  • 25、The judge(法官) thought Geoffrey Payne killed his wife. Now for the first time Payne wrote to a magazine from the prison about what happened on the night of 13 October 1999.

I had to stay late at the hospital that night to do an operation. I finally left at about 11p.m.. I drove home slowly because the wind was blowing and it was raining heavily. I was running into our road when a man suddenly ran in front of my car. I almost hit him but I stopped just in time. I was scared and the man looked scared, too. I got out of the car but he ran away before I could ask if he was all right. It was very strange.

When I got home, the lights were on but it was very quiet. I called to my wife but there was no answer. Then I remembered that she was out at a concert.

I was still very unhappy about what happened on the road, so I made myself a drink. Then I went upstairs to have a bath. I saw that the window in the bedroom was open. This was strange because my wife always locked the doors and windows before she went out. She was afraid of burglars. When I went to close it, I found Ellen. She was lying on the floor. There was blood everywhere. I rushed over for her pulse but she was dead. I was so scared. I sat on the floor beside her body without knowing what to do.

The next thing I knew was that the sky was getting light. I can’t remember a thing about that night. In the morning I phoned the police. They arrived half an hour after I phoned them. But it seemed like hours. During that time I tried hard to remember anything I could about the night before. I couldn’t stop thinking about the man in the road. What was he doing at that time of night in our quiet neighborhood?

【1】When Payne got home, he found ______________.

    A. a burglar in his house

    B. the bedroom window closed

    C. Ellen lying on the floor, blood all over

    D. Ellen waiting for him in the concert hall

【2】After he found Ellen dead, Payne   .

    A. called out for help

    B. called the police at once

    C. was too scared to do anything

    D. tried to find out the murderer

【3】Which of the following is NOT true?

  • 26、Nowadays, cell phones are part of our lives. Many people have cell phones. They can help us easily find people anywhere at any time. However, using cell phones too often may cause cancer(癌症). It’s reported that people who use a cell phone for 10 years or more may get brain cancer.

The suggestions below may help you reduce(减少) the risk of cancer; When using your cell phone, try to keep it away from your body as much as possible. Don’t put it on the bedside table when you go to sleep.

When you’re on the cell phone, use the speaker(扬声器). In this way, you have just 1/100th of the contact(接触) with radiation you have when you hold it to your ear. An earphone is also a good idea.

Try to keep your conversations short. If you need to talk longer, use an ordinary phone instead.

Change ears when you’re using your cell phone. Before putting it to your ear, wait until the person you are calling picks up the phone.

Your phone gives out radiation when you talk or send messages, but not when you’re listening or getting messages. Listening more and talking less can lower the risk of cancer.

Do not use your cell phone when the signal(信号) is weak or when moving at a high speed, for example in a car or on a train. At high speeds your phone is trying to pick up signals, and this increases the radiation it gives out.

【1】According to the text, using cell phones too much may cause ________.

Some people live to climb the highest mountains. Some people only think about it while others avoid ever climbing at all. But one thing is certain that all people come across mountains in their life.

When I was a little girl, my parents moved us to the tiny village of Otongo, Hidalgo, Mexico. This town was built at the bottom of a big mountain.

One day after school, while exploring(探索) the green woods of this mountain, I came upon a lot of stairs. What could these steps lead to? Could this be the way to the top?

I was so curious that I started climbing up those mysterious(神秘的) steps.

I climbed and climbed, but still there was nothing in sight. It was getting really dark, and I wasn’t even close to the top.

The voice of reason told me to hurry back home and try again the next day. I ran back home in the dark while trying not to get too afraid. I didn’t tell anyone about what I found that night. I went to bed dreaming about what I would find at the top of this magical mountain we lived on. Could there be a handsome prince, treasure or ghosts up there?

Ah...such childhood fantasies(想象)! Those were the days when we could dream. We could do crazy things. We believed! I'm all grown up now, and life has shown me a beating at times.

I did live on a mountain in a town as described, but I created this childhood fantasy to make my days so much more fun as a kid. This story is a good metaphor(比喻) for life today.

You might ask, "What was at the top of that mountain?" I ask you, "What would you have wanted to find?"

Dream about what's at the top of your mountain. What do you want out of life?

Tomorrow is another day, and still, you must climb. Whatever you do, never ever give up on your dream! Never let anyone tell you, "You can't."
