四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Police dogs are given special training to help the police with their work. Many different types of dogs can be trained to do this work, but the best-known ones are German Shepherds and Bloodhounds. In Britain, police dogs have a 13-week training course and many dogs fail. Not all dogs make good police dogs. They must be completely reliable and obedient. They are working dogs and they have a job to do.

Police dogs are trained to chase and hold people who are trying to get away from the police. Police dogs are not vicious animals. They are trained to hold on to people until their handler tells them to let go. Police dogs often go into dangerous places and they are given special vests to protect them from attacks with knives and guns.

Dogs are not only used to chase and catch criminals, but also used for following suspects or finding missing persons. This is because some dogs, such as Bloodhounds, have a very good sense of smell and can be trained to recognize certain types of smells. Some dogs are used to find survivors after earthquakes or explosions and some are specially trained to find dead bodies.

In many countries, dogs are used in airports to check luggage for drugs and bombs. Labradors, Spaniels and Beagles are used for this because they are friendly dogs and people are not afraid of them.

  • 25、“Made in China” is having its moment now and it’s a fashionable one.

The story of Chinese fashion began in 2011 when Feiyue and Huili, both Chinese sports shoe brands, suddenly got international attention. Their products were seen all over the world. Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning was at the New York Fashion Week in September, 2018. They showed their new designs—sweaters and jackets with Chinese characters.

Shaun Rein, managing director of China Market Research Group, said that the latest Chinese brands no longer catch customers’ eye by low price. He told CNN, “They are sure that they can go head to head with foreign brands.”

Maybe it is because China’s young people are now more confident about their own culture. They don’t show immediate interest in Western culture any more.

“Today’s young people in China are crazy about Chinese cultural elements(元素).” Jin Qu, the manager of a clothing shopping website, said at a cultural festival in 2018. “They like these elements printed on their clothes, even the brand picture of Laoganma in China, which was once seen as outside of fashion. But now young people take pride in these Chinese symbols.”

In fact, many stars in the West take an interest in Chinese cultural elements in fashion now. Rihanna, a US singer, for example, wore a Chinese red dress to the 2015 Met Gala in New York. The dress was designed and made by Chinese designer Guo Pei.

“We have to move from making to creating.” Chinese-American designer Aric Chen once told The New York Times. “We want to replace the words ‘Made in China’ with ‘Designed in China’.”

【3】What’s the meaning of the underlined word “replace”?

    A.放置

    B.代替

    C.翻译

    D.创作

【4】The passage above may be taken from a(n) __________.

    A.newspaper

    B.guidebook

    C.novel

【5】What can be the best title for the passage?

  • 26、   Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn’t with their memory. The problem is with how they study.

To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized(有条理的).When you put away a book-or memory-you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.

How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is height, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.

    1the writer’s opinion, students can’t remember words because ______.

    A.they have memory problems

    B.they’re too worried

    C.they don’t use a proper way

    D.they don’t like to study

2Which is TRUE about memory according to the passage?

    A.Short-term memory is seldom used.

B.What we see goes into long-term memory first.

C.We will forget a word soon if it goes into short-term memory.

D.We will never forget a word if it goes into long-term memory.

3The underlined part in Paragraph 2 means long-term memory ______.

A.keeps many books like a large library

    B.works like a well-organized library

    C.provides any book you want

    D.leaves memory anywhere

4Which is one example of ”thinking about the word in new ways” in Paragraph 3?

    A.Making sentences with the word.

    B.Listening to some familiar stories.

C.Talking with people that you know.

D.Drawing pictures of the word on paper.

5This passage mainly tells us about _____.

    A.language students’ problems in study

B.how to make the meaning of words stronger

    C.short-term and long-term memory

D.how to improve ways to remember words

  • 27、Do you know what you’d like to be when you grow up? It takes most people many years to find this out. For the young artist Alexandra Nechita, it never really seemed to be a question. From the day she began drawing at the age of two, she was an artist.

Alexandra Nechita was born in Romania in 1985 and moved to California when she was still a baby. As a little child, she loved colouring in her colouring books. Her parents hoped she could spend more time playing with other children, so they took away her colouring books. Alexandra began drawing her own pictures and colouring them in.

By the time Alexandra was seven years old, she had begun painting with oil paints. When Alexandra took a local art class, her teacher was amazed at the young artist’s unusual style of painting. Alexandra’s work was similar in some ways to the paintings by famous artists like Picasso. These artists did not use a realistic style of painting. They allowed their imaginations to play an important part in their work. The interesting thing was that little Alexandra had never seen the work of these artists. People called her “Little Picasso”. This was a great honour, but Alexandra’s style of painting was all her own.

Alexandra’s first public show was held at a Los Angeles public library when she was only eight years old. People were amazed at how young Alexandra was, but mostly they loved her imaginative artwork. It did not take long for Alexandra and her work to become famous. She appeared on television programs and in newspapers and magazines all over the world. The sale of a single piece can earn the young artist thousands of dollars. But that is not why Alexandra creates artwork. She just cannot imagine doing anything else that would bring her such joy and satisfaction.

Today, Alexandra is a full-time artist. She also works to help support the arts in schools. Alexandra is a strong believer in the power of art as a tool of communication and a bridge to building peace throughout the world.

    正确写A,错误写B。

【1】Alexandra’s paintings are especially realistic so she became very famous.

【2】Alexandra was called “Little Picasso” because she studied the artist’s artwork.

【3】Nothing but painting can make her happy and satisfied.

【4】Making lots of money is one of the reasons why Alexandra creates artwork.

【5】Alexandra’s first public show was held in Los Angeles at the age of 8.

I do feel angry that people are always telling me they have p4 on me because I don’t own one.

Being an outsider in this world of technology, I sometimes feel I’m the only one that notices the c5 in people when they get a smartphone. I’ve been to many birthday parties where everyone spends more time on their phone than talking to one another and I’ve seen my friends completely stuck in their online world. It makes me sad that so many people lose themselves in a world that doesn’t e6 and ignore the people around them.

I enjoy the freedom I get from not being available all day long and I feel able to spend most of my free time reading or doing s7 interesting. Maybe one day I will get a smartphone, but I am not going to be unhappy because I don’t own one. So trust me, when people say that it’s better to have a smartphone, they’re wrong!
