23、 As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments. Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the “enemy” would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.
Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.
One of the processes growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

C.follow others closely D.make sure not to take a wrong bus
【4】Which of the following would be possibly true when she was a child______.
A.She thought being popular among people was important.
B.She was always the leader of the others.
C.She always got poor grades.
D.She was not liked by others at all.

25、How many people can speak English? Some experts estimate that 1.5 billion people—around one-quarter of the world’s population—can communicate reasonably well in English.
Never in recorded history has a language been as __________ spoken as English is today. The reason why millions are learning it is simple: it is the language of international business and __________, the key to prosperity. It is not just that multinational companies conduct their business in English; it is the language in which Germans speak to Indonesians.
David Gtaddol, the author of English Next, says it is tempting to view the story of English simply as a victory for its native speakers in North America, Britain and Ireland, and Australia— but that would be a __________ . Global English has entered a more complex stage, changing in ways that the English-speaking countries cannot control and might __________ .
An important question one might ask is: whose English will it be in the future? Non-nativespeakers now __________ native English speakers by three to one. The majority of __________ in English today take place between non-native speakers. According to David Graddol, many business meetings held in English appear to run more __________ when there are no native English speakerspresent. This is because native speakers are often ___________ at ensuring that they are understood in international discussions. They tend to think they need to avoid longer Latin-based words, but in fact __________ problems are more often caused by their use of idioms, metaphors, and phrasal verbs. On one occasion, at an international student conference in Amsterdam, conducted in English, the only British representative was asked to be “less __________” so that the others could understand her.
Professor Barbara Seidlhofer, Professor of English at the University of Vienna, records spoken English __________ between speakers of the language around the world. She says her team has noticed that non-native speakers are __________ standard English grammar in several ways. Even the most fluent speakers sometimes omit the "s" in the third person singular. Many omit definite and indefinite articles where they are __________ in standard English, or put them in where standard English does not use them. Nouns that are not plural in native-speaker English are used as plurals by non-native speakers (eg, “informations”, “knowledges”, advices”). Other variations include “make a discussion”, “discuss about something”, or “phone to somebody”.
Many native English speakers will insist that these are not variations, they are mistakes. “Knowledges”and “phone to somebody” are simply __________. Many non-native speakers who teach English around the world would agree. But language changes, and so do ideas of grammatical __________ .

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a cold December, at the tail end of the Great Depression, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community. My father had died five years earlier, leaving us worse off; we relied on social assistance to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were secondhand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realized what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. Our rent was $25 a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would move out right after Christmas on the first of January.
The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to $25 for Christmas from social services. It was four days before Christmas. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our back rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while longer.
Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.
What Mom didn’t know was that I had been selling Christmas trees, sweeping snow and doing part-time jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots —boots that weren’t patched; boots with no cardboard in it. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, Pierre Paris boots, and they cost $23.
The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the shopping center for it. On the way, I noticed a grocery store.
