二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、“You can tune (为……调音) a piano, but you can’t tuna fish.” Upon reading the sentence, you’re either laughing, scratching your head or rolling your eyes. Welcome to the world of puns (双关语).

A pun is a form of wordplay that uses similar-sounding words or phrases for comic effect. For example, in the first sentence, the usage of “tuna” is a pun because it sounds like “tune a”. Of course, you can’t “tune a” fish, but it’s a clever way of using words in an unexpected way.

“They can be a demonstration of cleverness,” John Pollack. author of The Pun Also Rises (the title itself a pun based on Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises). “You’re relying on a person’s ability to analyze language, to understand the nuances (细微差别) and complexities of words. Puns show us how subjective meaning and its many layers can be packed into one word. That’s why for most of Western history, puns were a sign of high intellect. They were a tool, and they remain a tool, to pack more meaning into fewer words.”

Puns are used widely throughout popular culture in TV, movies, and campaigns and marketing. For example, the ice cream company Ben and Jerry’s regularly uses puns in their flavors, such as “Americone Dream”. The American animated comedy Bob’s Burgers uses puns in every episode from the title sequence, episode name and Bob’s burgers of the day— like the Poblano Picasso burger (a burger that uses poblano peppers named after the artist, Pablo Picasso) or Eggers Can’t Be Cheesers (an egg burger based on the saying, “Beggars can’t be choosers”).

You can try writing your own puns, but remember, don’t write with a broken pencil because it’s pointless.

【1】Why does the author mention a pun at the beginning of the text?

A.To introduce the origin of puns.

B.To help readers see what a pun is.

C.To show how confusing puns can be.

D.To describe people’s reactions to puns.

【2】What can we conclude from John Pollack’s words?

    A.Puns help us analyze language.

B.Puns are popular with clever people.

C.Puns are usually presented in complex forms.

D.Puns make use of different meanings of words.

    【3】How is paragraph 4 developed?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By making comparisons.

    C.By making a classification.

    D.By drawing a conclusion.

【4】In the last paragraph, the author wants to ______.

    A.give a warning

    B.ask for advice

    C.offer suggestions

    D.show comic effect

  • 22、When a humpback whale began playing with Nan Hauser like a toy, she feared the worst. The 50,000-pound mammal swam toward the marine biologist and began to push her forward.

Nan had been deep-sea diving for 28 years, but had never known a whale like this. It seemed to keep throwing Nan on its head and back. Most of all, it wanted to keep Nan under its pectoral fin (胸鳍). For ten tense minutes, the whale lifted Nan out of the ocean. She tried to keep cool and calm, but she was aware that at any moment, the whale could break her bones or organs. She smelt death.

Nan believed the encounter would not end well. Fortunately for her, it did! The whale left her alone long enough for her to surface and return to her research vessel.

Onboard the boat, she saw a 15-foot-long tiger shark swimming quietly on the other side of the whale. The heroic humpback wasn’t playing with her or attacking her. It was protecting her from a deadly predator. Nan later learned that at the same time, another humpback whale was busy keeping the shark at bay. She was moved to tears.

In another story, biologist Adam Warwick saved a black bear from drowning.

When the authorities saw a bear wandering around the streets of Florida, they shot a tranquilizer dart into the 375-pound hungry male, but he escaped into the Gulf of Mexico. The bear was attempting to swim four miles across the harbor. But after just 25 yards, he began to struggle.

Realizing the bear would drown, Adam jumped into the water immediately. He got in front of the bear and began splashing and shouting to try to make him turn around. In a panic, the bear attempted to attack Adam. The six-foot-tall bear reared up, but then fell backward underwater. Adam wrapped his arms around the half-awake animal’s neck. Keeping the bear’s head above water, he dragged him to safety.

【1】How did Nan really feel when the whale lifted her out of the ocean?

    A.Calm.

    B.Excited.

    C.Desperate.

    D.Puzzled.

【2】What does the underlined word “vessel” probably mean?

    A.Target.

    B.Boat.

    C.Laboratory.

    D.Car.

【3】Why did Adam jump into the water?

A.He got to swim in the gulf.

B.He would swim across the harbor.

C.He attempted to save the bear.

D.He decided to drown the bear.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Life and death rescue

    B.An encounter with the whale

    C.Bears: dangerous or endangered?

    D.The wild within the city

  • 23、It's never too early to start thinking about your summer vacation. Here are tips on how to plan a summer vacation that's relaxing and cheap.

If your summer vacation window is wide open, why not consider skipping July and August altogether? 【1】However, if you're set on travelling during high season, you can still save by being flexible. Flying out on a Tuesday instead of a Friday could save you a bit of money. 【2】 Portugal and Eastern Europe are much cheaper than France or the United Kingdom, while a trip to Southeast Asia could be more affordable than you might expect.

【3】 If you plan on flying to your destination, for example, it will be much easier to find seats on your preferred flights if you book in March than if you were to wait until the last minute. The same thing applies to hotels.

With so many places to see and things to do, planning a trip can be very tiring. 【4】 Seasoned tour companies take the stress out of travel so all you have to do is show up and enjoy yourself. More importantly, when you break down the costs of joining a guided tour vs booking everything on your own, you'll often find the tour saves lots of money.

【5】 Especially if you're flying on a cheap airline that does not include luggage, this can be a huge cost saver. Once you're on the ground, if you don't have luggage weighing you down, it will be easier for you to walk a mile to your hotel than take a taxi.

A.A package tour is a good choice if you're very tired.

B.There are so many fun things to do in the summer.

C.Don't forget about the destination you're considering.

D.Decide how much you have to spend on your vacation.

E.One of the smartest things you can do when travelling is pack light.

F.It's always in your best interest to book your summer vacation early.

G.It's better to travel in the spring or early fall when flights and hotels are cheaper.

  • 24、   Research shows students learn better when they’re well nourished. Healthy eating has been linked to higher grades, better memory, faster information processing and improved health leading to better school attendance, according to registered dietitian Elisa Zied, author of Feed Your Family Right. On the contrary, unhealthy eating habits can negatively affect learning. Researchers have studied many areas related to eating and learning.

Skipping breakfast can have a negative impact on learning. A higher percentage of breakfast eaters passed a biology exam in one study of college students. It’s also important to eat a high-quality breakfast. In a study of students between the ages of twelve and thirteen, the average mark increased as breakfast quality improved.

Even with breakfast, the brain can run out of fuel before lunch. In one study of students between the ages of seven and nine, having a mid-morning snack improved memory. The children who ate a smaller breakfast and lunch but consumed a mid-morning snack experienced a smaller decline in immediate and delayed memory. Attention wasn’t affected, however. Zied recommends yogurt with blueberries; this fruit has been proven to be linked to better memory in studies. A hard-boiled egg is also a good snack choice.

Kids who eat healthily are more likely to attend school. Without proper nutrition and adequate calories, students often don’t have enough energy to power the brain, resulting in tiredness and learning problems. In fact, alertness(机敏) improved significantly in students eating breakfast in one study of high school students published in the journal Pediatrics.

A study of public school students published in the Journal of School Health linked high intake of sweetened drinks, such as sugary sodas, to lower scores in math tests. A diet high in junk food and sugary sodas is also linked to childhood obesity, which could result in lower cognitive(认知的) functioning, according to the Yale University research. On the other hand, students with healthy eating habits are less likely to be overweight and more likely to learn well.

1What is an effective way for students to improve their memory?

A.Eating a big breakfast on a regular basis.

B.Staying away from junk food in daily life.

C.Eating something healthy at about 10:00 am

D.Adding yogurt with strawberries to their daily diet.

2What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A.Students will have better attendance at school after eating healthily.

B.Students will have a good performance as long as they are well fed.

C.A high-quality breakfast will make a difference to students, learning.

D.Every student has a strong awareness of eating breakfast.

3What would happen to students who eat much junk food?

A.They would become less confident at school.

B.They would grow too overweight to work out.

C.They would become unwilling to attend school.

D.They would fall behind other students at school.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.The impacts of eating habits on students’ learning

B.The advantages of healthy eating habits

C.Some suggestions on how to learn better

D.The link between diets and learning
