21、 At first glance Esther Okade seems like a normal 10-year-old. She loves dressing up as Elsa from “Frozen”, playing with Barbie dolls and going to the park or shopping. But what makes the British-Nigerian youngster stand out is the fact that she’s also a university student.
Esther, from Walsall, an industrial town in the UK’s West Midlands region, is one of the country’s youngest college freshmen. The talented 10-year-old enrolled at the Open University in January and is already top of the class, having recently scored 100% in an exam.
“It’s so interesting and super easy,” she laughs. “My mum taught me in a nice way.” She adds: “I want to finish the course in two years. Then I’m going to do my PhD in financial maths when I’m 13. I want to have my own bank by the time I’m 15 because I like numbers and I like people and banking is a great way to help people.”
And in case people think her parents have pushed her into starting university early, Esther disagrees. “I actually wanted to start when I was seven. But my mum didn’t agree.” After three years of begging, Mother Efe finally agreed to explore the idea.
Esther has always jumped ahead of her peers. Her mother noticed her daughter’s gift for figures shortly after she began homeschooling her at the age of three. Initially, Esther’s parents had enrolled her in a private school but after a few short weeks, the usually-energetic youngster refused to go back to that school because the teachers didn’t let her talk in class. In the UK, education is not compulsory until five, so Efe started to do little things at home by teaching basic number skills but Esther was miles ahead. By four, her natural talent for maths had seen the eager student move on to algebra (代数学) and quadratic equations (二次方程式).
And Esther isn’t the only maths miracle in the family. Her younger brother Isaiah, 6, will soon be sitting his first A-level exam in June.
【1】Which of the following makes Esther Okade different from her normal peers?
A.She is the youngest college student in the UK.
B.She goes to university at a much earlier age.

【2】From the passage we can learn that _______.
A.Esther thinks her parents expect too much of her
B.Esther cannot adapt herself well to college life
C.Esther asked to go to university even earlier
D.Esther dislikes being taught at home
【3】What might be a main factor that has led to Esther’s being a maths genius?
A.The gene from her family.
B.Her course in the university.
C.The criticism from her teachers.
D.Her mother’s homeschooling.
【4】Esther can be described as a girl who _______.
A.is ambitious and has a clear goal

22、No matter where you are, you can be connected via your mobile phone number, email address or social media accounts. 【1】 What can you do to minimize these digital distractions and increase your focus? Below are some tips that can help you.
Turn on “Don’t disturb” when you study. If you want to get the most out of your study time, you must reduce distractions. I like spending about 30 minutes reading by using the Kindle app. 【2】 Because of this, I can focus completely on my reading.
Change your mind. One social issue in today’s world is the fear of missing out, which causes us to feel the need to be “connected”. That is one of the main causes of digital distractions. 【3】 You can do this by checking your messages and email before study.
【4】 Seriously, you can do this. You don’t have to be always available. When you tell people that you aren’t available, they will respect your time. No one will force you to be available because no one can control your life.
Turn your “should do” into a “must do”. We all have things we should do. All these “shoulds” pile up and never get done because they aren’t priorities. “Should-dos” have no urgency attached to them, so they fall to the bottom of the pile of things we want to do. When you change a “should” to a “must”, it becomes a priority. 【5】
A.I have no social apps on the phone.
B.Tell others that you won’t be available.
C.These cause what we call “digital distractions”.
D.I have also equipped other apps to help me study.
E.You must prevent this from entering your study time.
F.No one can avoid them during the daily working periods.
G.You will free yourself from distractions and spend more time learning.

24、 Swimming alongside wild dolphins has long been on the Hawaii vacation list. However, scientists are concerned that increased human activities may do bad to the animals by disturbing a very important period of their rest. “We have seen changes in their action,” Ann Garrett of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service said. “They will be more active with people around.”
After feeding in deep water at night, dolphins return to sheltered, shallow (浅的) water to rest during the day. The problem appears when swimmers draw them out of their resting state, a change in behavior that NOAA points out “may cause disturbance”.
“Disturbing their resting behaviors can actually affect their long-term health and the health of the population,” Garrett said. This summer, NOAA is set to put forward its new rules. “NOAA is considering a lot of measures. These measures may make some people angry, but they will undoubtedly do good to those dolphins,” Garrett said.
Today, a small number of Hawaii tour companies willingly join in a NOAA program called Dolphin SMART. Designed to lower the disturbance that dolphins suffer because of human activities to the minimum (最低限度), the program encourages tourists to stay 50 yards away from dolphins and to move away carefully if they feel the animals are disturbed.
NOAA’s new rules, however, would not be allowed to be chosen to follow or not, and could affect over 200 dolphin-related businesses as well as swimmers and other ocean users. Garrett said that new rules would keep tour companies from disturbing dolphins. “The final goal of the changes,” she said, “will be to provide more protections for dolphins while still offering a chance for tourists to have a pleasant wildlife experience”.
【1】What can we learn about dolphins’ living habits from the text?
A.They sleep in deep water.
B.They hunt in shallow water.
C.They rest during the nighttime.

26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
For many years the school system in Finland has been very successful. In the PISA survey, which compares reading, math and science knowledge of 15-year-olds around the world, Finland is not only the top European country but also competes with Asian giants like Shanghai, Singapore and South Korea. But what makes the educational system in this small country so different from others in the western countries?
Until the 1960s, most Finland’s most students left school after six years. In the middle of the 1960s, the Finnish government saw the need to change and modernize their education system if they want to be internationally competitive. Lawmakers made a simple decision: a basic school for all the 7- to 16-year-olds. Compulsory (义务的) education begins at 7. The government makes it possible for all children to attend preschool as well.
Most of Finland’s schools get their money from the government. The people who are in charge of the education system, from teachers to officials are trained teachers, not politicians like in other countries.
Teachers work with their pupils in school as much as possible. When teachers are not with the pupils, they spend a lot of time in schools working on the curriculum (课程) and new projects. Schools in Finland are small, at least for international standards. So teachers know every pupil in their school and try everything to succeed with their pupils. In contrast to other nations, Finland selects its teachers very carefully: only talented teachers go on to a university and receive a master’s degree in education. Finland only takes the best to educate its youth.
All Finnish children, whether they come from the city or the country, whether from a rich or poor family, have the same chances in education. There are not so many differences between the wealthy and the poor, as in America or other Western European countries. Education experts say that there is very little difference between very good and the worst students. Two thirds of Finnish pupils move on to higher education, the highest rate in the European Union.
