be a full-time nanny .

    A. you would work at most 8 hours a day  B. you would get your private space

    C. you would work seven days a week  D. you would have no time of your own

4What do you know about the nanny tax?

    A. The nanny must pay such a tax according to her wages.

    B. The tax almost covers one-fifth of the nanny’s wages.

    C. The employers should pay the nanny tax for nannies.

    D. The tax is said to be the highest of all walks of life.

5Which one is NOT the benefit of the typical nanny?

    A. Having a 2-week holiday with payment.

    B. Getting paid for sick leave.

    C. Having full contributions to health insurance.

    D. Having personal days but without pay.

  • 23、You have a backache; your legs are painful after a basketball match—what better than a relaxing massage (按摩)?

Scientists now say they have figured out the reason why a massage brings comfort. They say a massage changes how some of your proteins (蛋白质) act. This makes your muscles less inflamed (发炎的), according to the Los Angeles Times.

The leader of the study, Professor Mark Tarnopolsky at McMaster University, Canada, chose several healthy young men for the experiment. He asked them to do very tiring exercise. Then he looked at how the cells changed in their legs. After this, the men were given a massage on only one leg and Tarnopolsky recorded any cell changes again.

Tarnopolsky and his team found that massaging made the inflammation caused by exercise get better because it weakened the activity of a protein called NFkB.

Scientists also noticed that massaging helped cells recover from exercise damage. When muscles were being massaged, the amount of another protein called PGClalpha increased. This kind of protein can stimulate (促进) the growth of a tiny part inside cells called mitochondria (线粒体).

People used to think that massaging eases pain by clearing away the lactic acid (乳酸) which built up after exercise. However, Tarnopolsky and his team didn't see any changes to lactic acid.

Thomas Birk is a professor at Wayne State University, US. He said that the study was the first he had seen to analyze massage in such depth.  He said they wanted to start research 10 years ago, but technology was not yet good enough.

One day massages could be used to treat injuries and muscle disease. They may even be able to replace some antiinflammatory medicines, said Birk. But, he said, more research is needed for masseurs (按摩师) to figure out the best massages for different diseases.

1What is the article mainly about?

    A. A new way to massage.

    B. The best way to relax after doing sports.

    C. New research into massages.

    D. The advantages of a massage.

2How can a massage bring comfort according to the article?

    A. It weakens the activity of the protein NFkB.

    B. It helps protein recover from exercise damage.

    C. It can clear away the mitochondria in muscles.

    D. It can prevent inflammation in muscles.

3What does the underlined word “eases” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?

    A. makes easier   B. reduces

  • 24、Scientists recently have discovered a new species of bat that has bright orange for and black wings. They later named it Myotis nimbaensis in the journal American Museum Novitates.

Jon Flanders, who works at Bat Conservation International (BCI), was leading a team with eight other researchers in the Nimba Mountains in Guinea where they found the orange bat. Many bats live in the mountains’ old mineshafts (井筒) that are now unsafe to enter, so researchers placed nets at the entrances to trap bats while they flew. One night in January 2018, a brightly colored bat standing out among its dark-furred neighbors was also caught in the net.

“The color is just unusual. Its wings are black with orange fur. There aren’t a lot of orange bats in the world. I don’t tend to work with that many brightly colored bats. It’s definitely an unusual one for me,” Flanders says.

There are about 1,400 bat species in the world, including a few orange ones in China and South America — far from Myotis nimbaensis’s home in West Africa. For the past several years, more than 20 new bat species have been added to the list. However, those discoveries usually come about when scientists tease (梳理) apart the small genetic and physical differences between nearly the same species.

“Experienced researchers went out in the field, caught an animal, and said, ‘This is something we can’t identify.’ That’s much more unusual.” says Nancy Simmons, the American Museum of Natural History’s director of mammals.

To make sure that they had found something new, the team recaptured (重新捕获) the first bat they had found and compared it with specimens (标本) of other species. After doing some research, the team concluded that the new species of bat is at least five percent different than the closest related species, reports The Times.

Next, the scientists hope to study more about Myotis nimbaensis’s ecology — where it lives, what it eats, and what it needs in a habitat.

【1】What did the researchers do after arriving at the mineshafts?

A.They entered them for further observation.

B.They caught some bats with a big net.

C.They reported their newly found bat caves.

D.They made sounds to drive the bats away.

【2】What can we know about the over 20 new bat species found previously?

    A.They are commonly seen.

    B.They are different in colors.

    C.They live in West Africa.

    D.They share similar genes.

【3】Why did the researchers recapture the first bat they had found?

    A.To attract more such bats.

    B.To make a specimen.

    C.To identify its species.

D.To keep it in their lab.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

    A.An unusual adventure in Guinea

    B.Different bat species worldwide

    C.A newly discovered bat species

    D.Bats living in old mineshafts

Asian and Hispanic scientists do just as well as white ones. Black scientists, _______ , do badly.

One possible explanation is that review panels are inferring applicants ethnic_________ from their names, or the institutions they attended as students. Another possible explanation is social ________: It is in the nature of groups of experts (such as review panels) to know both each other and each other's most promising assistants and followers. Applicants outside this charmed circle might have less chance of ________ consideration. If the charmed circle itself were racially unrepresentative, those__________from the network because their racial group was under-represented in the first place would find it harder to break in.

Though Dr. Ginther's results are____________, it is to the NIH's credit that it has published her findings. The agency is also starting a programme intended to alter the__________of the review panels to see whether removing potential racial cues from applications changes outcomes. So she had been provided with everything she ever wanted since she was born. She lived an extraordinary life and always felt that she was not an ordinary kid.
