二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When most of us hear the word chocolate, the verb that comes to mind is probably “eat”, not “drink”, and the most proper adjective would seem to be “sweet”. But for about 90 percent of chocolate’s long history, it was strictly a beverage(饮料), and sugar didn’t have anything to do with it.

    The Origin of Chocolate

Many modern historians have estimated that chocolate has been around for about 2000 years, but recent research suggests that it may be even older. In the book The True History of Chocolate, authors Sophie and Michael Coe prove that the earliest linguistic (语言学的) evidence of chocolate consumption dates back three or even four thousand years.

    Valuable and Fashionable Chocolate Beverage

It’s hard to discover exactly when chocolate was born, but it’s clear that it was cherished from the start. For several centuries in pre-modern Latin America, cacao beans were considered valuable enough to use as currency. 100 beans could purchase a good turkey hen, according to a 16th-century Aztec document.

Sweetened chocolate didn’t appear until Europeans discovered the Americas and sampled (品尝) the native cuisine(烹饪). Chocolate didn’t suit the foreigners’ taste at first — one described it in his writings as “a bitter drink for pigs” — but once mixed with honey or cane sugar, it quickly became popular throughout Spain. By the 17th century, chocolate was a fashionable drink throughout Europe, believed to have nutritious, medicinal functions. But it remained largely a privilege of the rich until the invention of the steam engine made mass production possible in the late 1700s.

    The Birth of Solid Chocolate

In 1828, a Dutch chemist found a way to make powdered chocolate. His product became known as “Dutch cocoa”, and it soon led to the creation of solid chocolate. In 1847, Joseph Fry created the first modern chocolate bar. By 1868, a little company called Cadbury was marketing boxes of chocolate candies in England. Milk chocolate hit the market a few years later.

    Prosperous Chocolate Industry

In America, chocolate was so valued during the Revolutionary War that it was used instead of wages. Even now, statistics show that the humble cacao bean is still a powerful economic force. Chocolate manufacturing is a more than 4-billion-dollar industry in the United States, and the average American eats at least half a pound of the stuff per month.

1The earliest chocolate was most probably____________.

    A. a dish   B. a candy

    C. a bar   D. a drink

2It can be inferred from the passage that ___________.

    A. The history of chocolate is at most 4,000 years

    B. People around the world could buy things with chocolate

    C. Chocolate was well paid attention to since it was born

    D. An American at least eats a pound of chocolate per month

3Why did chocolate suit the Spanish’s taste so quickly?

    A. Because chocolate was so tasty and bitter

    B. Because chocolate was sweetened with honey of cane sugar

    C. Because chocolate was believed to be a source of nutrition

    D. Because chocolate became a fashionable beverage

4Which one shows the correct order according to the time of their appearing?

    A. Chocolate beverage---chocolate bar—chocolate candies---milk chocolate

    B. Chocolate bar—chocolate beverage---chocolate candies---milk chocolate

    C. Chocolate bar—chocolate candies—milk chocolate—chocolate beverage

    D. Chocolate beverage---chocolate candies---chocolate bar---milk chocolate

  • 22、   I grew up eating eggs from white shells; I didn't know they could be any other color.

Our eggs came from the grocery store in styrofoam packaging, and the eggs in the refrigerators at all my friends' houses were exactly the same. Life in the 1970s and 1980s meant no farmer's markets, no trips to farms and no concept of food variety.

When I began buying my eggs at the farmer's market, things changed. The eggs were brown and usually in paperboard cartons or Styrofoam cartons that were clearly being reused.

I know I'm not the only one who had that experience with eggs, so it's no wonder that many people assume brown eggs are more nutritious. If we're working off the assumption that all white eggs at the grocery store come from big factory farms and that all brown eggs come from local farmers who raise freerange chickens... sure. Brown is better.

    But is that true?

Eggshell color is determined by the breed of the hen, not by the conditions in which the chicken is raised. Generally speaking, you can tell whether eggs will be white by looking at a hen's earlobes, the colored skin on the side of the head. Hens with white earlobes generally lay white eggs. Hens with brown or reddish earlobes generally lay eggs that are brown, or sometimes light green, blue or a speckled creamy color, according to Michigan State University Extension.

No one breed of hen, however, is proven to lay a more nutritious egg than another, despite the color of the eggshell. Not all eggs are created equal because not all hens are raised the same way.

A test done by Mother Earth News on eggs taken from 14 flocks around the country whose hens were allowed frequent access to fresh pasture, land covered with grass, found that true freerange eggs were nutritionally superior to eggs sold in grocery stores.

“True” freerange means just that eggs from the grocery store that are marketed as free range do not necessarily come from hens that have spent their days wandering the barnyard, getting fresh air and eating a natural diet. When “Freerange” is on an egg carton, it means that the chickens can move around their building and have access to the outdoors “during their production cycle”

But access doesn't guarantee time outside. There's no regulation that says getting to that door has to be easy, how big the outdoor area must be, or that a chicken ever has to get outside. A chicken in a crowded henhouse may never get to the door, and if it manages to go through it, it may find there's no room for it in the small area outside.

That's why it's so hard to determine if freerange eggs at the store come from truly freerange chickens. At a farm or farmers' market, you can ask about the conditions that the hens' are raised in before you buy.

Another factor in the nutrition of an egg is the hens' diet. Although chickens are not vegetarians by nature—bugs and worms are part of their natural diets—Consumer Reports tested grocery store eggs and found that “hens fed vegetarian diets tended to have more of certain vitamins and omega3s than those from hens fed a conventional diet”.

So when you're choosing eggs and aiming for nutrition, don't judge an egg by its shell color. White eggs can be just as nutritious as brown eggs. Hens that are kept in conditions that are natural to them—with access to the outdoors, sunlight and exercise—and fed a good diet are what you're looking for. To find them, you'll need to ask some questions and, perhaps, pay a little more, because raising hens in pastures costs more than raising them at factory farming.

1When the author first saw eggs at a farmers' market, ________.

A.they were fresher than those in grocery stores B.they had an unusual colour

C.they cost less than those he had bought before D.they were variously packed

2It is implied in the passage that nowadays ________.

A.true freerange chickens can no longer be found anywhere

B.socalled freerange hens remain in henhouses all day long

C.the word “freerange” is only used as a means of cheating

D.the definition of “freerange” can sometimes be ambiguous

3We can learn from the passage that ________.

A.nutritional value of eggs depends on nothing but what hens eat

B.a diet mixed with plants and worms makes eggs more nutritious

C.farmers should feed hens scientifically to get highquality eggs

D.the breed of hens should be improved for the purpose of nutrition

4To get eggs richer in nutrition, you need to ________.

A.analyse their nutritional composition B.investigate how the hens are raised

C.assure yourself of the eggs cost price D.discover where the eggs come from

  • 23、Dogs need regular exercise to stay healthy and to stop them from getting bored. But the amount of time dogs need outdoors varies based on their age, size and breed.

    Based on their age

While puppies are often bundles of energy, it is important not to over-exercise young dogs. A good rule of thumb for puppies is that they should enjoy five minutes of a movement twice a day per month of their age; so, for example, if your puppy is 12 weeks old, keep walks or play sessions to around 15 minutes each.

Elderly dogs may struggle to take long walks, but should still be given the opportunity to go outside and move around at their own pace at least twice daily.

    Based on their size

All dogs should be let outside for exercise twice a day, but how intense that exercise should be depends, partly, on the size of the dog. Larger breeds need more space to wander around so, in addition to regular play in the house or garden.

Smaller dogs often require less space of a workout, so letting them out for a runaround, in addition to their daily walk, can be an appropriate form of exercise.

    Based on their breed

Some breeds, such as border collies, springer spaniels, German shepherds and Siberian huskies, have been bred as “working dogs”, so are suited to covering long distances. Dogs such as labradors and poodles have bundles of energy, so they are also great companions for a long walk.

Brachycephalic breeds, such as pugs or bulldogs, are more likely to struggle with intense exercise. For these breeds, two shorter walks each day may be the best option; make sure to incorporate some rest breaks, and plenty of drinking opportunities, too.

【1】How long exercise is suitable for a 4-month-old puppy?

    A.10 minutes.

    B.15 minutes.

    C.20 minutes.

    D.25 minutes.

【2】What might be the major concern in terms of the dogs of different sizes?

    A.Location.

    B.Time.

    C.Space.

    D.Frequency.

【3】Which of the following breeds is suited to workouts of low intensity?

    A.Labradors.

    B.Bulldogs.

    C.German shepherds.

    D.Siberian huskies.

  • 24、People of all ages and nationalities are opening Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn accounts to connect with friends, celebrities, and those who share similar interests as them. 【1】 Small businesses and corporations are also using it to develop closer relationships with their fans and attract new customers.

【2】 For starters, it can be an effective way to conduct market research. In the past, companies often spent millions on studies to determine what their customers wanted. However, they often had difficulties locating people who were interested in their products or services. Nowadays social media has simplified this process as many customers will follow or like the companies they purchase products from. Furthermore, online advertising campaigns through social media allow companies to specifically target people who like similar products as the ones they are selling.

【3】 It allows fans and customers to leave comments about companies, their products, or their services. In turn, these companies can evaluate this feedback and respond in a way that shows they truly care.

However, companies shouldn't jump into social media without a carefully-planned strategy, as this can cause more harm than good. A common mistake is putting new hires or outside consultants in charge of social media accounts. 【4】 Another mistake is using conservative, corporate language in posts and updates. On social media, people are looking for personalities they can connect with, so companies shouldn't shy away from using humor or being colorful. Finally, social media accounts should always provide value and other share-worthy content to fans, for that is the primary reason they became followers. 【5】

A.Social media has swept across the globe.

B.Social media isn't just for individuals though.

C.One company called Zippos does this extremely well.

D.The person controlling these accounts must be knowledgeable.

E.There are many ways that organizations can benefit from social media.

F.Social media also gives companies greater control over their brand image.

G.Only by following these tips, organizations can take their businesses to the next level.

Lesley bought a computer for the whole family to use a year ago, never thinking that it would lead to her sixteen-year-olds on becoming addicted to playing games.

Glen was playing computer games for increasing amounts of time and gradually he hardly left his seat. Lesley tried to restrict his game time, but this only seemed to fuel his addiction further.

Among his games there was one he especially liked. In it he would design his own world as he wanted it to be.

Although desperate, Lesley never gave upon finding a way to help the teen struggling with this gaming addiction. She decided to take Glen on a trip to his grandfather’s, who owned a big farm. Glen was unwilling to leave his game, but he knew it was not a good idea to go against his parents this time. They reached the airport in the late afternoon. Grandparents drove them up to their farm. They were all packed in the car, with adults chatting and laughing, but Glen felt lonely. Looking out of the window, he was attracted by the amazing scenery. The water was blue and sunlight glittered on its clear surface and the meadow flowed like a sea of green. He couldn’t help thinking of the world he would have designed in his computer game.

After settling down, Glen shut himself in his room. Except dinners, he refused to come out of his room and remained there all day. Sometimes, he stood by the window, staring at the peaceful garden his Grandparents made. However, one night, drops of water from the ceiling, dripping on his face, made him wakeup. Seeing the room was dark, he sensed something terrible. He dashed to the window. Shocked at what he saw, he realized a big rainstorm had just ended. He stood with his nose pressed against the glass, spotting his family struggling to clear the mess in the dim light. Thinking of the efforts his grandparents had made in the garden, their own world, Glen knew what he must do and went out of his room immediately.
