  • 25、(One day some police officer went to Henderson’s house to ask some questions.)

    ....

    ....

“Sit down,” Henderson said, sitting down in an armchair himself and looking at Logan. “What are you here for?”

“I understand you had a party last night,” said Logan a police officer.

“Yes,” said Henderson. “Oh! I hope the neighbors haven’t been complaining about the noise again.”

“Not that I know of.” said Logan.” “But a young girl, Fran, who came to the party hasn’t been home yet.”

“Fran...”said Henderson. “Yes, she was here. She left early, as I remember, at about one o’clock. I happened to notice what the time was when she came to say goodbye. But nobody else left until about four in the morning.

    Henderson looked quite relaxed.

“Did you know Clare?” asked Logan suddenly.

“Oh, God!” Henderson sat forward. “You don’t think ... the same thing has happened to Fran?”

“We’re keeping an open mind,” said Logan, watching him carefully, “but we’re giving it our full attention.”

“Well, yes. I can understand that.” replied Henderson, getting comfortable in the armchair again.

“So, ”repeated Logan, “ did you know Clare?”

“Well, sure. I knew who she was. But we never had anything to do with each other. ”said Henderson, giving Logan a big smile.

“Who else was at your party?” asked Logan.

“People from the university,” said Henderson. “Students, teachers.”

    “David?” asked Grant, Logan’s partner.

“Yes, David was here for a time.” Henderson smiled again. “But he’s really a party animal. He probably left early.”

“What do you mean, probably?” asked Grant. Henderson looked at Grant. Grant was sixty with thick black hair and a large moustache(胡子). His clothes, as always, looked rather old: blue jacket and grey trousers. He didn’t like much of a party animal either.

“Well, I don’t check when my guests arrive and leave,” said Henderson. “And some people just leave when they want to go home. They don’t come and say goodbye. Anyway, sometimes I can be difficult to find.”

  • 26、Math Holidays

    Mole Day

Mole Day is celebrated annually on Oct. 23 from 6:02 am to 6:02 pm. It celebrates Avogadro’s Number (approximately), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. The first Mole Day took place in 1991 and has been honored every year since. The concept of a celebratory day was created by Maurice Oehler, a retired high school chemistry teacher. It aims to develop interest in chemistry, encouraging schools around the globe to celebrate Mole Day with various activities related to chemistry.

    Fibonacci Day

Nov. 23 marks Fibonacci Day, a special day that celebrates tile man known as Leonardo Fibonacci who developed a mathematical concept called the Fibonacci Sequence, in which every number is the sum of the previous two numbers. So, for example, 11/23 marks the day because 1+1 equals 2, and then 1+2 equals 3 (the date being the 23rd). It may be somewhat difficult to grasp, but the concept is not entirely theoretical.

    Square Root Day

Square Root Day is a holiday that occurs when the month and day are square roots of the last two digits of the year: e.g. 2/2/2004 and 3/3/2009. The last Square Root Day was 4/4/2016 and the next one will be 5/5/2025. The holiday was created by a high school teacher Ron Gordon in Redwood City, California, who noticed that an upcoming date (9/9/1981) represented a square root.

    Pi Day

The granddaddy of mathematical and scientific holidays, however, falls every year on Mar. 14. The date, 3/14, represents the first three numerals in the calculation of pi; so the date is known annually as Pi Day. Pi Day was founded in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw working at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The event featured the eating of various pies, tossing pizza pie dough and parades and speeches.

【1】Which holiday is linked to Avogadro’s Number?

    A.Pi Day.

    B.Mole Day.

    C.Fibonacci Day.

    D.Square Root Day.

【2】Which of the following dates is a Square Root Day?

    A.Oct. 23, 2020.

    B.Sept. 9, 2021.

    C.Mar. 14, 2030.

    D.Jun 6, 2036.

【3】Who was the first man to celebrate Pi Day?

    A.Larry Shaw.

    B.Ron Gordon.

    C.Maurice Oehler.

    D.Leonardo Fibonacci.

Have you ever been to the Dead Sea, one of the most famous natural wonders in the world? Have you ever considered why it is called Dead Sea? Does it hold life? Can people swim there? With all these questions in your mind, let’s know something about it!

The Dead Sea is actually a lake in the Middle East. At four hundred meters below sea level, it’s the lowest point on Earth. It lies between the borders of Jordan, Israel, and the West Bank. It’s about 80 kilometers long, 11 kilometers wide at its widest point, and 377 meters deep at its deepest. The lake is surrounded by hot, dry desert on all sides.

Since it’s in a hot desert, water evaporates (蒸发) faster than the lake is refilled. And the area is lower than all the land around, the water can never flow back out, it can only evaporate. And that’s what happens-water continually evaporates. In fact, so much water is evaporating from the Dead Sea, it often looks like there’s a cloud of fog hanging over the lake. Anyway, as the water evaporates, it leaves behind the salt and minerals (矿物质). The water in the Dead Sea is almost six times saltier than ocean water!

Because the Dead Sea is so salty, almost nothing can live there, except for bacteria and one type of algae. Any fish or freshwater animal that gets washed into the lake dies almost immediately. And the shores are covered in thick salt crystals (结晶), so animals can’t even live near the lake either. That’s why it’s called Dead Sea.

Since it’s so salty, why do people go there to cover themselves from head to toe with its mud? Actually, those minerals are supposed to be really good for your skin. No wonder lots of spas and health resorts have been built in the area. Though the water in the Dead Sea is so salty, it is totally safe for people. You can even go swimming there if you want, although it’s pretty hard to swim because all that salt makes it much easier to float! It’s really unbelievable.

Want to know more about it? Just explore it yourself!

【1】Why does the writer use four questions in the beginning?

A.To interest readers in natural wonders.

B.To lead into the topic of the Dead Sea.

C.To introduce the popularity of the Dead Sea.

D.To express worries about freshwater animals.

【2】What can you learn about the Dead Sea from the passage?

    A.It’s near the Middle East.

    B.It’s far from the desert.

    C.It’s 80 kilometers wide.

D.It’s the lowest point on land.

【3】What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?

A.How the Dead Sea is formed.

B.How the Dead Sea gets so salty.

C.Why fish can’t live in the Dead Sea.

D.Why the Dead Sea is like a cloud of fog.

【4】What’s the structure of the passage?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.
