二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Rock climbing is not just for grown-ups. Your children can also enjoy this fun-filled activity as well as getting its advantages. Aside from its heart-health benefit, it is also known  to  increase  their  self-confidence  and  esteem(尊重).  While  it  may  not  be  an impromptu(即兴的) activity like running or biking, there are many climbing walls that are now available, especially with the development of fitness centers and camps.

The great thing about having your kids join these activities is that it follows up on their natural quality. As you know, children are natural climbers. You can see them going up on trees or climbing tall ladders. With rock climbing, you can satisfy their urges to be a climber.

What’s  more,  it is fairly easy for the kids compared with adults. With a high strength-to-weight rate, they have less body weight to pull up, and they are more flexible(灵活的).

It is also a low-impact workout that tests your children’s endurance(耐性). It’s easy on their joints(关节) as they burn energy during their ascent. In addition, climbing walls are like giant puzzles begging to be solved. Not only does it test the physical aspects of your children’s development, but it also wakes their mental abilities.

This exercise also helps develop your children’s essential strength and flexibility. Kids are challenged physically as they pull, lift, stretch, and twist their way up. This activity also develops their eye-hand coordination(协调) as they perform their climb.

Almost anyone can do it although it may vary in skill level, namely beginner, intermediate, or advanced. But despite its reputation as an extreme sport, children can do this. One does not need to be super-fit to join a rock climbing class. However, good technique is more necessary than strength when doing this sport.

1When it comes to climbing, compared with children, adults______.

    A.find it much easier

    B.must bear more body weight

    C.have a higher weight-to-strength rate

D.follow up more on their natural quality

2The underlined word “ascent” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by “______”.

    A.test B.climb

    C.challenge D.improvement

3What may the next paragraph talk about after this passage?

A.What technique children need to climb rocks.

B.What more advantages climbing has for children.

C.How much strength people need to climb rocks.

D.What training classes there are to teach children.

  • 22、If you missed the best books last year, there’s time to catch up between new releases.

    Four Hundred Souls

A unique collection, Four Hundred Souls is a new way to learn history. Ninety African American writers each wrote the 400-year history using a five-year period. Each writer chose their own method ranging from short stories to sharp arguments. The works were edited by X. Kendi and N. Blain. Read together, it’s a story of history from 1619 told through varying perspectives and styles.

    Set Boundaries, Find Peace

From the desk of licensed cousultant and relationship expert Tawwab, Set Boundaries, Find Peace should be required reading for every people-pleaser. The guide defines the term “healthy boundaries” within the context of real communication and backed by research and best practices in cognitive behavioral therapy (认知行为疗法). It is a must-read for the overburdened work- from-home employees always working.

From Pulitzer Prize-winning author Whitehead, Harlem Shuffle is a historical fiction novel set in 1960s Harlem. With the pace of a crime novel and the depth of a psychology essay, it’s a book that’s sure to keep you going once you get into it.

    The Other Black Girl

With a television adaptation with Hulu already signed, The Other Black Girl, the first novel from New York author Harris, is set in a shared workplace where two black colleagues face increasingly tense conditions that rapidly threaten more than their careers. • 23、Coming upon a clear - cut in an old forest is a shocking experience. Tees large and small are collapsed one above the other in pile, and the ground is covered with the tracks of heavy machinery. Such was the scene when forest activist Zack Porter and I hiked a newly built logging (伐木) road in Green Mountain National Forest.

Clear - cutting in the American forests has long been widespread. But now, the Forest Habitat Creation Project represents new reasoning which is hotly debated - that clear - cutting benefits native creatures. The thinking is that clear - cutting done wisely can mimic natural disturbances, for example, from insect invasions or from storms overturning older trees that produce what ecologists call Early Successional Habitats - places where young trees and bushes get the upper hand and animals that depend on such habitat thrive.

The project also states that forests “can only be saved by being destroyed” - by keeping them young. Timber (木材) interests are enthusiastic about the approach because it lets them profit from cutting trees while claiming the significance of conservation. Hunting groups favor it because a younger, less thick forest makes it easier to find the game and birds they're tracking.

Nevertheless, Porter says, “Allowing some of the oldest standing trees in New England to be removed is equal to dereliction of duty on the part of the government, who sees the forests as commodities (商品).” “Forests can produce clean water, clean air, carbon storage, and biodiversity that we need,” he continues as we walk among lovely mixed hardwoods and evergreens that are cut down for logging. “We shouldn't be removing them for short - term gain.”

In this sense, Zack Porter's description of logging for wildlife for short - term gain - the short - term gain of favoring habitat for species people today want to see and hunt - is reasonable.

【1】How does the author start the text?

    A.By presenting some ideas.

    B.By listing some evidence.

    C.By comparing different views.

    D.By stating his own experience.

【2】Which argument does the Forest Habitat Creation Project hold?

A.Profits can be made from logging.

B.Clear - cutting is beneficial to the wildlife.

C.The conservation of forest is of significance.

D.Clear - cutting can cause natural disturbances.

【3】What does the underlined word “dereliction” mean in paragraph 4?

    A.Fulfillment.

    B.Promise.

    C.Misconduct.

    D.Exposure.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.A New Approach to Forest Protection

B.A Hiking Experience in the Logging Road

C.How to Build Early Successional Habitats?

D.Is Clear - cutting Forests Good for Wildlife?

  • 24、   From dazzling costumes to loud music,Brazil's carnival is known as the biggest show on Earth.Concluding on Jan 29,Brazilian cities, including Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, hosted over 7 million visitors.

The week-long celebration is a top event featuring dazzling floats(花车),skilled dancers and giant parades(游行)。Think of the ceremony on a similar scale to China's National Day  parade and you're on the right lines.

The epicenter of the event is the Sambadrome. It is a 700-meter-long stadium built specially for the carnival.Similar to a catwalk runway, the stadium can seat 70,000 people. The parade is made up of the excellent samba schools in the region, who compete against each other to create  the best costumes,well-designed dance routines and floats.

These schools fight to be crowned carnival champions,by the judges on the final day of celebrations. This year the Gold Eagle samba school won the title for their 20-meter-high eagle float.Their dance routine and costumes also focused on the themes of power and community bonding.

As well as the main parade, smaller street parties are often held all around Brazil's other cities.Though not the main event, they are meant to be an open celebration for everyone and anyone to dress up,dance and listen to music into the early hours of the morning. But don't think  they're small village gatherings,as even these lesser celebrations can attract thousands.

There is a significant history behind Brazil's carnival.Carnival was originally an Ancient Egyptian festival to welcome spring and was later adopted by the Romans. They gave it a  religious meaning, using it as a final celebration before the fasting(斋戒)for Lent-a Christian belief.

Today, the carnival period is used to celebrate the cultural heritage of Brazil and other former European colonies. These include many Caribbean islands like Trinidad,as well as Quebec,Canada, certain Indian regions, and the US,where it is known as Mardi Gras. From  small beginnings, the carnival has become an almost global celebration of culture and diversity.

A.It dates back to ancient Rome.

B.It is celebrated for two weeks.

C.It is a large and impressive festival.

2What is the Sambadrome designed for?

    A.The grand parade. B.Sports events.

C.To point out how villages are different in celebrating the carnival.

D.To explain why street parties became the main event for the carnival.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Billy was 15 years old then. He grew up in a very poor neighborhood. No one in his family had gone to college before. Actually, few people around him had received higher education. They all struggled to live a good life. Therefore, Billy knew nothing about colleges or scholarships and he never thought he would go to college one day. Although he was a smart boy, he didn’t study hard al school and often got into trouble with other teenagers in his neighborhood.

One day, while Billy was walking on the playground, a boy of his age started making fun of him. Then that boy pushed him hard and Billy fell onto the ground. Billy became so angry that he stood up and beat that boy. So a fight began.

It happened that Billy’s English teacher Mr. Smith was walking nearby. He immediately ran to the boys to stop the fight. Billy was a bit worried because he knew his teacher was very strict with students. He was afraid his teacher would punish him. However, to his astonishment, his teacher didn’t do that.

“Billy, let’s have a talk,” said his teacher.

Billy, not knowing what his teacher wanted to do, was very worried. But he nodded. So they went to a bench nearby and sat down. After they sat down, Mr. Smith began, “Billy, I know you’re a smart boy, but you’re wasting your life now. Why don’t you study hard to go to college so that you can change your life and have a bright future?”

Hearing that, Billy didn’t know what to say. He had never thought about it. Billy was in silence. Mr. Smith continued, “I know you may have never thought about going to college. But everything is possible. When I was at your age, I was a troublemaker just like you and never thought I’d be able to go to college, either. It was all because of the support and encouragement of Mr. Howard, my math teacher in high school.”
