24、It was a summer day, a little leaf was crying sadly. “What’s wrong, little leaf?” the tree asked.
“It’s the wind,” said the little leaf, “he just told me that he would throw me on the ground to die one day.” “Don’t be afraid, baby.” the tree said, “just hold on me, and you won’t leave me until you are ready.” So the little leaf stopped crying, and went on singing and dancing. She grew happily all the summer.
When autumn came, the little leaf saw all the leaves around her growing very beautiful. Some were yellow, some were brown, and others turned into different colors.
Then the little leaf asked the tree what this meant. The tree said, “All these leaves are getting ready to fly away, and they have put on these colorful clothes to welcome their new lives.”
After hearing the words, the little leaf began to prepare to leave like others.
However, she saw that the tree had no bright colors. So the little leaf asked , “Oh, big tree! Why are you grey while we are all beautiful?”
“It’s the color of our working clothes,” said the tree kindly, “We must wear the clothes because we haven’t finished our work; but your clothes are for holidays because your task is now over”.

25、Can you understand the following words?
“Long time no see.”
“Good good study, day day up.”
“I like your smile, but unlike you put your shoes on my face.”
Yes, we call these examples Chinglish, like “people mountain, people sea”.
Chinglish usually means English vocabulary with Chinese grammar on street signs or products. However, many English speaking tourists love them. Tom has been living in Beijing for years. “I think many Chinese people dislike Chinglish. But I love it. It’s quite interesting. I think if the translations of English in China are all perfect, something will be lost from Chinese culture.” However, Chinglish will probably become a part of history in future. Beijing has made a plan to correct Chinglish within five years. “It is so funny to see Chinglish on the signs. And they are a kind of trouble for communication between the Chinese and foreigners,” a Beijinger said.
However, some people in China like Chinglish. They think that English has “borrowed” a lot from other languages such as German, French and Spanish in the past, and now as Chinese’s turn.
【1】What is Chinglish according to the passage?
A. The English words easy to pronounce.
B. The Chinese words difficult to translate.

26、Not all vegetables need lots of sunshine. Mark Hoffmann and his wife own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse in rural Kempton, Illinois. They often serve their guests fresh food from the garden.
The Hoffmanns have been growing food and flowers for over twenty years. For almost ten of those years, Mr. Hoffmann has been experimenting and working with shade (阴凉) planting. He says, “Most plants will produce more in full sun, but if you do not have full sun, there are other choices.”
For example, he grows tomatoes near oak trees. Oak trees can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffmann says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours a day of direct (直接的) sunshine, especially the morning sun. Not only does this go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours a day of full sun, it also shows how plants and tree roots can share nutrients (营养素) and water.
Mr. Hoffman says only plants with wider leaves do better in shady environments. He also found that his potatoes did better partly in shade than in full sun.
Moving them out of the sun helped control an insect problem. Mr. Hoffmann does not use pesticides. He planted the potatoes in the shade, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get the morning sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Some insects dislike shade, and the hottest part of the day is when they do the worst of their damage.
Time of day, brightness of the sun, shadows from trees, walls and buildings-these all influence how much sunlight falls on plants. And people interested in shade planting should also remember something else. The term “shade” can describe different amounts of darkness. It can even mean different things in different parts of the world.
【1】Which of the following can best describe Mr. Hoffmann?
A.warm-hearted
B.Experienced
C.Easy-going
D.Funny
【2】According to Mr. Hoffmann, how many hours of sunshine is enough to keep tomato plants growing regularly?

27、Choose the best answer:
Earthquake
Every 30 seconds there is an earthquake. But don't worry because most cannot be felt. Only a few big ones hurt people.
Many earthquakes happened in China, such as the big one in Sichuan. Thousands of people died in it. So it's important to know what to do when one hits. Here are some tips on how to stay safely in an earthquake.
If you are indoors during an earthquake, hide under a desk. Stay away from windows and anything that could fall on you.
If you are outdoors, move to a clear place. Try to be away from trees, signs, buildings and streetlights. These could fall on you.
If you are in a shop and far from the door, don't try to run to outside and rush for exits. Everyone will be doing that and you'll find it hard getting out. Don't get into a lift during an earthquake. Just hide under some strong covers near you.
When an earthquake has ended, be careful because after-shocks may still happen. These are just as dangerous as the earthquake itself. So stay under the desk until you make sure it's safe to get up.
If you are at home and you smell gas, open the windows and get out of the building as quickly as you can. A gas line in your house may be broken. This could be very dangerous.
Weather
Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence and feelings. In August, it's hot and wet in the southern part of the USA. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the northeast and the middle-west, it is very hot sometimes and very cold sometimes. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 study by scientists showed that the IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often do worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people's feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But big people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. There is "good weather" for work and health. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired or forgetful today? It may be the weather's fault.
