二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   In 2019, more than 1.4 million young people around the globe took part in the School Strikes for Climate Action protests that were largely advocated by 17-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. The inspirational young Swede, while a media favourite, is far from the first or last young person to fight for a better environmental future.

With the rise of social media in recent years, websites such as YouTube provide accessible coverage on ecological matters that quickly gather millions of views, and links to new scientific information are easily shared between peers. But, it's not just online research that exposes the truth, and it's not a distant threat either. Climate change is happening around us as we speak; an increase of droughts and heatwaves means a loss of crop production and one and a half acres of forest is cut down every second.

Of course, just because young people are now readily armed with statistics such as these doesn't mean all adults will eagerly listen to them. Many write off young activists simply due to their age, and others still aren't willing to see the environmental challenges we face, but that doesn't mean a difference can't be made.

A study on participants aged 16-24 in the UN climate negotiations revealed that adults perceived younger activists as being more trustworthy due to the lack of financial incentives (刺激)to be there. Young activists often have an independent view of what's going on and, being free from politics, they often say what adults aren't willing to.

So, it seems achieving a carbon neutral world in the fixture might depend on young determined voices inspiring experienced adults who can make a difference.

【1】Why is Greta Thunberg mentioned in the first paragraph?

A.To show that the young activists are playing a part.

B.To give an introduction to Greta Thunberg.

C.To illustrate the seriousness of climate change.

D.To arouse readers' interest in environmental protection.

【2】What does the underlined phrase "write off" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Consider unimportant.

    B.Take seriously.

    C.Give up.

    D.Write down.

【3】what does paragraph 4 focus on?

    A.The way young activists work.

    B.The advantages young activists have.

    C.The contributions young activists make.

    D.The views young activists hold.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Greta Thunberg: an outstanding activist.

    B.Climate change: a matter needing everyone's attention.

C.The rise of social media makes ecological matters accessible.

D.The young arc making a difference to the environmental future.

  • 22、   Huawei Technologies Co. displayed its much-anticipated in-house operating system Harmony OS on Friday, marking what some call the Chinese tech giant’s biggest push yet to build its own software ecosystem for the era of the internet of things.

The move is also expected to weaken the influence of the United States government’s restrictions on Huawei using Google’s Android operating system in smartphones, analysts said.

Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group, speaking in Dongguan, Guangdong province, said it is difficult to deliver a smooth experience across different devices with the huge amount of codes involved in the Android and Linux operating systems. Linux is an open-source operating system widely used in personal computers and other hardware.

“Harmony is a next-generation operating system designed to address the challenge,” Yu said, adding that it will be able to support a wide range of application situations, including smart TVs, automobiles and wearables.

The internet of things refers to a network of devices and other objects that can connect with each other and exchange data.

Yu said the US government’s restrictions have accelerated the company’s marketing of the system, which now has about 4,000 employees working on it.

The senior executive said Harmony can be used in its smartphones. But Android is still Huawei’s preferred choice for handsets if the company is allowed to use it.

“But when Android is not available, Harmony can be applied immediately to smartphones. Harmony is ready,” Yu added.

Jia Mo, an analyst at market research company Canalys, said even if Huawei does not use Harmony in its smartphones in the short term, its smartwatches and smart TVs can be equipped with Harmony to widen its use and accumulate more experience in building an ecosystem.

“Also, more importantly, Huawei chose to build Harmony into an open-source operating system and allow it to be compatible with Android. Thus Harmony will be more accepted by current Android users. This will prevent Huawei from repeating the fate of Microsoft in promoting smartphone systems,” Jia said. Microsoft failed to popularize the use of its Windows system in smartphones years ago.

1What is the significance of the Harmony OS?

A.It symbolizes Huawei has finished its own software ecosystem.

B.It may reduce the threat from US government’s restrictions.

C.It will accumulate more experience in building an ecosystem.

D.It successfully borrows from Microsoft's Windows system.

2Which of the following may take the place of the underlined word “compatible” in the last paragraph?

    A.Used harmoniously. B.Operated quickly.

    C.Resisted fiercely. D.Monitored closely.

3Where may we find this article?

    A.Fashion magazines. B.TV interviews.

    C.Historic documents. D.News websites.

  • 23、Queen Rider

Bonnie Wyndham got out of her mother’s car and looked at Almonside School. “I’ll make you sorry I’ve come here,” she told her, pleasantly. Her mother was getting out of the other door at the time so she didn’t hear, but Bonnie wouldn’t have cared if she had. Her mother knew her feelings. Mrs. Wyndham looked about her. Almonside was a funny school, all bits and pieces, buildings hidden away amongst the trees on a wooded hillside; very confusing at first sight. Then she saw the signs on a post: science block, gymnasium, riding centre ...

“Riding centre,” said Bonnie, showing a sudden interest. “Headmaster’s study,” said her mother. “This way.”

Bonnie followed her mother along a broad drive that curved between trees.

“I wish you’d walk beside me instead of following me like a dog,” said Mrs. Wyndham wearily, but she didn’t seem to expect Bonnie to do so.

A few minutes later, her mother was talking to Bonnie’s new headmaster in his study, while Bonnie herself sat and waited outside the door. Suddenly, Bonnie jumped up. “Why should I just it here?” she said to herself. “I’ll be thrown out before very long, anyway,” she said mentally to the door, “so why not get it over and done with?” She left the building and headed for the riding centre in the direction indicated by the sign.

There was a nice old building where the horses were kept, and a large structure for indoor riding. Bonnie looked about her, but there was no one in sight. There was a certain reverence about her manner as she approached the animals. Bonnie treated horses with respect. The horses were very well looked after, she could tell that at once.

Almost every stall was occupied, and she wandered along looking carefully at each horse and judging it. “They know what they’re doing here,” she told a small pony as she ran a finger along its nose. It was the next horse that pulled her up short. “But aren’t you the best of the lot!” she said. He was brown with a touch of white. Lively, probably, but Bonnie liked that. “You know, I have the feeling we’ve met before,” said Bonnie, stroking his neck.

“It was in my dreams and I was riding you to victory in some big competition.” Over the stall was his name: Maverick.

Suddenly, she couldn’t resist the temptation to ride the horse. “I wonder where I can find a bridle for your head, and a saddle for your back. Can’t be far away.” The room containing all the riding equipment was --- Bonnie was delighted to discover --- unlocked. Absorbed in the pleasurable task of putting a saddle on Maverick’s back, she forgot all about her mother and the headmaster. When she sat up high on the big horse outside the building, she felt like a queen, mistress of all she could see. Her nickname at her previous school had been Queen Bee, and she laughed delightedly as she remembered it. You ‘re the best horse I’ve ever sat on, Maverick, ‘ she said admiringly, “and when I say that I’m not kidding, I can assure you, because I know about horses, even if I don t know about anything else.”

She nudged him into a walk, then into a trot. “If I stay here, I think you and I could be great friends,” she confided. She went round and round the paddock. The rhythm was exhilarating, a little breeze whipping smartly past her cheek and making it glow. She could tell Maverick trusted her, and she felt certain that he’d jump well.

【1】What do we learn about Bonnie’s mother in the first paragraph?

A.She was used to being obeyed by Bonnie.

B.She had a favorable first impression of the school.

C.She had difficulty finding her way around new places.

D.She was aware of Bonnie’s attitude to her new school.

【2】How did Bonnie feel when she was looking at the horses?

A.excited to recognize a horse she already knew

B.impressed by the high standards at the riding centre

C.anxious to make sure that the horses would like her

D.nervous about being seen with the horses

【3】What does the underlined phrase “pulled her up short” mean in the passage?

    A.made her stop in surprise

    B.made her a bit frightened

    C.made her feel sorry

    D.made her change her mind

【4】What do we learn about Bonnie by the end of the text?

A.She is looking forward to taking up an exciting hobby.

B.She is concerned about making new friends.

C.She is beginning to feel more positive about the school.

D.She is disappointed about having so little time with the horses.

  • 24、   While studying at Jadavpur University, Banerjee wanted to find a creative and socially beneficial alternative to bricks. Along with his classmates, Banerjee created, a social enterprise called Qube in 2017. Its product is the Plastiqube-an alternative brick made from waste plastic.

Banerjee and his team work with waste collectors to gather garbage, including water bottles and abandoned bags. The garbage is then cleaned, cut up and pressed into blocks by hand. “Each Plastiqube brick costs 5 to 6 rupees about 8 cents to makewhile the average clay brick sells for about 10 rupees (14 cents),” Banerjee says. What 's more, unlike traditional bricks, Plastiqubes don' t use any mortar (砂浆). “They are basically like Lego bricks,” explains Banerjee, now aged 22. He adds“There are interlocking designs on the bottom and the top, and they lock between each other.

India is estimated to throw away over 25, 000 tons of plastic waste every day. Around 40% of it is left uncollected. “We’re building something sustainable (可持续的) out of garbage,” Banerjee says. By taking coal and mortar out of the brick making process, Banerjee claims Plastiqubes can reduce energy use by 70 percent, generating a much lower carbon foot-print than traditional bricks.

Each Plastiqube brick contains 1.6 kilograms of waste plastic. They haven't yet been tried out for practical purpose but tests on their fire resistance and long- term steadiness are now in progress. Banerjee believes they will last even longer than traditional clay bricks, while removing waste plastic from the environment for centuries.

Banerjee's innovation has, already won him recognition. He was a regional finalist for the United Nation's 2018 Young Champions of the Earth awards. He is also part of the Yunus and Yunus Global Fellowship. Banerjee will not only encourage young engineers to dream big, but also to think carefully about the environmental impact. “My advice is to start something while keeping a goal that it has to be sustainable in the long term,” he says.

1Why did Banerjee invent Plastiqube ?

A.To reduce the cost of bricks. B.To protect the environment.

C.To control the usage of mortar. D.To raise his company 's reputation.

2Which of the following makes the new bricks join together?

    A.Mortar. B.Lego bricks.

    C.Average clay. D.Interlocking design.

3How does the text describe the characters of Plastiqube?

A.By explaining the process. B.By analyzing some cases.

C.By listing some data. D.By giving examples.

4What can we learn from the text?

A.Banerjee has won lots of national awards.

B.Producing Plastiqube needs little labor force.

C.Plastiqube hasn't been used to build houses.

D.Banerjee likes inspiring teenagers to go for dreams.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A worried call came into Jimmy Gill’s bar this past March. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at the beach bar couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash-but her wedding ring was put inside.

Gill didn’t like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours scanning footage(影片片段)from 16 different surveillance(监控),cameras, watching the woman’s every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Within minutes, a young man in a jacket approached the bench, put something hurried in his pocket, and walked off. Gill posted a clip on the bar’s Facebook page. “I didn’t want to accuse him, ” he said. “I just asked if anybody knew who the guy was.”

Within hours, Gill got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather, who’d heard about the post from one of his friends. Prather admitted having taken the wallet and told Gill he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the dock (码头)into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.

Gill, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the dock. There, they got to talking, and Prather revealed that he wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gill, a father of two with another on the way, look closely at Prather-his small build, his pale cheeks-and saw him for what he was: more of a kid than a criminal.

But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be facing charges. “He would be going to jail,” Gill says. “I had to help him somehow.”
