  • 25、You may hear about earthquake, but do you know what to do before, during and after an earthquake? Here is some advice for you.

Before an earthquake. It’s necessary to prepare yourself and your family. All family members should know how to turn off gas, water and electricity and know useful telephone numbers (doctors, hospital, police, 119 etc.). Never put heavy things over beds.

During an earthquake. It’s important for each of you to stay calm. If you are indoor, quickly move to a safe place in the room, such as under a strong desk or a strong table. The purpose is to protect yourself form falling objects. Stay away from windows, large mirrors, heavy furniture and so on. If you are cooking, turn off gas.

If you are outdoors, move to an open area like a playground. Move away from buildings, bridges and trees. If you are driving, stop the car as soon as possible, staying away from bridges and tall buildings. Stay in your car.

After an earthquake. Once the shaking has stopped, do not run out of the building at once. It’s better to wait and leave when it is safe. Check around you and help people who are in trouble. If your building is badly broken, you should leave it. If you smell or hear a gas, get everyone outside and open windows and doors. If you can do it safely, turn off the gas. Report it to the gas company.

1Which of the following is mentioned in the second paragraph?

    A. People should know how to turn on gas.

    B. People should know how to save water.

    C. People shouldn’t put heavy boxes over beds.

    D. People shouldn’t forget the phone number of others.

    D. moving indoors

3During an earthquake, if you are driving in an open area, you should____.

    A. speed up you car

  • 26、According to research, an average American kid watches TV for about 3 to 4 hours a day. That means he or she spends more than one and a half months a year in front of the TV. But some American kids are just saying “No” to TV.

Take Meghan Kelley from Pembroke, Massachusetts for example. She used to spend a lot of her free time in front of the TV. But several years ago, Meghan gave up her TV habits. Her days of watching TV ended when she and her classmates took part in Screen-Free Week. Screen-Free Week is on the first week of May every year. It is an event where children, families and schools are encouraged to turn off their TVs, computers, DVD players, iPads and so on and “turn on life” — read, enjoy nature, and spend time with family and friends.

After the first week, Meghan decided to test herself further. “I wanted to see how long I could go without TV,” said Meghan. “Could I do it for a year?” The answer was yes!

Although sometimes she misses TV, Meghan finds life without TV more interesting. She joined two soccer clubs and now plays basketball. Because Meghan is studying more, she’s also getting much better grades.

    根据短文内容,判断句子正(A)误(B)。

1An average American kid watches TV for more than 20 hours a week.

2The writer thinks older kids could watch TV more often.

3Screen-Free Week helped Meghan Kelley give up her TV habits.

4Meghan Kelley found it hard to live without TV at first.

5Meghan Kelley has never missed TV since she gave up her TV habits.

  • 27、Can dogs and cats get along well in the same home? People are thinking about getting a dog for their cat as a friend, but they are worried about that the dog and the cat will fight. A recent research has found that if the cat is taken back home before the dog, and if they are introduced when they are still young(less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is possible that the two pets will get along swimmingly. In two-thirds of the homes cats and dogs have a good relationship(关系).

However, there was something unfriendly between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression(侵略, 好斗)and fighting were found in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body languages are just different. For example, when a cat turns its head away, it means aggression. while a dog doing the same means submission(顺从).

In homes with cats and dogs living in peace, researchers found a surprising behavior(行为). They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk "Dog", and dogs can learn how to talk"Cat".

The interesting thing is that both cats and dogs seem to become smarter. They can learn to read each other's body languages, suggesting that the two may have more in common(共同的)than was expected(预料). If they understand each other's body language very well, cats and dogs can play together, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa.

The importance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond(超过)pets—to people who don't get along well, including neighbours, workmates at work, and even countries. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

B.they look away from each other

【3】What can people find surprising about cats and dogs?

    A.They eat and sleep together.

    B.They watch each other's behaviors.

C.They learn to speak each other's language.

D.They know something from each other's voices.

【4】In Paragraph 4 we can learn that cats and dogs ______.
