24、 Thomas Edison lit up the world with his invention of the electric light. Without him, the world might still be in the dark. However, the electric light was not his only invention. He also invented the motion picture camera and over1,200 other things. About every two weeks he created something new.
Thomas Edison was born in 1847. He attended school for only three months. His mother taught him at home, but Thomas was mostly self-educated. He started experimenting at a young age.
When he was 12 years old, he got his first job. He became a newsboy on train. He did experiments on the train in his spare time. Unluckily, his first work experience did not end well. They fired him when he accidentally set fire to the floor of the train. Then Edison worked for five years as a telegraph operator, but he continued to spend much of his time in experimenting his first patent(专利权) in 1868 for a vote recorder run by electricity.
Thomas Edison was totally deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other, but he thought of his deafness as a blessing in many ways. It kept conversations short, so that he could have more time for work. He always worked 16 out of every 24 hours. Sometimes his wife had to remind him to sleep and eat.

25、
One day I got in a taxi, and we left for the airport. We were driving in the right lane(车道) when, suddenly, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver stopped his car at once. The tire(轮胎) made a very loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just one inch from the back of the other car.
I was frightened. But then I couldn't believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head and started yelling at us. I couldn't believe it! But my taxi driver just smiled at the guy. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost sent us to hospital.”
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Rubbish Truck(垃圾车法则)”. He explained that many people are like rubbish trucks. They run around full of rubbish, full of anger and full of bad feelings. As their rubbish piles up, they look for a place to throw it away and sometimes they'll throw it at you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their rubbish and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.
Successful people never let rubbish trucks change their moods. Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so love those who love you and pray(祈祷) for those who don't.

A.Fight with people like rubbish trucks. B.Make friends with people like rubbish trucks.

26、Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)
A new research suggests that children who are brought up on healthy diets are more intelligent compared with those junk food eaters. It was found toddlers (蹒跚学步的孩子) who are fed a diet high in fats, sugars, and processed foods had lower IQs than those fed pasta, salads and fruit. The effect is so great that researchers from the University of Bristol said those children with a “healthier” diet may get an IQ improvement. Scientists stressed a good diet was vital in a child’s early life as the brain grows at its fastest rate during the first three years of life. This indicated head growth at this time is linked to intellectual ability and it is possible that good nutrition during this period may encourage the best brain growth.
Scientists followed the long-term health and happiness of around 14, 000 children born in 1991 and 1992 as part of the West Country’s Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Parents were quizzed about the types and frequency of the food and drink their children consumed when they were three, four, seven and eight and a half years old. Their answers were marked on a sliding scale (浮动计算表). Minus two is for the healthiest while ten is for the unhealthiest. IQ was measured by a test—the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (韦氏儿童智力量表) —of 4, 000 children when they were eight and a half years old. The results found after considering some other factors, a mainly processed food diet at the age of three was connected with a lower IQ at the age of eight and a half, but whether the diet was improved after that age would never influence the result. Every one point increase in dietary score was connected with a 1.67 fall in IQ.
