  • 25、Chemistry is usually thought to be more difficult than other subjects, at least for the beginners. There are some reasons for this idea. For one thing, chemistry has a very specialized vocabulary (学科专用语汇). At first, studying chemistry is like learning a new language. Also, some concepts (概念) of chemistry are hard to understand. However, with hard work and careful study, you can finish this subject successfully—and even enjoy it. Here are some suggestions to help you develop good study habits and better understand the topics in the book:

●Firstly, attend classes on time. Listen to your teacher and take careful notes in class. If possible, always review the topics you learn in class, and review your notes on the same day.

●Secondly, think carefully whether you really understand the meaning of a formula (分子式) or the use of an equation (方程式). A good way to test your understanding is to explain a concept to a classmate or someone else.

●Thirdly, pay attention to things which have something to do with chemistry in life. Watch or do experiments (实验) in class carefully.

●Fourthly, question often and do not be afraid to ask your teacher or classmates for help.

You will find that chemistry is much more than numbers, formulas and equations. It’s often used in daily life just like math and physics. Once you fall in love with it, you’ll get lots of fun.

【1】The writer gives _________ reasons why chemistry is thought to be more difficult.

    A.one

    B.two

  • 26、   No one can deny(否认)that Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most popular stars in the world. From collecting an Oscar to being chosen as Favorite Movie Actress at the US Kids' Choice Awards, she has many fans of all ages.

But as successful as she is, Lawrence has worked hard to stay natural and down-to-earth. She has a cheerful nature, saying things most actresses would keep to themselves. Wearing a beautiful outfit and jewelry at a big event, she told the reporters, “None of this is mine. I have to give it back.” She was also caught on live TV asking one of her co-stars “Is your rash(疹子)doing OK?”.

As part of the Hollywood “machine”, Lawrence plays the game as much as she has to, but still tries to stay real and think critically. In January 2013, she won Best Actress at the LA Critics Awards. While she was giving her speech, Lawrence refused to read the last part of her speech. She thought the speech written by her publicist didn't make sense. “The publicist said something I don't understand so I'm not going to say it.” she told the audience.

She has also criticized TV shows that promote an unrealistic body image. She said it is wrong to call people ugly or fat. In her opinion, girls should have a healthy relationship with food. “You look how you look. You have to be comfortable. What are you going to do? Be hungry every single day to make other people happy? That's just dumb (愚蠢的),” she said.

【1】What do we know about Lawrence from the story?

A.She has fans of all ages.

    B.She isn't friendly to her co-stars.

    C.She doesn't like her publicist.

    D.She has no jewelry.

【2】Why did Lawrence criticize some TV shows?

A.Because she didn't want to be fat or ugly.

B.Because she thought the shows were not interesting.

C.Because the shows promote wrong values.

D.Because the shows tell girls to eat freely.

【3】What’s the best title of the story?

    A.The real Jennifer Lawrence

    B.Lawrence’s awards

    C.Lawrence vs TV shows

    D.Lawrence’s success

    Kathy: an animal doctor

What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened in your job?

Probably the dog that bit me. It wasn’t a big one—I’m not afraid of the big ones. The small ones are the worst. It gave me a very nasty(凶狠的)bite.

Have you ever done any other jobs?

Yes, I did many kinds of jobs when I was a student. One summer I did fruit-picking in Spain.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever done?

In order to improve my English, I worked for a rich family in New York. I never had a day off and I had to do everything—cooking, cleaning, shopping—and look after their bad children. I left after two weeks and managed to get a job as a waitress in an Italian restaurant.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever done?

The worst job I’ve ever done was at an egg-packing factory. Working conditions are terrible—you stand for hours at the end of a belt(传送带), putting eggs into boxes. You can’t have a break, and if you want to go to the toilet, you have to ask for permission. And worst of all, the smell was terrible—I’ve never eaten an egg since then.

    C.How to Find a Part-time Job

    D.Reviews of Kathy and Peter.

Should people walk where they want

In most of England, walkers are limited to footpaths.

More than 100 musicians, actors and writers wrote to the UK government, “In the books we write, the songs we sing, the art we make, we celebrate the important connection that we feel with nature. But that connection is ________ by the fences that surround (围绕) much of England’s land, stopping people from walking free.”

Although in 2000, a law was passed to allow people to walk around 8% of England’s countryside. Some people say this isn’t good enough. Others point out that there are businesses that need to keep the land private. What do you think? Should people be allowed to walk wherever they like?

YES! — Nature belongs to everyone

Nowadays it is important for people to take a walk outdoors — for their mental and physical health. It encourages people and brings them ________ and relaxation.

Yet this space is not enough and is now surrounded by fences. To get closer to nature, most people have to travel for miles. Everyone should be able to get close to nature ________. Blue sky, flying birds and green tree-lined paths should not belong to any private organization or person. But the truth is that such a small number of people own such huge amounts of land. Among every eight British houses, one has no gardens. This isn’t ________.

NO! — The walking paths are enough

The land isn’t just for people’s enjoyment or health. For many people, it means family’s whole-year income. ________, farmers need fields to keep their animals, like sheep or bulls, for a living. Also, it isn’t safe for walkers to walk around because the land may have many hidden ________ such as wetlands and snakes.

Moreover, walkers do not always show their respect. They leave gates open, litter everywhere, scare off birds and stand over plants. In fact, many people are not really looking for a connection with the wild. They just want a short walk with the nice scenery. The government should focus on making paths for walkers and leave the rest of the land alone.
